I have been saving this series for a long, long time, not because I thought it would be amazing and I wanted to save it for later but because it was the last series I had yet to read from this outstanding author. I knew I wouldn't be as attached to it as her LOTU series but I still knew I would like it big time because I adore how she writes. Awaken me Darkly begins the Alien Huntress series with Alien Investigation and Removal agent, Mia Snow. She is an expert when dealing with "other-worlders", and as a series of killings unfold in Chicago, Mia and her team must track the killer before it is too late. But as they begin their trail in finding a suspect, Mia's partner Dallas gets injured, and now fights for his life. When Dalla's cure comes in the form of a tall, erotic stranger, Mia faces a difficult decision, surrender to this Arcadian male, Kyrin en Arr, or watch as her partner slowly dies. All the while, trying to find a killer in their midst.

Where to begin? ..I thought I'd like this book, I love Gena's LOTU series; and though I came upon this series with an open mind and with the plan not to compare it to the Lords of the Underworld, I suppose my subconscious just couldn't help it. It is nothing like LOTU. And I can tell, after reading this book, that as a writer, Gena Showalter has definitely improved. The writing style is different and her characters are much more defined.

I like the idea of a kick ass heroine among men fighting for what she believes is right. But Mia Snow grated my nerves every step of the book.. every page. She was cocky, arrogantly so. And, though she'd lost her brothers, not once did I feel her pain, nor did I sympathize with her in any way. There was no depth to her persona, beside her troubled past, there really was nothing to Mia that I could grasp and like about. She challenged everyone, and like cowards everyone conceded to her every whim, including her boss. How's that so? She acted like she was in charge, all the freaking time. And like scolded puppies with their tails between their legs they proceeded to do as they were told. Even the "all powerful" aliens! Smh..

Then there was the romance, or better yet, the lack there of. From the moment she sees Kyrin en Arr, Mia feels a strong pull towards the man, but every step of the way she fights her desire. She refuses to admit she could ever possibly want an alien, and a dangerous one at that. The romance was not only lacking, but the end result, (view spoiler), wasn't very convincing. They hardly spent time with, or knew anything about each other for either of them to come forth and admit they had any feelings other than lust. There was no build up of romance, nothing to justify such desires.

The story itself was agonizingly slow, and consisted of nothing more than(view spoiler). There was hardly any action, and with that, very few confrontations. I don't remember anything about the sub characters and their relationship with the protagonist. None of the characters were memorable is what I'm coming at, and that's just sad.

It was a slow build, and certainly not a story I'd reread. If you like slower paced books about Cops and PNR investigations, this book is definitely for you. As for me, I'm doubtful about continuing the series.(less)

This was a fast paced , kick butt book. I was a little nervous since I am not a huge fan of alien books. But I love Gena Showalter and so I figured I would give it a chance. I am glad I did. I look forward to the next book and hope that some of the other characters will be in it. Kinda fond of some of them. Want more Dallas and Jaxon.

I am still not sure what genre to stick this book in. The romance was light. There was only one sexual encounter between Mia & Kyrin. The sex that was there was definitely hot! I liked the story. There was plenty of action and fighting. I wish there had been some sort of closure with Dare; perhaps we will see some more of him in later books. Mia Snow è una ragazza forte e determinata, che non guarda in faccia a nessuno pur di raggiungere il proprio obiettivo. So, in order to acknowledge my quirk for chronology I decided to start the whole Alien Huntress series from the start, since I had the first two books anyways and even though that I am supposed to review all the top new titles, I will be indulging myself in everything that can make you go squee, especially if the reader is new on the scene. Before "Savor me Slowly" Gena Showlater didn't ring a bell at all.

Before "Savor me Slowly" Gena Showlater didn't ring a bell at all.

