When novelists Deeanne Gist and J. Mark Bertrand first met in a Houston critique group, they never expected where friendship would take them. She wrote romance; he wrote crime novels. But growing respect for each other's work culminated in the decision to try blending their talents into this wonderfully engaging story merging romance and mystery.

I loved the book. The characters are so fleshed out and interesting. The heroine is a strong independent woman and an incredibly hard worker she not only takes care of herself she takes care of her elderly grandmother in a nursing home. Her grandmother raised her when her father left and her mother committed suicide when she was young. As the suspense builds and the mystery of her past unfolds we find out that neither are true and she uncovers what really happened to her parents and who was resp...more
As a previous reviewer mentioned, this Early Reviewer book had no mention in its description that it is a Christian mystery/fiction. In fact there's nothing in the book's description itself that implied it might have any Christian references or go in any direction other than a romance/suspense. Since I wasn't expecting it, I was surprised when out of the blue there was a mention of Christ and devotional praying suddenly on page 44. It confused me b/c there wasn't another mention for that many mo...more
Suspense is a genre I wish more Christian authors would undertake to perfect. Though difficult to master, this category holds us captive from page one and only very reluctantly releases us at the end of the story . . . unless it sneaks under our skin and invades our dreams. It's one of those genres we love to hate. It sets our nerves pleasantly on edge and we jump at shadows for days or weeks afterwards. If written well, suspense novels allow us to feel as though we live, breathe and solve the...more
If you would like to get some light entertainment, this easy-to-read novel would do the job. The plot is quite simple and predictable; it's not thought provoking nor enthralling and even gets a little dull in some parts. However, it could be a nice way to spend a worry-free evening.
The book tells the story of a kind young woman who makes a living by walking wealthy people's dogs in Charleston, a place that keeps a big family secret. She is sweet and naive, and loves the pets she works with. A se...more

"Beguiled" is a Christian romance with a strong suspense element. The romance started out as "Oh, he is sooo handsome, and look at his BMW!" and "Wow, her legs go from here to there in that miniskirt!"--as in, solely physical attraction, but they did eventually get around to appreciating the kindness and other personality traits of each other.
The main characters were very earnest, and they dealt with realistic issues. The suspense was well-written and was mainly created by the threat of physical...more

I read this book for two reasons: First, it is co-written by one of my favorite authors, Deeanne Gist, and second, it is set in modern day Charleston. That being said, the book would have been better if it had been set in historic Charleston and had a different plot, like a historical romance. However, the authors decided to set it in the present time and to make it a mystery book. The first part of the book, up until about page 120, is completely boring. I had to skim through most of the pages...more

I'd actually give this 3-1/2 stars!
I've read several books by Gist, so am somewhat familiar with her style. And was interested in seeing how she paired with another author. I really like mystery/suspense type things (books, movies...), and based on personal experience would categorize this book as being somewhere in the middle in terms of rating scale.
I liked the storyline, though I felt it more suspense than romance. It is well-written, if a bit too detailed with descriptions at times. However,...more

Deeanne Gist's romance writing combined with J. Mark Bertrand's suspense writing blend together into a mildly interesting tale.

When I discovered that Bethany House sometimes sends out books for review, I was ecstatic. I love to read and am not able to pick up too many new titles from the library. However, I received Beguiled in the mail and then was swamped. I am remiss in posting a review within a timely manner.

Rylee Monroe has a thriving business as a dog walker and pet sitter, her clientele living in one of the wealthiest parts of Charleston, SC. When returning one of her charges to his home, she surprises a burglar and immediately calls 9-1-1 to summon the police. Dubbed the "Robin Hood burglar" because he always donates the stolen items to a charity, the thief seems to only strike homes where Rylee is employed. Fearing that the police consider her a suspect, she sets out to try and find the real th...more
I picked up this book because I love reading anything by Deeanne Gist. Having said that, I was quite nervous to read a collaboration book set in the modern time, since Ms. Gist always writes historical fiction. I was suprised to find that I really enjoyed this book.

Another "new-to-me author" and one that I can't wait to read more of! I found it extremely difficult to put this book down. It has all the elements of a fantastic book covered: romance, suspense, tested faith and unforgettable, heart-tugging characters. Gist and Bertrand really did an outstanding job together!

Beguiled, by Deeanne Gist and J. Mark Bertrand is a romantic suspense. It's a good suspense but drags a little in the beginning. The "crime", a Robin Hood type, is a bit lame. However as the book advances, the crime rings truer.
There were elements that whispered, "yeah, right" as well. For example, Rylee is being stalked, but she still parks in alley-ways and walks near the woods. (The story is true to its setting in Charleston's wealthiest neighborhood. Perhaps in that neighborhood it's impossi...more

What do you get when you combine Old South charm, romance, and suspense? BEGUILED by Deeanne Gist and Mark Bertrand.
Rylee Monroe is a young lady whose past haunts her. She's not quite sure about it, and has some memories that lurk just below the surface. In spite of it all she's relatively happy, enjoys her work as a dog walker, and loves taking care of her elderly grandmother.

This is a cute mystery/romance about a dog walker whose clients end up being robbed, but just one item is stolen and not the most expensive thing the thief could take. It's up to Rylee the dog walker and a cute reporter named Logan to figure it out. This is a Christian romance/mystery so there are religious references throughout. I must say that the religious references came off a little preachy at times and not natural. I think that the authors could have weaved faith into the story in a more s...more
I liked the story line but some parts were just too far fetched - When a cop pulls up in front of a house and says he needs to take you in for questioning, do you just say "okay" and get into his mustang???? If some crazy robber is on the loose, would you really roller blade at night in a park with earphones????
I also felt like the "Christian" part of the book was very awkward. There was no metion of faith in the first half of the book and then all of a sudden, Rylee is praying and rediscovering...more

Rylee is a dogwalker in Charleston and things are getting kind of scary. Several of her clients have been burglarized and she's pretty much the only link between them. And she keeps feeling like someone's watching her. The police obviously think she's involved and she doesn't know how to prove her innocence. Fortunately, there's a really cute newspaper reporter.

I picked up this book one evening after supper, and found myself staying awake to finish it until 2am. That doesn't happen very often any more, as my need for sleep usually outweighs any exciting reading. But this story really drew me in and kept my attention.

Beguiled has a lot of things going for it. The characters are interesting. Rylee is a dogwalker struggling to take care of her grandmother, who is living in a nursing home, as well as taking care of herself. She loves her job, and loves her clients (the pets) even more. She is a very likable girl. Logan is a bit edgier--he's a journalist working to land a big true-crime novel, so you're not always sure if he's being motivated by the most honorable intentions. But the better that Rylee (and the r...more
Overall Review: Who knew that walking dogs and feeding cats could be so dangerous? Rylee just wants to make ends meet and really enjoys her job with the animals of the ‘Upper Crust’. Until she walks in during a robbery! From that point on, she’s scared, accused, acquitted, accused again, and finds out some truths along the way that completely turn her life upside down. Her path crosses early on with a reporter/novelist/crime fighter/baseball player, Logan Woods, who mostly just wants a chance to...more
