Michael Paddington at the Beach, Illustrated by R.W. Awlley. PICTURE BOOK. Harper, 2008. $17.99. Content G.

Paddington Bear goes to the beach, but is quickly accompanied by seagulls. Each page brings a new seagull all the way up to ten seagulls. This is a great book for a Paddington fan, but also for little ones learning to count to ten. The seagulls think they have outsmarted Paddington by taking his bread, but what they don’t know is he always keeps a marmalade sandwich under his hat.

I really wish I could do a 3.5 on this one. This is not nearly as cute as some of the other Paddington Bear picture books - it is not the normal Paddington, or Paddington in the Garden or Paddington and the Busy B Carnival. It IS however a fun counting book for children who enjoy Paddington Bear. My son who really enjoys Paddington Bear stories enjoyed counting the seagulls and listening to the stories and points to the numbers in the front cover every time we read it. So it's a fun counting sto ...more

Fans of picture books and Paddington alike will relish his latest adventure at the beach. The counting aspect of the book is subdued, as the title does not clue the reader in, nor do the illustrations include images of numbers, as counting books often do, but readers can easily count the birds on each page, and this reviewer appreciated the subtlety. Alley’s sweet, colored pencil and watercolor illustrations feature large images with soft, curving lines that result in pleasing scenes and cuddly- ...more

Paddington has come to the beach to build a sandcastle and swim in the ocean. As part of his plans for the day he has also brought along a special treat, a bun. However when the seagulls realize that Paddington has a delicious bun they start to spread the news and soon Paddington has a following interested in only one thing. Will they succeed or can he enjoy his special treat in peace?

I liked it. But something felt missing because I didn't love it in the way I love the other Paddington books, both the original stories and some of the other picture books. Perhaps there was too much focus on counting the seagulls and less focus on Paddington and his charms.

The Paddington books are a great series. I like how this book slightly encourages counting (seagull #1, etc.), and has a funny ending. The illustrations help make this a good book, too!

Recommends it for: parents reading with their children
Classic Paddington Bear illustrations and a (sort-of) fun day at the beach. Poor Paddington is plagued by a bevy of seagulls (10 to be precise) during his trip to the seaside. He has a lot of problems, but with typical Paddington aplomb, he manages to see the bright side.

3.75 Stars This is a simple cute counting book of Paddington on the beach and his run ins with 10 seagulls. Love the pictures, the counting is good! Fun one!

A good introduction to Paddington bear. Sneaky seagulls watch to see what Paddington is doing at the beach. You can count the seagulls together. Good for a beach, bird, bear, or summer storytime.

I'm normally ok with Paddington, but this one is terrible. None if this could actually happen.
