I'm not entirely sure why I finished this book except possibly for sheer, morbid curiosity. Chase Calder is an awful, arrogant, bully of a man. The book starts when he is 22 and she is 15, so their first encounter is statutory rape and I'm afraid I can't just mean that in a legal sense. She was immature (all the more so for not recognize how immature she was) and he seduces her, knowing better. In high school I read most of the books in the "Calder" series. I got sucked into the family saga. Don't know how quality it is, but it certainly peaked my interest enough at the time to make we want to read the others (and quite frankly, I was not a voracious reader, so it was impressive to get me to read anything at all). I have a feeling if you like Danielle Steele then you would like this series. Fortunately, as I aged my tastes evolved.
This book is #3 in the Calder series. Chase Calder is the latest in the dynasty of Calders. He has grown up knowing he will inherit the ranch and the acres and acres of land. Maggie O'Rourke is a neighbour. She lives on a small ranch and her father and brother are extremely envious of the Calders. Chase takes Maggie's virginity and innocence. Started reading this series in the 80's. I think the last one was published just a couple of years ago. I've enjoyed them all, especially the early ones set in the old west. The newer one's are contemporary. It follows a large ranch owning family through the generations.
I read this years ago and fell in love with Janet's characters - the strong yet vulnerable men and the women they loved. Great romance without being too girly or sappy. Loved it so much I named one of my son's Chase after one of her characters. Loved this series!

I read the calder series in my youth and then again later loved them then love them now!!
Chase and Maggie's story is the absolute best of the Calder series.

I loved this series!
I loved all of Janet Dailey's Calder series and wish they would have made a movie about the Calder Family. It was entertaining. Love, hate, mystery, good overcomes bad.
Just reread this after many years...God JD was such a good writer back in the day...her newer stuff is sooooo bad! Chase and Maggie are one of my Calder couples!

The Calder series is great. Read them in order for the maximum impact.
