As a previous reviewer mentioned, this Early Reviewer book had no mention in its description that it is a Christian mystery/fiction. In fact there's nothing in the book's description itself that implied it might have any Christian references or go in any direction other than a romance/suspense. Since I wasn't expecting it, I was surprised when out of the blue there was a mention of Christ and devotional praying suddenly on page 44. It confused me b/c there wasn't another mention for that many

I read this book for two reasons: First, it is co-written by one of my favorite authors, Deeanne Gist, and second, it is set in modern day Charleston. That being said, the book would have been better if it had been set in historic Charleston and had a different plot, like a historical romance. However, the authors decided to set it in the present time and to make it a mystery book. The first part of the book, up until about page 120, is completely boring. I had to skim through most of the pages

I'd actually give this 3-1/2 stars!
I've read several books by Gist, so am somewhat familiar with her style. And was interested in seeing how she paired with another author. I really like mystery/suspense type things (books, movies...), and based on personal experience would categorize this book as being somewhere in the middle in terms of rating scale.

Deeanne Gist's romance writing combined with J. Mark Bertrand's suspense writing blend together into a mildly interesting tale.

When I discovered that Bethany House sometimes sends out books for review, I was ecstatic. I love to read and am not able to pick up too many new titles from the library. However, I received Beguiled in the mail and then was swamped. I am remiss in posting a review within a timely manner.

Rylee Monroe has a thriving business as a dog walker and pet sitter, her clientele living in one of the wealthiest parts of Charleston, SC. When returning one of her charges to his home, she surprises a burglar and immediately calls 9-1-1 to summon the police. Dubbed the "Robin Hood burglar" because he always donates the stolen items to a charity, the thief seems to only strike homes where Rylee is employed. Fearing that the police consider her a suspect, she sets out to try and find t

Another "new-to-me author" and one that I can't wait to read more of! I found it extremely difficult to put this book down. It has all the elements of a fantastic book covered: romance, suspense, tested faith and unforgettable, heart-tugging characters. Gist and Bertrand really did an outstanding job together!

Beguiled, by Deeanne Gist and J. Mark Bertrand is a romantic suspense. It's a good suspense but drags a little in the beginning. The "crime", a Robin Hood type, is a bit lame. However as the book advances, the crime rings truer.
There were elements that whispered, "yeah, right" as well. For example, Rylee is being stalked, but she still parks in alley-ways and walks near the woods. (The story is true to its setting in Charleston's wealthiest neighborhood. Perhaps i More...

What do you get when you combine Old South charm, romance, and suspense? BEGUILED by Deeanne Gist and Mark Bertrand.

I liked the story line but some parts were just too far fetched - When a cop pulls up in front of a house and says he needs to take you in for questioning, do you just say "okay" and get into his mustang???? If some crazy robber is on the loose, would you really roller blade at night in a park with earphones????
I also felt like the "Christian" part of the book was very awkward. There was no metion of faith in the first half of the book and then all of a sudden, More...

Rylee is a dogwalker in Charleston and things are getting kind of scary. Several of her clients have been burglarized and she's pretty much the only link between them. And she keeps feeling like someone's watching her. The police obviously think she's involved and she doesn't know how to prove her innocence. Fortunately, there's a really cute newspaper reporter.

Rylee Monroe is a dogwalker to the elite of Charlestown who live South of Broad St. A rash of thefts have been occurring South of Broad, by a criminal dubbed "The Robin Hood Burglar" since the stolen articles end up at churches or charities with notes to sell the piece and give the profits to the needy. Ever since Rylee nearly caught the Robin Hood Burglar in the act, she's been a bundle of nerves.

I picked up this book one evening after supper, and found myself staying awake to finish it until 2am. That doesn't happen very often any more, as my need for sleep usually outweighs any exciting reading. But this story really drew me in and kept my attention.

Beguiled has a lot of things going for it. The characters are interesting. Rylee is a dogwalker struggling to take care of her grandmother, who is living in a nursing home, as well as taking care of herself. She loves her job, and loves her clients (the pets) even more. She is a very likable girl. Logan is a bit edgier--he's a journalist working to land a big true-crime novel, so you're not always sure if he's being motivated by the most honorable intentions. But the better that Rylee (and the r

Overall Review: Who knew that walking dogs and feeding cats could be so dangerous? Rylee just wants to make ends meet and really enjoys her job with the animals of the ‘Upper Crust’. Until she walks in during a robbery! From that point on, she’s scared, accused, acquitted, accused again, and finds out some truths along the way that completely turn her life upside down. Her path crosses early on with a reporter/novelist/crime fighter/baseball player, Logan Woods, who mostly just wants a chan

I read this book because I am a big fan of Deeanne Gist. I was a little apprehensive about reading it, I am one of those people who keeps their lights on all day and night for a week after watching a scary movie.
I delightfully surprised with this book! It had suspense, but not enough to shy me away from finishing it, mixed with the right balance of romance and mystery.

I liked this book but a couple of small things didn't work for me while I was reading the story. I won't add what they are because I don't want to put spoilers out. Suffice it to say that the authors collaboration on this book was a really good finished product. When I had to put the book down, I was wondering what was going to happen next and wanting to put everything else off just to find out. I couldn't figure out why this book was labeled as inspirational genre until way later in story.

I found this book on a Christian author website and I was so excited to find some new authors. I was getting so tired of swear words (for nothing) and the "f" word as part of every dialogue (whatever is that for?). Anyway, so refreshing to find authors who do not stoop to the lowest common denominator to come up with a good story, intriguing mystery and interesting characters.

I started to read this book and got into it because of Charleston. I love Charleston, its amazing and beautiful, full of History. This book does capture that. I would recommend this book just for Charleston. However, I stopped reading it for about 3 weeks, half way in, because I really got bored with it. The plot keep going on and on about the main characters dog walking. Yes she skates on roller blades, yes every single one of her clients gets robbed. I got that the first few chapters in

Honestly? I thought it was boring.
I feel like the collaboration probably took away from each author's respective talents, not that I know anything about Mark Bertrand. The romance was meh and the mystery/thrill was not intriguing. I was kind of excited about the prospect of a mystery-type Deeanne Gist novel, but it was a disappointment.
Plus, I laugh out loud out at some of the things that are supposed to be... sexy, if you will.

I love a book that I can sit down with and really get into. You know the kind... you find that half of the book is already finished and you haven't even realized that hours have passed away. Beguiled is one of those stories. It has that "Cozy Mystery" feel to it and you just want to curl up with it and keep reading and reading. It's fun, full of mystery, some romance, and you can't help but love the main character and her friends. The plot is good, the mystery keeps you on your toes,

The styles of the two authors blended together nicely. This was a very well-written book, with the perfect mesh of adventure and romance. The crime novel portion was interesting, although the ending was as predictable as these things usually are. The religious aspects of the novel, while important, definitely took a back seat to the crime aspect of the story, so I think that anyone, Christian or not, would enjoy this book. It is not at all preachy.
