If you ever wondered how twisted a book can get, then look no further.
This book is a psychological thriller in every sense of the word and if you include pedophiles it makes the story even more interesting.
The main character DI Brooke is quite fascinating. He the type of character a reader would struggle to understand and each will end up having a different opinion of him.
Same go for the other character, Victor Sorenson.
The novels basically deals with the twisted relationships some father's have...more

But one winter's night, Brook is confronted by a serial killer he hunted many years before, The Reaper, a man who slaughters families in their homes then disapp...more

The blurb: “Things can’t go on the way they are. On every estate, law-abiding residents are thinking it. In every school, teachers are thinking it. On every street corner, policemen are thinking it. If we could just remove this family, this pupil, this yob from the face of the earth, the world would truly be a better place. Nobody would miss them. Nobody would mourn for them. If they could just cease to exist and the misery they cause die with them. No fuss, no mess. What a thing.”

Feels very much like a journeyman novel rather than the work of a master. The prose is competent but there are none of those moments you get in, for example, an Ian Rankin novel where you have to pause for a second to admire the sheer artistry of the construction.

The promise of the initial chapters gives way to a rather pedestrian procedural that continues for almost 200 pages before things pick up again. The renewed pace isn't sustained, however, and it seems to tail off towards the end when it...more

I have recently been let down immensely by the books I have read, i.e. The Hypnotist, which was utterly dreadful, so I was drawn into this one from the first page. Up to half way through I couldn't put it down but it then became a little tedious for me. Also when Brook was talking to someone often the reply of the other person was in italics-why?:I couldn't get my head around that one. I do agree with another reviewer that this would have benefited greatly from editing and proof reading. Apart fr...more

A clunky thriller, originally self-published I believe which I admire. Good plot but the whole time I was reading I just kept thinking that I'd read it before and with more style. There is a sequel coming called The Disciple sometime this year and I enjoyed The Reaper enough to get this at some point, one to get from the library rather than buy though.

This book had me captivated from the beginning. Police man gets caught up in a cat and mouse game with a serial killer who believes he is riding the world of it's evil. They begin an unhealthy relationship that pushes the main character to the edge. Brilliant book, well worth reading,

The first in a series and what an excellent novel this is. Unfortunately I read the third one first but it didn't spoil this one as this filled in all the gaps. So good I have to go on and read the sequel, The Disciple, next.Steven Dunne has produced wonderful likeable characters that make you want to find out more, Excellent read and highly recommended.

I was a third of the way through this book and I thought why am I bothering. I really couldn't care about the story, the characters - seen/read it all before by superior authors. It was .... boring. So its gone back to the library unfinished.

Wasn't quite sure about this at the beginning the style seemed a little self-conscious in places. As it got going though it seemed to flow better and the plot was great the twist in the tale was a new one for me.

Very strange book, but I enjoyed it. Will be happy to give #2 in the series a go.

Back to basics crime with this book with great character depictions and intense plotting throughout. I enjoyed the journey and will be interested to see how Steven Dunne follows up this debut!

I knew there was a reason that this book was unfinished, it's not that it was a bad book it was just blah. I didn't care about the victims and I wasn't fussed if the police caught the killer or not. As for the lead detective, he was just like every other fictional detective - messed up personal life and no people skills.
Sheridan
Lots of interesting twists and turns. Finished with me not even knowing "who done it"!
Claire
I really enjoyed this book. I read a lot of thriller/detective type stories and I like they way this one is slightly different. It has a definite twist in the way you look at the "hero".
Excellent

A well crafted serial killer story. Are all victims of crime undeserving? This question is faced by DI Damen Brooks whose dedication to the job has affected him.
