Heroine takes on half-sister's illegitimate son as her own to keep her nephew from being adopted out since no one in her family wants him, fearing a scandal. She pretends to be a widow until her son's father's cousin visits her 4 yrs later & proposes marriage to help legitimize the boy & help them financially. But Hero doesn't tell her that part of his motive to marry so soon is due to his recently-inherited title, which demands he marry & produce an heir soon. Hero thinks she's stil...more
In Scandal They Wed is true to its genre, focusing on the development of the relationship between two people, who before finding happiness must go through the trials and tribulations. Typically these involve lies, scandal, betrayals, and misunderstandings of some form that will keep the couple apart for momentarily.
I liked the premise, simple enough and not really new but I was interested in the writing style (the author is new to me), and of course the story. The good thing was that the story...more

This was the first novel I've read by Sophie Jordan. After reading several review that indicated she was a fabulous writer, I purchased this book. I was not impressed. Don't get me wrong, Ms. Jordan can write but I did not like the character Spencer, the so called hero of this story. He is arrogant, vindictive, and just plain horny which he concludes is love. After the distasteful way he treats Evie, I was hardpressed to believe she could be in love with him or why she would want to be. Sophie's...more
This really wasn't one of my favorite historical romance novels. Marriage's of convenience is one of my storylines but this one just got on my nerve. The heroine agrees to marry the hero if that means giving her son a good life and in turn she will give the hero an heir. But of course when it's her turn to fulfill her part of the bargain she has reservations and ask that they get to know each other a little more before they consumate the marriage. When they finally do consumate the marriage it i...more
The writing is rushed, the characters underdeveloped and following lines of reasoning I simply cannot understand and the book is chock-full of endless moments of inner reflection of the heroine where she ponders if she should finally sleep with her husband or not, or maybe, or why if he doesn't want her or does he hate her or maybe like her, should she tell her secret or not - blah blah blah...(gets pretty annoying pretty fast). Oh, and Spencer is a prick with serious anger issues accompanied by...more
In the interest of full disclosure, I should say that I love Sophie Jordan's books. There isn't one that I don't think is incredibly well-crafted, and so it seems inevitable that I would love In Scandal They Wed. And I did. ISTW is reminiscent of the very best of the genre -- the Johanna Lindsey and Julie Garwood days, when heroes were handsome and troubled and heroines made mistakes that mucked everything up, and we, as readers, just chewed our nails, wondered how happily ever after would ever...more
This is my last book in the trilogy of the Penwich School. I started with the third book and backtracked my reading to number one and two.
I find this story is at par with the other two in the series. And the story premise is interesting. How Evie sacrificed herself to be known as widow to raise her bastard nephew.
I do find, Linnie, the mother to Evie's nephew, Nicholas as a weak person, and also Evie's father who lived in the shadow of her stepmother.
And dear Spencer is a moron clinging to hopes...more

Ouch! This book was painful.
The concept had potential, it truly did. However, It was executed very poorly.
I found myself, scanning the last 100ish pages, only reading the dialouge, just to get to the end.
I have read worse books than this, not many, but some. It was so bad, In fact, I actually spent more time feeling empathetic towards the author then I did actually relishing what I was reading.

Evie Cross, newly evicted from The Penwich School for Virtuous Girls, returns home to discover a case of compromised virtue. Not hers, mind you, but that of her well loved sister, Linnie who foolishly found herself in the bed of a man she thought she loved and subsequently got herself pregnant. Linnie was her parents last hope of weaseling their way into better society and if her condition is discovered, all of their nefarious scheming has been for nothing.

In Scandal They Wed, the second in Sophie Jordan’s Penwich girl’s series finds Evelyn Cross with a baby to raise that is not her own. Indeed, the baby boy is her sister’s bastard child and to avoid any kind of scandal directed at her beloved sister or her unloving parents, she decides to take the child and raise him as her own. Life is as normal as could be until Spencer Lockhart shows up into her life claiming to heed his cousin’s dying wish that he would look after his paramour and their love...more
In Scandal They Wed is a story of serious mistaken identities, or perhaps the better term would be mistaken lives. Evelyn, known as Evie, has sacrificed her entire life to raising Nicholas, her sister’s illegitimate son. For nearly five years she’s lived in a small village, afraid someone will guess she’s not really the Widow Cross. Things are hard, but she’s happy and Nicholas is happy and that’s all that matters to her. And then Spencer Lockhart turns up at her door to see Nicholas.

Just your typical historical romance with major problems, where there is an alphahole who thinks that everything should go his way and spends half the book terrorizing the poor heroine. Seriously, no means no, and the fact that he couldn't even understand that and she had to fight him off or talk him out of it half the time disturbed me to no end. Someone really needs to tell these authors that this is NOT romantic, it's disgusting and just blegh-inducing.

This book was all over the place so I ended up skimming half it. It had one of those conflicts that didn't make much sense - the heroine makes an assumption about the hero so she misleads him big time and this leads to a huge, stupid misunderstanding. There was a lot of fighting so you wonder how these people supposedly fell in love.
This was my first book by this author and it will probably be my last, unless something else comes highly recommended.

It is a harsh truth that lies will out, even ones that are told for the best of reasons. As a longtime reader of historical romance this story follows fairly familiar territory, what makes it an engaging read is the fact that if another woman were in Evie's position she would never have had her courage to undertake rearing and caring for her half sister's child all the while putting her own needs second to his. Living in fear of being exposed and having the boy taken away is a terrifying prospec...more
The story gets slightly better as it progresses. This is a bit of light reading, really. There's not much of drama going around, so you don't have to bust your brain trying to connect the dots. There were moments though when I feel like bashing my head against the wall, screaming for Evie to just be honest and tell Spencer the truth. But that would mean the story will end in oh, around page 70, or so.
Stories like this vex me so. The tension between the characters is just so vivid, and then Evie has to do something stupid like hide her identity from him. Just tell the truth already!! Why, oh why, does it seem like a good idea to hide who you are, especially when you have an evil stepmother. Clearly, the truth will come out at the most inopportune moment.
Again I loved this 2nd book in the series. I spent most of it loving and hating Spencer at the same time and panicking with Evie that her secret will come out. I don't care if the writing isn't stellar the characters rapture me and literally make me read aloud or talk to myself. I'm not a mushy romance kinda girl but I'm just happy when I'm reading and I can't ask for much more in a book.
Did not care for this one as much as the previous in the series. The beginning was strong and promising but somewhere in the middle I lost interest and had to force myself to plod on. The ending was worth sticking with the book as it was again strong and wonderful. I am glad I read this, the emotions were well written and the plot was different but very contrived.
Good historical romance. Enjoyed it greatly. Maybe a little too much worry about truths on the heroine's part and when to tell but understandable in my view. She had been hiding things, for good reason, for a long time.
