Dispossessed of her vast property on the island of Rab by the Communist authorities of Yugoslavia, 100-year-old Madonna lies on her death bed—finicky, frail, and foul-smelling. Her nurse, Mali, thinks it a miracle that she lives at all. Although their relationship is never made exactly clear, Mali performs his duties with patience and care, as he reflects on their lives, t

Difficult, but worth it.

Slobodan Novak is one of twentieth-century Europe's most renowned authors of prose works. His 1968 novel Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh has received every honor available in its homeland, subsequently going through nine Croatian editions and appearing in seven languages. Its premise is very basic: it is nearing Christmas, and a middle-aged man sits in an ancient, closed-off mansion on Rab, reluctantly caring for its owner, a centenarian named Madonna, formerly a great patrician whose vast holdings ...more

I assume this is the original of the English translation, "Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh" (Autumn Hill Books, 2007). I am puzzled that I couldn't find the English title neither on Amazon nor on Goodreads. The novel is difficult to read, but powerful. A major East-European writer. I don't understand why the publisher hasn't done anything to make it visible.
