Wow, I am speechless after reading this story. I really loved this book. It was raw, compelling and gritty; had surprises at every turn. I am truly impressed with this author.

Here's my description of this book. We start out with Azazel in her boyfriends truck "Toby" and she's trying to fondle him when clearly he doesn't want to get it on with her. He has told her over and over he does not want to have sex with her. Note that the first half of the book is of Azazel complaining about how everyone in the whole world has had sex except her. Ok back to the truck....after Toby has shut her down for the umpteenth time they see a boy running through the woods, Azazel jumps out and tells him to get in the truck. My problem with that is who in there right mind just sees someone running in the woods and decides this stranger needs to get in the truck and take him home with her....CRAZY!
Ok back to this atrocity, Toby and Azazel take this boy back to her house to talk to her parents. They find out that his name is Jason and that he was running from someone, but he won't elaborate who these someones are. They can't find any records of him,not transcripts,no birth records, nada zilch. But Azazel's parents take him in as one of their many foster children. At this point Azazel is pretty much obsessed with him, ah did I mention that she's also obsessed about wanting to have sex ALL THE TIME
Pretty much nothing happens except the whole town acting strange, they keep saying strange things and are keeping a close eye on Jason. They have been holding back from Azazel saying strange things.
Ok about halfway through the book is when it starts getting really freaky, I'll spare you the details and just say it involves satanist rituals, SEX rape,and murder.(view spoiler) It's safe to say this book was not for me. It was Stupid, emphasis the STUPID. I didn't care what happened to the characters, I just wanted it to be over or for someone to poke my eyes out with a fire poker, which ever came first. I would rather cut my own tongue out than recommend this toilet diarrhea water to anyone. (less)

This book was a freebie, and I often have lower expectations for freebie books (I know this is a form of book snobbery, but it is what it is). I still like reading the freebies though, because I do find books that surprise me with how much I enjoy them. This was one of those books.

I still like reading the freebies though, because I do find books that surprise me with how much I enjoy them. This was one of those books.

Other than the fact she can't get her boyfriend to sleep with her, Azazel is pretty happy with her life, which includes unconventional parents, foster siblings, and a pretty uneventful existence. But when Jason runs in front of her boyfriend's truck, things change. A mystery unfolds that involves a strange human war between Satanists and a Christian group, and the two teenagers are caught in the middle.

The story drew me in from the beginning. The writing is solid and not overly dramatic. It's definitely told from a teenager perspective, but I found that I wasn't annoyed by Azazel's character (yes, most teen characters annoy me to an extent, even though I enjoy YA fiction). I liked the weird twists and turns the story took and I thought the basic premise was interesting.

To an extent, I thought the way the author handled sexuality was decent. She didn't flower it up and make a first time encounter sound like a magical event. I do feel like there are missing aspects to this theme in the book, though. Azazel talks about feeling unfulfilled, but then the subject is dropped, not resolved. Which might be okay, because this is the first of a trilogy, so I can only assume at this point that the subject will come up again.

The pacing was a bit off. Though the story moved along well for the most part, there were a few places that seemed to drag, and certain scenes that felt like they went longer than they needed to. I also don't feel like this one lends itself to be easily classified in either a genre or an age group. The characters are teens, but the subject matter and certain scenes definitely go to a dark place. I suppose this could be classified as an action adventure story, but there are elements of romance, supernatural, and religion that just touch the fringes of classification. While this doesn't bother me too much, some readers might find it off putting.

The pros definitely out weighed the cons though,and I'm hoping I like the other books in the trilogy just as well. (less)

She told me everything without the details that would have the reader connect with the characters, their surroundings, and what is happening to them. However, my interest was slightly peaked at the end of the story so that I might just look into reading the second and third installments.

I understand that the point of view is limited to that of a naive, overprotected, relatively innocent 17 year old girl; however, most of the time Zaza sounded like she was 13 or 14 that was a little hard to take or believe. Plus living with a house filled with that many boys would take some of the naivete out of her...she'd be more brash. Not saying that the very opening scene doesn't show her as brash...

This is most definitely a story that should NOT be labeled YA, unless bookstores create new categories for Tween YA and Older Teen YA. This is the latter all the way - rated R or NC-17 if it were a movie.

