New Orleans can be a dangerous place. Especially for a prosecutor. Ryan Murphy is an assistant district attorney who likes her Tequila cold and her cops hot. With a mouth that doesn't know quite when to stop, her attitude plays well in front of a jury, but has a tendency to tick off judges, defendants, and other attorneys alike. Battling demons from her past and checking h ...more

Gumbo Justice - Holli Castillo, Author - Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat

'Ryan couldn't keep her thoughts from drifting back to the homicides on the short drive home. L'Roid Smith had been killed in a way common among gangs members - beaten, shot in the head execution style and left naked. It was the ultimate humiliation, and the same way he had committed his own gang murders, including the one Ryan had tried to prosecute. And Jeremiah had been beaten, the same way he ha

Does it hurt yet?

Those are the opening words to GUMBO JUSTICE and they haunt the main character, Ryan Murphy, for reasons made clear much later in the story.

When we meet Ryan, she's being roused in the dead of night after drinking way too much tequila and falling off her bar stool into what she sincerely hopes is beer. The phone rings and Ryan is summoned to a crime scene. So she's a cop? No! She's a New Orleans assistant district attorney with a boss who's a bit overeager to impress voters duri

I normally read rather cozy murder mysteries. Well, this is a hard-boiled mystery that is going to give the current leaders in this genre a fight for the top 5! The setting is Pre-Katrina New Orleans and involves so many areas of crime/and laws that I won't even try to explain. The very last page held a surprising twist and makes me eager to follow this author to her next book!

No better setting than NOLA! Love that it's about an ADA not a Private Investigator! It's fun, suspensful, surprises -all the good stuff!
Im definitely looking forward to reading #2 Jambalaya Justice -I do hate how hard these books are to find, would love Ms. Castillo to keep up with the series now that Skip Langdon/Julie Smith's NOLA Detective seems to be all done (& Talba Wallis isn't filling the void)!
*Soon Grafton's Milhonne (sp?) will be over too so would love to see more of Castillo's

So, I Read This Book Today
I very much wanted to be blown away by this book. A female lead as Assistant District Attorney, set in my very favorite part of the world. The potential was definitely there. A woman from a third generation police family who becomes an ADA, fighting crime in her own way? Cool, right? Uh, not so much.

The lead, Ryan, is more of a cliche than anything else. A falling-down alcoholic, she places herself in situations ripe to get herself carried home and raped more than once, though she is 'rescued' e

I almost always do my pleasure reading at night before I go to sleep. "Gumbo Justice" by Holli Castillo was one of those novels that made me wish I could stay up all night and keep turning the pages. Her main character, Ryan, is a headstrong, driven woman who is determined to figure out who is killing the people involved in the cases she has prosecuted. Someone is trying to ruin her career and is threatening her life. Ryan's past has literally come back to haunt her. I highly recommend "Gumbo Ju ...more

Just finished this one, another good New Orleans book, great mystery with twists and turns and a surprise ending I didn't see coming. Couldn't put it down until I found out whodunit.
