A CRITIQUE OF “BUDDHA'S WIFE BY GABRIEL CONSTANS

The dedication says:
“In honor of Yasodhara............. and all women throughout history who have been minimized, ignored or solely remembered as an appendage to their family or spouse …......”
Has Gabriel Constans by writing this book “Buddha's Wife” actually honored the women that he mentions here or have they been reduced , transformed to a state of “reductio ad absurdum”?
It was the title “Buddha's Wife” that made me notice this book when I pi

Some reviewers have found fault with the fictional nature of this story, going so far as to question why the book doesn't give warning of such fact. I would remind them to peruse the very front cover, wherein the words "a novel" are inscribed, and the back cover, where the word "fiction" is duly noted. We all wonder, we imagine, we all wish, at times, that we might be able to fill in the gaps. The point of this book is to do that, while weaving in colorful strands of Buddhist teachings, along th ...more

Buddha’s Wife is a historical novel about compassion, inspiration and forgiveness. Thousands of books, texts and stories have followed Siddhartha’s teachings and his path to becoming The Buddha, but little has been written in English about his wife Yasodhara, their child Rahula or their relatives, until now.

Why did he call his son “a hindrance” and believe women were a trap of desire and attachment “not fit to follow or understand my teachings”? How did Yasodhara and the nuns fight for equal tre

"Buddha's Wife" is a brilliant example of taking the "what ifs" of story telling and combining lingering myths of heroes of the past in an effort to draw attention and injustice from the past which remains unresolved in the present. Gabriel Constans dedicates his novel about Yasodhara to `all women throughout history who have been minimized, ignored or solely remembered as an appendage to their family or spouse.' He aims to redress this by imagining how Yasodhara, in the days before her death, w ...more

Although, as others have noted, this is a work of fiction, it center on historical characters. This raises questions which most writers of historical fiction seek to answer for their readers. What sources did the author consult to authenticate his story? Where has he quoted from other sources, where is his story original? Beyond these issues, I must note the strange insertion of colloquialisms which confuse the time frame of the story. The story ranges between third person and first person which ...more
