I'd never heard of this Verne before I saw it for free on Kindle. I figured I'd give it a try since I generally enjoy Verne. It turns out this is somewhat a farce on the Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson-type survival stories. Verne even mentions both of those titles and talks about how certain events just don't quite follow the pattern survival stories are supposed to follow.

Here's the setting used: Godfrey Morgan is a young man who is engaged to be married but who itches to go explore

I found this book hilarious, but that might be because of how much of Jules Verne I have read. The book riffs off of Robinson Crusoe, both celebrating and poking fun of both that classic work of literature and Verne's own novels. (Also, I never quite made it through the unabridged version of Robinson Crusoe, so that may have contributed to my pleasure.)

Basically, the heir to a great fortune would rather take a trip around the world than settle down, so his uncle has him shipwrecked on an island

The second entry in the North American Jules Verne Society’s (NAJVS) Palik Series features a story that would be reworked into one of Jules Verne’s most famous novels Mysterious Island. This volume features an outstanding piece by series editor Brian Taves on Verne’s “Robinsonades.” For those that don’t know, a Robinsonade is a story of survival, using on a desert island in the spirit of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and Johann Wyss’s The Swiss Family Robinson. The late Sidney Kravitz provided ...more

One day I had the choice for a free book in a library and I chose this one since Jules Verne is a well-known author and I never read any of his book, I wanted to try it.
It was a little hard at first to get into this book and I was not really interested until they started the trip. After the trip, it was a little bit more interesting but still hard to read on. While I was reading this book, I thought that some part sounded unrealistic but after all, at the time the book was written they were not

"Shipwrecked Family" is in the tradition of Robinson Crusoe and the Swiss Family Robinson. It's also the prototype for Verne's classic Mysterious Island. A wonderful essay comes with the book that not only outlines the author's fascination with "Robinsonades" but also addresses how the plot of this particular tale was later reworked into the exploits of the immortal Captain Nemo.

Verne is often wrongly assumed to be a writer of nothing but fiction aimed at the younger market. In this case, that's

The resolution of this plot was quite comical. William Kolderup purchases Spencer Island from the United States Government at an auction. His nephew, Godfrey Morgan, decides he wishes to explore the world before marrying his uncle's ward, Phina, which upsets all of his uncle's plans. This is how it looks - young man: restless, uncle: unhappy with restless young man. Kolderup charts and plans all of Godfrey's adventures and Godfrey winds up getting shipwrecked on a desert island with his ...more

I liked this Jules Verne book, even though it was quite predictable. I have read Mysterious Island before, and I noticed some of the same literary techniques and plot dilemmas in Godfrey Morgan. I felt like I was reading a simpler, less mature version of Mysterious Island -- although, I have since learned that Godfrey Morgan was actually written 8 years after Mysterious Island.

Character development was OK, but many of the story-line was a little hard to believe (like lightning hitting exactly th

Another Jules Verne I had never read before, and a slight one. Something of a spoof of castaway novels, Godfrey and his dancing instructor get stranded on an island off the beaten track. Mystery piles on mystery - it starts reading like an episode of "Lost" at points! - though everything is satisfactorily explained by the end of the story (unlike "Lost"!). Not a major work, but amusing.

This book is a rehash of "The Mysterious Island". Oddly, even though it was written almost ten years after "The Mysterious Island", it is not as good. If you are interested in books about surviving on a desert island, read this one first, then Mysterious Island, or just skip this one and go directly to Mysterious Island.

Found this book at Powell's in Portland, what a wonderful store. Powell's had reprinted an 1884 version of this book. Basically this was Verne's Robinson Crusoe story and was entertaining with a few twists and turns but predictable. A nice quick read but no Mysterious Island.

A very fun mystery. If you like Crusoe type stories, you will like this one. I really liked the main character, of course, he comes across quite well. The companion he starts out with is a surprise as well. It was better than the mysterious Island. More believable.

Jules Gabriel Verne was a French author who pioneered the genre of science-fiction. He is best known for his novels Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873).

Verne wrote about space, air, and underwater travel before navigable aircraft and practical submarines were invented, and before any means of spa

— Isola in vendita! Isola in vendita!
