Documentary film can encompass anything from Robert Flaherty's pioneering ethnography Nanook of the North to Michael Moore's anti-Iraq War polemic Fahrenheit 9/11, from Dziga Vertov's artful Soviet propaganda piece Man with a Movie Camera to Luc Jacquet's heart-tugging wildlife epic March of the Penguins. In this concise, crisply written guide, Patricia Aufderheide takes r ...more

The first part of this book is a fascinating glimpse into the various, contradictory philosophies adopted by different documentarians and the evolution of the social context in which they are used. Splendid! However, the second half of the book is a rather muddled run-down of a hundred or so documentaries both famous and obscure which tries to categorize them into the slots presented in the first half, which is both a fruitless exercise and at the expense of an actual discussion of each document ...more

while about to start writing a master thesis on documentary, I found this small pocket book on the library shelf. It was the perfect choice to start with, very easy and fast to read, gives the best introduction, definition, criticism, genres, subgenres, what is missing in the academic research and of course what to read next that is worth it...

From overwhelmed with chaos of ideas and many books to read, this book put me right on track and made planning easy..

I wish to see a second edition that i

The book I read to research this post was Documentary Film A Very Short Introduction by Patricia aufderheide which is an excellent book which I bought from kindle. Documentary film can probably be traced back to the 1922 film Robert Flaherty's Nanook Of The North which wasn't a documentary in the strictest sense because Eskimos who were quite up to date and one of them even fixed the movie camera had to hunt walrus with a spear like in the olden days for the purposes of the film. He also made a ...more

Just as the title of the book claims - this is a very short introduction. It's also quite a good broad introduction, with many details about the originators of documentary film and early works. It's a great place to look for names of must-see early documentaries as well.

However, even after explaining how early documentarians basically faked some parts, and how the Nazi's used propaganda-documentary entirely to their advantage, the author singles out one film - Loose Change - to dismiss. Simply p

For a book that claims to be a VERY short introduction to. This book packs a lot in.

There are passages talking about specific documentary filmmakers and areas that talk about thoughts on documentary filmmaking, as well as different ways of going about documentary filmmaking and different subject matters. So there is a wide variety of things to start you on your path to researching more. This is my first official Documentary based film book that I have read and I have found myself already being

I bought this book as someone who's interested in documentary films. It wasn't a bad choice from this perspective. Indeed, it's a book for beginners who seek preliminary knowledge about documentary film evolution. The book, unexpectedly, turns out to speak about the cultural impact of documentary film. I recommend it to students of media studies and cultural studies. For people who are interested in the technical, lucklessly I'm one, the book has nothing of that sort. Patricia, as I have seen thr ...more

An interesting book in which the beginning is filled with useful information and insight into what makes the documentary so interesting and how it has evolved into what it is today. It also demonstrates the clash of different ideas and theories of different filmmakers and why each one is justified and carried out. It's interesting to be able to understand what it is that goes behind the mind of a documentary filmmaker and why this type of film is so popular today.

My main gripe with this book how

An ideal VSI which provides substantive information about a topic while opening up avenues for the curious reader to learn more. I read this book when I was heavily into watching documentary films a couple of years ago. (It's still one of my favorite film genres.)

Still at the first chapter ! it seems like a good choice for people seeking preliminary knowledge about this topic !