[Spoiler alert]
Let's get to the nitty gritty, shall we. I was completely floored by the main focus of the story being sex. It might be appropriate to call that part of the book 17 Shades of Grey.

The plot twist...I found it neither disgusting nor appalling mostly because I picked up on the HUGE clues 1) the main character is named after a demon, 2) her best friend's name is the same as the mother of all demons, 3) the texts and emails included the "number of the beast" and mentioned "the vessel," 4) her parents mentioned Samhain (sp?), 5) Homecoming was on Halloween [which is way too late for a high school homecoming], 6) there are no churches in town, 7) Zaza chose to be a Vestal Virgin for Halloween, and 8) Zaza's mother gave her a pentagram necklace to wear. All that adds up to no good.

A town full of Satanists is not a new plot point. I think there a few horror movies out there like that. And the main scene could have been so much worse than black rose petals, candles, and "black mass" rituals. not to mention that the violence that follows Zaza and Jason's escape is the same as any R-rated chase or gangster movie (thinking Pulp Fiction, The Godfather, etc.).

What I found most disturbing were the clues Hallam was putting together with regards to Jason's conception...I started thinking that the two were brother and sister. That would truly have been icky. I know people who have thrown books where that allegation was made a plot point.

Will I read it again? No. Was it a waste of time? Meh, not really. Will I read the remaining two books? Maybe if the eBooks get to $.99.

First off, I must say that the main character in this book was really irritating. She was completely clueless. In every way possible. Ok. Just going to keep this pretty straightforward... Nothing happened for the entire first half of the book. Except for people being super creepy and giving obvious hints as to what was going on. I loved the three books that completed the Jason and Azazel Trilogy, i read them all in a week, i coudn´t stop! The author created a true story, with real characters, real places, and for God´s sake, a real lenguaje and normal sexual tension!!!!
This how the teenagers actually are, of course it has a lot of violence, rudennes, sex and feelings, but it is all put in the right place so it all has sense. For my was refreshing, new, young, alive!!!!

Yeah... some more YA fiction... It was a quick read. I liked some of the main characters and the pace at which the plot moved. I felt the build up to the SURPRISE reveal but will say it felt like a plotline dreamt up by a teenager.

Azazel lives her life in a small town. It's boring. Nothing really happens except for the occasional sneaking out after curfew to attend parties at farms. She doesn't do anything too wild. No one lets her, not even her boyfriend. So when a guy comes darting out of the woods like a mad man, as though someone were chasing him, well that's just about the most exciting thing she could imagine. Lucky for him and her, Azazel's parents tend to take in foster kids - especially the kinds that would be on the run from something. Of course he (Jason) ends up staying with them. Jason isn't very open to telling them what he's running from beyond the fact that it's dangerous men, and no he's not a criminal. Azazel is fascinated while everyone else seems either convinced he won't be a part of her life for very long so she shouldn't get too close or almost jealous. As no facts about Jason are learned (literally -- no one seems to find any proof of his existence), little clues that something just ain't right in town keep getting thrown in Azazel's face. But those clues have nothing to do with Jason, they seem to be about her own life. Problem is she's so obsessed with Jason and frankly just so oblivious that even when it is really obvious that she should be paying attention and asking questions -- well, she's not.

Then Halloween hits and all hell breaks loose.

Azazel finally learns that the mysteries behind Jason's life can't hold a candle to the secrets that her own town, her own family were hiding. Threats of Satanic rituals, rape, and murder send Azazel and Jason down a dangerous path as they both try to find truths that may better left unfound -- but they don't really have a choice.

Apparently part of a series it was actually pretty good if you don't mind a dark read. It actually feels like a complete story so I'm undecided about whether or not I need to read on. In that sense the author did a good thing. If you don't like the book but feel like you have to read any series you started because of that to be continued thing -- well this really can stand on its own, you won't feel like you have to continue on. But if you fall in love with the characters so much you have to know what's next well, there's more.(less)

I gave this book three stars instead of two because it has a lot of potential, but doesn't deliver. It starts off light-hearted enough, with a teenage girl and her teenage problems and, of course, there's a secret being kept from her. Chambers does well, dropping enough hints at the secret to keep us interested without giving away what it is until the very last second. The plot movement was simple, yet believable, and the premise hooks you in pretty much immediately. I really thought I had a win...more I gave this book three stars instead of two because it has a lot of potential, but doesn't deliver. It starts off light-hearted enough, with a teenage girl and her teenage problems and, of course, there's a secret being kept from her. Chambers does well, dropping enough hints at the secret to keep us interested without giving away what it is until the very last second. The plot movement was simple, yet believable, and the premise hooks you in pretty much immediately. I really thought I had a winner here.