Mia Snow is a special agent in the New Chicago Police Department, working in the A.I.R unit (Alien Investigation and Removal). The setting is in the near enough future to have your typical American mentality and yet far enough to see that water has been excluded from showring and that cars don't need steering and that aliens of all kinds have nestled on Earth, but without all the hysteria about it. Given the new circumstances justice, legal justace had to adapt and AIR is what the humans came up with. But enough with the pre-word, let's move on to the plot.

While investigating a new strand of serial murders Mia Snow stumbles into big trouble as what seems like an usual psycho alien on the loose, turns out to be a large scale illegal operation that has a lot more to do with Mia than she actually realizes. In the mix we throw a sexy alien, who is a primal murder suspect, Kyrin en Arr, to whom Mia is very sexually drawn; a hidden scheme; mystical abilities that manifest themselves and leave Mia asking questions. When Dallas, her partner and the only man, who can stand her, lies down with a lethal wound that has him dying slowly, Mia is forced to work with Kyrin behind the back of her boss in order to help Dallas and hep clear Kyrin's name, although she doesn't believe him.

In order to avoid spoilers I will not mention the ending, but be sure that Mia confronts a part of her past, which she hadn't known, but she could have gone without. When it all comes down to her, can she handle the strain and could she remain herself with what she knows? Quite the tease, aren't I? In order to find out, you would have to go read the book and that is what I urge you to do.

I have to admit that being a starter novel, this book definitely had to set the stage, so it wasn't was interested as I had anticipated after reading "Savor Me Slowly". The plot is at first glance not that special, since we have a female cop getting herself into trouble, which the TV is full of. However it's the amazing skill of Gena Showalter to strap a well known plot on the surgery table and give it a new look. What starts simple enough spins out of control like a mutating puzzle with every block sealing Mia's choice to act any other way than she did. Of course we have Mia of course, who I think is tough without being haughty or overestimatuing herself like some heroines in the same genre are. Thus we believe her. When she tells she can make someone's life a living hell we don't snort and wave her off as another emancipated daddy's little girl, although she does have her issues with her father.

I had my reservations about trying this series but I was pleasantly surprised. Mia Snow, is a kick-a$$ alien hunter who reminds me of a cross between Eve Dallas meets Ellen Ripley meets Sarah Connor. Okay Okay okay, I concieve!! More a less a 3 star read but Im feeling generous considering I actually enjoyed this far more than I expected to.

By all my own bases, this book should be terrible. The idea of aliens somewhat disturbs me, Im not a fan of the heavy-romance or the sci-fi genre and the cover screams absolutely trashy. And yes, at times its absolutely trashy but still, I enjoyed this.

I adore Gena Showalters Lords of the Underworld series, so I was really expecting to love this one as well. Only, I kinda didn't. It was...ok. This book is set sometime in the future and "otherworlders" have come to settle in our (dimension? plane? earth? who knows, it was never explained) world. The Alien Huntress series is set in an alternate future. A little like Eve Dallas, but way better. There are aliens, other-worlders, living among the humans, but they don't have equal rights. They can be killed on sight if they harm a human, are barely tolerated. Humans almost destroyed the Earth when they tried to battle them - and failed - so they in the end agreed on living together, as long as no human was harmed.

Of course there are good and bad other-worlders. And Mia Snow, the heroine of this book is one of the best hunters, people who hunt aliens only, who are trained differently.

Unlike LOTU or other Showalter novels we here have a first person as the narrator. Mia.

Several guys have been found, dead. Mia arrests a girl, Lilla. She's an other-worlder and her brother, Kyrin seems to have a special interest in Mia. *cough cough*

While the story unfolds, Mia has some strange moments. Once she suddenly is able to move extremely fast, then she had a vision or two, feels other-worlders and stuff like that. She runs into Kyrin and he seems to have answers - might even be the criminal she's been looking for - and when her partner, Dallas is close to death and Kyrin the only one who might save him, she doesn't have much time to decide whom to trust and how important her prejudices and her beliefs are.

