I must have read this book before, but for the life of me I can't remember it. It's set in the time of Charles II of England, and has a very long subtitle. Otherwise, it seems a fairly realistic view of Restoration England, then Bermuda (w/a sidelong glimpse of the Sargasso Sea), then Colonial Maryland.

Andre Norton's third book (after THE PRINCE COMMANDS and RALESTONE LUCK -- she would go on to write or co-write over 100 more) is what we would call today "Historical Fiction." Although her first two books were enjoyable, Norton's writing is much more solid here than in the previous two books. She's clearly done her research, too. Her protagonist, Joanna, must overcome multiple obstacles to rescue her brother, who has been sold into slavery to Pre-Revolutionary War America. Norton describes both ...more
