Hoem's novelized biography of his parents takes place in a world of yesterday that seems utterly foreign to a modern reader, despite the fact they grew up and lived at the same time as my own parents. It is a story of finding one's own way in life, but also of submission to religious and parental authority. The story is engagingly and respectfully told by a son who chose a very different course. (I read the Norwegian editon).

Nydelig erindringshistorie.

Important reminder of how fortunate we are to be able to educate ourselves and choose what life to lead. The book also reminds us, perhaps, of having prospered too much.

Nice family story. Read the german version. Simple vocabulary. An dignified and iteresting homage to one´s own parents.
