I was looking for another Devil Wears Prada or Bergdorf Blondes, just some easy "chick lit". I am surprised I even finished this book, but it took me a good 3 weeks, and I guess nothing better came a long. I am surprised that Candace Bushnell is a best selling author based on this writing. The ending was the VERY most cliche ending I have ever read - this wouldn't pass a highschool writing assignment with a last page like this. I don't think there was even one line that was funny, ...more

Let me begin by saying I love love LOVE Sex and the City and read the novel long before I watched the series. I was intrigued to find out what Candace Bushnell could do with fiction...
I've read some pretty unflattering comments about this book on GoodReads but I have to say that I enjoyed it. It had balls most of the way through although the ending was soppy and pretty much what I was expecting.
It was very much in the Jackie Collins bracket. I hadn't read anything of that ilk in years so...more

So, at first I was going to write this whole review about the book and why I SHOULDN'T have liked it. But the truth of the matter is that it was entertaining enough and it's okay for a book to be just that. I'm allowing myself to find the good in things for what they are. And sometimes you want a fluffy, no brainer. It's called ENTERTAINMENT. Something I normally make myself feel guilty over enjoying.

As a "Sex and the City" viewer, I thought I was going to enjoy this book; however, that was not the case. I think that the book could have been much better and that a few times hit on deeper thoughts that should have been further developed- but instead were just dropped... leaving the story somewhat superficial. Now you might think- "Sex and the City" (SATC) isn't exactly deep so what did I expect? I suppose that after watching SATC for several years- you naturally develop...more

I enjoyed reading this book. I felt that it was not the most amazing book to read, though. I liked Bet Me much better than this book. Still, I learned about life in this book. Although it may seem like just another chick book, it really isn't. It touches on issues that people face throughout life. It talks about whether one should settle for one thing just because it is the safe route or take the road less traveled. It is about taking chances in relationships and opening one's eyes to new experi...more

This is my first review and not a very auspicious one, but it's what I just finished reading. I don't think this qualifies even as good trashy fun; it's poorly written and edited (in one scene, someone faces an intractable decision about what to do about her failing marriage...in the next scene, the whole thing has already been wrapped with words to the effect of "She was amazed at how well that turned out after all.") I was also very surprised to find it was written post year 2000. It...more

Typical Candace Bushnell book which means I loved it. I like to read her books on airplanes and while traveling as they are absorbing but don't take a lot of brain energy. She's great at describing her characters and sucking you into their worlds. By the end I feel pretty invested in how their lives turn out.
In Lipstick Jungle, I liked the diversity of the characters and how their lives were all so different but intersected enough to show me the ties. I didn't relate to any of them as the...more

I read this book to know the characters first, before watching the new television show. It's a classic Candace Bushnell, I-am-woman-hear-me-roar. And while I can appreciate a little bit of feminisim, this is a little over the top for me. I did learn a couple interesting things along the way though, and that was when you let someone pay for you at dinner, you automatically gain a "position of power" over the person you're paying for. Interesting, when you think about back when you w...more

I really didn’t care for this book. There are three main reasons why:
1. Husbands were seen as an accessory, and cheating on them wasn’t a big deal. (If you know me I’m sure you know how much that pissed me off. And considering how it was first mentioned on page 11…)
2. Apparently the only way for a woman to be happy (and successful) is be make a lot of money and have a big fancy career. I lost count how many times someone said something negative about women who stay at home and let ...more

I love "Sex and the City" (the TV series). I love the light, smart writing, the great characters (with whom I have nothing in common except a second X chromosome, but I love them anyway). And since they sprang from the mind of Candace Bushnell, I expected more of the same.
Not quite. Understand, I didn't watch the miniseries that aired recently (not a Brook (eh) Shields fan).

I loved watching the Sex in the City on TBS...and this was by the author. I enjoyed it. There I admitted it. It's fun reading about powerful women in gorgeous attire. Plus... I enjoy my bit of titillating writing between more substantive reads. It's my frivolous fling.
ps. The book... WAY better than the show on NBC. I actually prefer Cashmere Mafia to Lipstick Jungle on TV. I think why they aren't getting it right...like Sex in the City... is that the women are too mired in feeling bad/guilty ...more

I picked up this book because the television show got canceled and I wanted to know what happened to the characters since the show did not finish. Luckily, the book isn't really like the television show. It is better. I liked this book a lot. It's light and fluffy. It has a strong commentary on powerful women. It appeased my angst about women being unable to have it all. According to this book, crappy things still happen to women in power... yet in the end, they really DO have it all and ...more

A tremendously bad book. Seriously, it's not even good "chick lit." The characters are so flat, that I couldn't even keep the three main ones straight. I kept getting confused as to who was who and what they did. Terrible writing.
A note..I decided to read this prior to the TV series starting. I loved the TV version of "Sex and the City", but hated the book. I don't think that "Lipstick Jungle" is going to make for a really good TV series, but I was kind of curio...more

This book was not bad, but it wasn't good either. It was juicy and fluffy. But I found it hard to identify with any of the characters. I should have been able to identify with Wendy, but I just didn't respect her. I'm a working mom, but my family comes first. That doesn't make one way right or wrong. What surprised me was how much I like Victory. She really wanted to succeed on her own terms, without losing her identity, or her brand.
I just wish this book hadn't been so long. I think...more

I picked this up in an airport bookstore last week as I was looking for something "light" for my plane ride and I knew the TV version was debuting this week. It was an "eh" read - parts of it read quickly with some interesting plot lines - but overall I ended up not liking most of the characters - I might have even not read to the end if I wasn't a captive audience (ie being on a plane). Honestly reading this makes me less interested in watching the first episode of the TV sh...more

This was our book for Chick Lit Book Club (a separate group) this past month. Brain candy, for me. I'm not sure how true the characters are, but CB had something to say about successful women vs. successful men, and she got her message through.
Some readers had a hard time getting into this book (I didn't, I had trouble in the middle for some reason!), some absolutely HATED the characters and had no sympathy for them, me, I just enjoyed reading about women in NYC in lives I don't lead.

I was able to read this book during my mini-vacation. I thought it was a good book to read. It was from the same author that wrote Sex in the City (Which I have never seen), but I think this was on the same lines. It was about three women in their 40s that were best friends and lead different kind of lives. I noticed a lot of myself in each of the three women and learned some of the good and not so good characteristics about the three types of personalities. "It's a lipstick jungle out...more

I read this after being addicted to the tv show Sex and the City. It was an ok read - nothing special. There were some slow, boring parts and there were some laugh out loud parts. The characters lacked depth, and were not particularly likeable - making it hard to connect with them. The writing is poor in places, with gaping plot holes. It also seems to have the opinion that if women are not rich with high powered jobs then they are worth nothin. Crap. A holiday read at most.
