I think I enjoyed this one more because my first grader loved it so much.
He would probably give this one 5 stars. He loves a good dog story, and asked to keep listening to the audiobook every time we got in the car. I loved the gasps, and cheers from the backseat as we listened.

Despite some issues the outdated female role portrayals, I actually really enjoyed this. The descriptions of dogs can't help but to win affection and the kids' feelings feel honest and real. Duncan does a good job of balancing male and female interest by having two main protagonists, one of each gender. However, while the book has been updated with the names of the characters in the movie, the gender stereotypes have not been changed. The girls do the cleaning and feeding housework while the boy...more

Hotel For Dogs by Lois Duncan is a very interesting and desiring book. Its basically about 2 kids loving dogs, but cant have any in the house cause "aunt alice" is allergic to them. But they help lots of dogs just on the street and make this huge hotel for them. With food, water, and games. They did get caught by the cops, but they had a reason to keep all these dogs in this hotel. Me, myself, love DOGS and would do anything for them. They are so cute and innocent. I really recommend this book f...more

The movie "Hotel for Dogs" is, surprisingly, based on this book -
"Hotel for Dogs" (who'd have guessed?)! This book is about a boy, Bruce, and his sister, Andy, who move from their Albuquerque home to New Jersey. They, unfortunately, have to leave their dashund, Bebe, behind, but they do, however, manage to rescue a stray with puppies and move her into the abandoned house down the way. Son that one stray turns into six, and they start to board dogs there to make money. But will they be able to k...more

Set in the 1970’s, Hotel For Dogs by Lois Duncan, is the story of Andi and Bruce Walker who find a dog at their aunt’s house and decide to take care of this dog as well as the neighborhood dogs. Their dad got a new job in New Jersey. Andi and Bruce had to stay at their aunt’s house until their dad could find a house for them to stay . Andi, who is ten years old, likes to write poetry. She has a dog named Bebe , but couldn’t bring it to her aunt’s because her aunt is allergic to dogs. Bruce is in...more

This book had its moments to shine and moments when the book felt like it started dragging. The movie was inspired by the book not an adaption but I didn't know this so I was expecting something like the movie when reading the book. Emma Roberts character in the movie was 16 while she was 10 going on 11 in the story and Jake T. Austin's character was 13 or 14 while in the book he was 12. Bruce and Andi are not orphans like they are in the movie. The book in general is a short read and very pleas...more

The Walkers move in with their aunt, leaving Andi's dog, Bebe behind. Andi is heartbroken. Then one rainy night, when her father comes home from work, a small, brown dog walks in and up the stairs, while every one was distracted to dry the fancy rugs Mr.Walker had gotten wet.

Reasons I like this book-

Reason 1- This book has many dogs in it and I LOVE dogs.

Reason 2- I believe people should always help animals. Andi and Bruce started a dog hotel rescuing strays, an abused dog and unwanted puppies.

For dog lovers. Andi and Bruce are uprooted to a new town while their dad trains for a his new promotion. They live with an elderly aunt who is allergic to animals, start at a new school, and have to leave their pet with former neighbors. One rainy night Andi finds a stray dog who then has puppies! What to do, what to do. Conveniently just a few houses away is an empty home for sale--voila a new home for the stray and her family. Of course, other stray dogs begin to show up needing a home thus t...more

It was a fun trip back into the past to review Lois Duncan's HOTEL FOR DOGS.

I first read this heart-warming story about 10 years ago with my daughter. Now, with a few changes I've heard, it's a major motion picture.

In the original 1971 version, Liz and her brother, Bruce, leave their home in New Mexico to move to the east coast. Their father has accepted a new job, and they are temporarily moving in with Aunt Alice. It might be th...more

What a fun childrens' book! Both my brother and I liked "Hotel for Dogs". It was a charming, childhood story. After all, wouldn't every pet-loving kid relish in the idea of creating a hotel for doggie visitors? Sounds like a terrific idea to me. I wish that I could join in the with the characters in the book. If you're looking for a fun book with new original storyline concepts, this should be the one you pick up.

A brother and sister begin keeping stray dogs at an empty house down the street. Andy (short for Andrea) also loves writing and is always mailing her work to magazines for publication. If you have read Lois Duncan's autobiography (Chapters: My Growth as a Writer), you can see how Andy is actually a young Lois Duncan. The author included details from her real life into the Andy character.

The heroes of this book are kids who love dogs. What's not to love? They can tell the popular kid in their new town is mean because of how he treats his dog. What a lesson!

This is a simpler book than some of Duncan's YA fare like I Know What You Did Last Summer, which I remember loving as a kid. Wish I'd read this as a youngster!

what i learned from this book is that when you move to a place that you don't like, you don't want to be judgemental because after a while you might actually like it at the end. also i learned that if you run a dog hotel and your aunt is allergic to dogs, you might want to make sure that you keep the dogs away from your aunt.

what i learned from this book is that when you go somewhere you might not like it so you don't want to be judgemental. also i learned that if you start a dog hotel and your aunt is allergic to dogs you might want to make sure that your aunt doesn't get near any dogs in your hotel.

Andi is upset because she cannot take her dachshund, Bebe, on a cross-country trip.
Later Andi finds a stray dog. Other dogs seem drawn to the girl, who ultimately provides temporary housing for nine dogs in a vacant house.

Great book for kids who like dogs. Andi and her brother Bruce have moved from New Mexico to New Jersey. Andi had to leave her dog Bebe behind. She ends up helping stray dogs and makes some friends along the way.

I read this a long time after I saw the film. It's a more innocent, less hip version of the same story. I enjoyed it a lot. It IS a little dated, but still great characters and plot.

I like this book because I like animal. So this book was special to me. I was glad to read this book. I thought many things by this book's main character, Andi. she loves animals too. I didn't imagine about hotel for dogs before I read this book. But If she have real hotel for dogs, I will want to go.

Duncan knows how to captivate the minds of children who love dogs and have a house full of them! It's witty, funny, and deals with problems young adults transferring over from elementary to middle school. Each character is described very well and the story really paints a picture for itself. The story is unique and yet teaches young adults valuable lessons.

I always thought of Duncan as a thriller writer but this young adult book is so cute!It was really funny as calls out to all dog lovers out...more

It was cute....great family book and great classroom book (for grades 4 and 5) Adding it to my 'nerd-list' of books vs. movies. Movie is loosely based on the novel...both were 'cute'. (I can't seem to find another adjective for this...) ;)

Yeah it's different than the movie but still... I liked it. I am a big dog fan so I just had to give it a read. Turned out that i like the book just as much as the movie.

I thought this book was a very good book. It was easy to follow and funny as well. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to read an easy, funny book.

i'm interested to see how different the movie is from the book...i've only made it to chapter 3 and i can already tell there is some "dated" things they'll have to overcome...

so i finished...and from what i understand the book has very little to do with the movie other than the title...the book itself wasn't all that great...i expected more

I think it's a good book, but I think that their were some spelling mistakes in it because some of it didn't make sense
Anne Marshall
I liked the things they changed for the movie because it worked better than the book, but it was still a good book.
Brandon
The kids in this book don't talk like kids; they talk like 60-year-old women. Or maybe this is how kids talked back before I was born, when the book was originally written. We'll never know.

Just about to start...go see the movie everyone! They are donating proceeds to animal shelters!