However, the book does a complete flip-flop. The whole first half of the book suggests something fairly innocent and fun to read; but, when the secret is revealed and everything is laid out on the table, you realize it's something much darker and more sinister than that. Then, after everything goes to hell, we are thrust into a whole new story with new people and new circumstances. Everyone from the first half of the book is either killed or forgotten about within a chapter or two of the secret's exposure. The second half of the book was so different from the first half that I couldn't even attempt to reconcile it. It all went downhill so fast. The worst part was how morbid everything became. Jason and Azazel's circumstances turn into something so tormented and sad that I felt like there was no hope for them, like they had no way out. Not to mention their characters have a polar shift in personality, too. Anyway, I began to feel like the only way this book would end was with Jason and Azazel's suicides; it was that depressing. They didn't end up killing themselves; however, the real ending was so contrived, ridiculous, and unbelievable that I almost wished they had. Which by the way, this book is supposed to be part one in a trilogy, but the way Breathless ends seems like it should just be the one book. It turned out so bad that I'm not going to read the next book anyway.

In short, it had a lot of potential, but turned out to be something way more dark and depressing than I expected. Proceed with caution.

I might also mention that the sample will not give you a good idea of what the book is really like. Since the first half of the book - and the portion of which the sample is taken - is completely different than the second half, there is no way you would be able to get a good feel for the book by reading the sample. Especially since the first part of the book deceives you into thinking it's a good book.

P.S.- If you're at all religious, this book will probably offend you.(less)

I really don't think this should be a YA book. In that genre I find it completely inappropriate. I wasn't even able to finish. Once I hit the plot twist halfway through I literally felt sick and had to stop reading for fear I would lose my lunch. This is one of those books that crosses over- paranormal, urban fantasy, thriller, YA, adult, romance, horror, apocalypse, conspiracy, adventure, and more. Wow. I don't even know how to categorize this. Other than brilliant. It's definitely that. Brilliant. Tell your friends. Tell total strangers. This book rocks.

What begins as a sweet but compelling YA romance morphs, midway through, into something dark but even more romantic and, at the same time, sickly humorous. I cannot count the times I found myself laughing out loud then looking over my shoulder a little nervously because Chambers manages to make the inappropriate and the forbidden approachable and even funny. If it shouldn't and can't be happening, it will and does.
Azazel and Jason both make compelling romantic leads. Both are strong, intriguing, and have great chemistry. Jason is spot-on as the strong, mysterious, but oddly vulnerable boy who defends Azazel from bullies and even relatively mild insults with militaristic fervor. His intelligence and logical arguments are refreshing in a YA romance. Azazel is bewitching as the center of her offbeat hurricane of a family. I did find fault here, though; How could either one be so gullible? Jason's longing for normality is understandable, but Azazel? Come on! How could she not have seen something like this coming? Beyond that, though, they aren't entirely likeable. They aren't meant to be. They are... complex, and therein lies their charm. Azazel and Jason do not move in a good v. evil, black v. white world, although everyone around them behaves as if they do. It drives them closer together, but it also forces them into choices that mark and scar them. Chambers leaves us with the hope that together, there is not only healing, but destiny as well. However, she leaves us hanging as to whether that destiny will be a happy one, or a further descent into chaos and destruction.(less)

Who is giving this book so many 4 and 5 star review here and on Amazon? Thirteen-year-old girls, maybe, as the book sounds like it was written by one. The plot is ludicrous, the heroine too stupid to believe, the writing juvenile, and the editing barely passable - errors like "your/you're" and "then/than" are common. Azazel and Jason have a connection right from the very start, but neither of them could possibly understand just how deep that connection goes. Although you can tell right away that Jason's had a strange past, Azazel is about to find out that her own life may not be what it seems.

Overall, I thought this book was ok. It wrapped up nicely at the end, which didn't make me want to pick up the sequel, but did make me happy (Open endings drive me nuts).