Growing up with a horrible father who only loved her older brother Kane and either ignored her and her other brother, Dare, or punished her for yet another 'crime', she learned to hate otherworlders who killed Dare when he was barely grown up. Yearning for her father's approval she became a huntress and did what she thought might earn her something, anything from him. After all he hates aliens.

And one of Kyrin's secrets, the one that's worse than the past crimes he tries to make up for, is about her and why her father never had a gentle word for her.

Kyrin and Mia are a nice couple. I didn't really understand how everything could happen so fast, but I liked them together.

One of the cons is Dare. (view spoiler) another one is that I found Kyrin and Mia's relationship not .. enough. I don't know which adject to put in. Hot? Lovely? There was just something missing.

Awaken Me Darkly starts with an interesting mystery, decent characters, and a large dose of butt kicking. The main character is of course pretty and tough, just like every other main character in this genre. She gets along well with the boys, and of course hates the bad guys. Unfortunately, I did not like the main character very much. Mia is extremely close minded and prejudiced against the aliens, and seems to have the typical cop or bounty hunter mentality. She is no different than any of the other cop/hunter style main characters you find. The mystery starts out interesting but becomes obvious quickly. After a certain point there is no investigating, just the main character being told the answers. The big "surprise" can be predicted from the very beginning of the story, and that really decreases my enjoyment, it makes me feel like the author thinks the reader is stupid. The jacket says "a shocking revelation that will shatter everything" and you figure it out from almost the beginning. Yet you are supposed to be surprised when it finally comes out. There is very little that annoys me more than predictable mysteries, thankfully there is a little bit more going on with this book to keep my attention. I liked the inclusion of aliens, the different types of aliens, and the general storyline, and it was decent enough to keep my attention throughout.

About the romance, the main character treats her love interest like crap, which he seems to enjoy. She finally gives in, there are a few sex scenes, and that's about it. There isn't any falling in love or romance really, which I found strange. I've seen more romance in many urban fantasy series and this one is clearly meant to be paranormal romance. So if you are reading this for the romance alone, you may be disappointed. If you were afraid to read this because you enjoy urban fantasy more than paranormal romance you don't have too much to worry about. (less)

Mia Snow is part of AIR, Alien Investigation and Removal Agency. Basically she is an Alien Hunter; that takes out any aliens that are walking on the wrong side of the law. When she gets drawn into a murder case where nude males are left dead in plain site, she finds that the politics involved are extraterrestrial. When her partner, Dallas, is fatally wounded she finds that the super hunky alien Kyrin en Arr is the only on who can help him. Too bad Kyrin is the prime murder suspect, also too bad that Kyrin is the one who can help Mia unfold her dark past.

This book moved at a fast clip. The plot was tight and well-done. I really enjoy Showalter's writing style. The murder investigation and action scenes dominated the book. Anyone who picks this up thinking it's a romance will be deeply disappointed. There is some tension between Mia and Kyrin and one really hot sex scene, but that's pretty much it for romance. Overall I really liked the book. Mia's kick butt attitude reminded me of Anita Blake before she went all succubus on us. Although Mia's character could have had a bit more depth and been a bit more tempered with something other than anger; I still thought she was a pretty good lead.

I was also a little disappointed that they didn't go into more about the different aliens and their culture. Kyrin does go into Arcadian culture somewhat; but not in great depth. I also thought most of the aliens were a bit too humanoid, but well, I guess that's the author's decision.

Overall this was a very engaging and entertaining read. I liked that the story had a more sci-fi focus; it was interesting to read something paranormal-like in genre that took place in the future and with aliens. The book tied up all the main plot points but left some minor ones hanging. It doesn't look like Mia Snow is featured in the rest of the books in this series. Either way, I definitely look forward to reading the next book in the series. I am hooked on Showalter's writing style.(less)

Mia is part of a law enforcement group that specifically deal with alien-related crime. She hunts down the criminals and if she finds them guilty, they are executed. There is no trial.

Mia is a no-nonsense kick-ass alien hunter, she's had a tough life growing up. Her mother left after she was born, her two brothers were murdered and her father stopped loving her and turned abusive when her first brother died when she was just 5 years old. She has no room in her life for love but she cares deeply for her team of very loyal hunters. She is very physical with her emotions, if you upset her she lets you know right away with a punch or a slap to the face - as Kyrin notes “Can you not go one day without using your fists?” which lets you know just how often she gets upset!

Mia encounters Kyrin when she begins investigating a serial killer who is murdering human men and displaying them in public. Kyrin is the obvious suspect he had contact with all of the victims before they died but it isn't as simple as that. Mia is drawn to him, she can sense him, his energy - she's human she shouldn't be able to do that. She fights her attraction to him in order to remain cold impartial but he shows her that he isn't responsible for the murders, that there is a whole lot more to the story than just these murders. He shines a light on her personal life, her very being and reveals that she has a connection to the real murderer.

My only real complaint about this book is the lack of background. Being the first book I expected there to be more information about the different species of aliens, a little more on the supporting characters, even Kyrian and Lilla. I also wanted to follow Mia as she looked for the children, a loose end that was never addressed. I understand the next few books follow different couples so I guess that we will not find out what happened to the children.

I never would have read this type of book if it hadn't been for a group challenge. I'm glad I did. I had read the authors first book in the Lords of the Underworld series which I enjoyed so I naturally picked this book to fit the alien category of the challenge. I'm not sure whether I'll continue reading the series now that I know this story will not be continued but it was an enjoyable read.(less)

Generally speaking, I've liked all of Gena Showalter's books that I've read. That said, this one felt a little ... thin. I see that it's one of her earlier books and I have to say that I can definitely see how her writing has matured and deepened. Which isn't to say that I disliked this book because I thought it was a pretty fun little romp, however it isn't quite at the same level as later books.

Hmmmm.... Well this was different book from Gena Showalter. Written in first person (not my favorite narrative) and the first in her Alien Huntress series. I wasn't too sure I was going to like this book after seeing the relatively low rating from Goodreads, but I was pleasantly surprised - I would give it between a 3.5-4 star rating.

I did not love this book. I first encountered the Alien Huntress series through Showalter's short story in the Deep Kiss of Winter (which I had bought for Kresley Cole's story, having never read Showalter before). That story had heat, intrigue, was fast-paced, and fun.

Le talent de Gena Showalter est de nous offrir un personnage complexe et même si on devine certaines choses sur Mia, l'auteure ne nous propose pas une histoire "simple". L'univers futuriste qu'elle a créé est intéressant et on est impatient d'en savoir plus sur les espèces qu'elle a imaginés.

Nous sommes ici dans une romance paranormale, mais la romance n'est qu'un point du récit, on n'assiste pas aux prouesses sexuelles des protagonistes qui passent leur temps à s'envoyer en l'air plutôt qu'à résoudre l'intrigue du livre. Il y a bien une tension sexuelle entre les deux héros, mais ils ont chacun une mission à accomplir et ils ne se laissent pas dévier de leur but par les sentiments qu'ils ressentent l'un pour l'autre. L'intrigue générale est bien ficelée et on tourne les pages autant pour voir comment vont réagir les héros que pour connaître la fin de l'histoire. On peut cependant regretter cette fin assez abrupte. On espère que les prochains tomes seront aussi bons, voire meilleurs que celui-ci.(less)

I loved the story. It was fast-paced, intriguing and kept me at the edge of my seat. I couldn't put it down. The only thing bothering me is that the characters' personalities weren't credible, like they'd say something at one point and do something completely uncharacteristic in the other. Or just change their minds in a heart beat.
However, I recommend it to everyone who loved Night Huntress, although it doesn't match Cat and Bones' brilliance.

This was overall a good book although I do feel it took to long in the story to get the main two lead characters together and that made it drag in the beginning more. It gets better toward the end and I would have liked more time spent on the development of the lead character's relationship.
