Mary has a habit of writing in STRONG female characters, to the point where you wonder if they would ever find a man useful at all. Thankfully she managed to create a strong, likeable male lead.

POSSIBLE SPOILER AHEAD... What I liked the most was that he could make the women in his life feel special. Emma (one of the daughters) was totally gobsmacked when Silas told her they were beautiful and you could see it mattered to her a great deal. They've never had a father who delighted in them. Book #2 "The Husband Tree" in Mary Connealy's series Montana Marriages
This was a great story of a feisty woman who had married and buried three husbands, you will be tickled when you find out what the Husband tree is-I liked this cute idea in a book.
Belle had never been treated well from any of the husbands and had a great mistrust of men by the time she met Silas.
Silas had been raised in a home of women and was fed up being around women professes to never marry and then he meets Belle.

THE HUSBAND TREE by Mary Connealy

I won Mary Connealy's book The Husband Tree in a contest. And I promised her I'd even try and read the book. But I didn't even have to try. From the first line I was drawn in. I got the book in the mail and finished it within three hours the same day. Now I know what the buzz is about.

The Husband Tree is the story about, Belle, a woman who lives in a hard country, Montana. After marrying and burying three husband's, and raising her four daughter's, she's become...more

After reading the Lassoed In Texas series, I wasn't in a big hurry to go on to Montana Marriages. I enjoyed the stories in Lassoed but I didn't really admire the male characters. I felt they were all a bit too clueless and unbelievable. One of the most important things to me in a romance is that I have to be able to respect the male lead so I hesitated to even read other books by Mary Connealy. I have to say after reading The Husband Tree and Montana Rose that I have been happily convinced that...more

This is the second book in the Montana Marriages series. Belle Tanner's story about her 3 husbands and her brood of girls was introduced in the previous book.

Belle has a habit of picking no-good husbands and giving birth to girls that look just like the husbands. In the last book, she gave birth to her 4th girl that looked just like her 3rd husband, Anthony. Anthony is just as no-good as the first 3 and by the beginning of this book he has already found a way to be buried under The Husband Tree...more

When I want to read a top-notch western romance, I need not look any farther than Mary Connealy. Her books have that punch of humor that I love to get the occasional taste from, as well as a spine-curling romance that makes me sigh every time.

The Husband Tree was no exception. It had a great mixture of humor and romance, and a likeable hero and heroine in Silas and Belle. Both of 'em were stubborn as mules, and as hard-headed as they come about the opposite sex. But each one had a very tender s...more

For the most part I would classify this book as an easy and fairly mindless read. I often enjoy these types of books however, this one did not suit me.
For about the first four chapters I was confused. I felt the author was not clear and I was confused about some characters. Although I remained confused until some chapters later, I decided not to re-read the section because I didn't care.
From about chapter 9, the author introduces another story line. We then follow Wade and Glowing Sun. This st...more

The Husband Tree is the 2nd book in Mary Connealy's Montana Marriages series. That being said you don't have to read the series in order. Sure it will help with some little things, but it doesn't effect the overall enjoyment of the series.

Belle Tanner has been quite a few husbands, and after burying the last one she vows no more. Even her daughters agree they've all been worthless. They can handle the ranch all by themselves. Silas Harden feels the same way about women. Too many wiles and they j...more

This is perhaps my favorite of all the Mary Connealy books I've read to date. Belle and Silas stole my heart from the start. Mary has a way of weaving important truths into a story of troubled, misguided, but always spunky, determined characters--and laced with a skillful touch of humor. Burned by a series of good-for-nothing husbands, Belle is determined never again to fall for a man's charms. After barely dodging a sham of a shotgun wedding, marriage is the last thing on Silas's mind. Watching...more

What a fun book! This was the story of Belle Tanner and her daughters, who we first met in 'Montana Rose'. It was also the story of Silas, a would-be cattle rancher who'd been run off of 2 ranches due to some 'unsavoury' situations down in New Mexico.
I really enjoyed the way the story line moved. This book moved at a much faster pace than the first book in the series, which suited the characters and situations just fine. After all, when you're trying to heard 1,000 head of cattle to market in a...more

I am a sucker for a good western romance, but this book is so much more than that! Mary Connealy first introduced Belle to her readers in Montana Rose and I adored her stubborn and witty character from the beginning. This book picks up her story while she is burying her third husband (not quite) six feet under the Husband Tree along with his no good predecessors. Hundreds of miles away Silas is staring down the business end of a rifle...more

I really enjoyed this! I love a good old cowboy romance, well this was that and then some. A whole new take on the idea, in fact. You'll be pleasantly surprised by how honest and real the characters are. No over-the-top drama of people trying to hide their true feelings or impress each other. There is a little of that, some arguments and a little denial, but in an honest, down to earth way. It was a good read that I highly recommend. (Now I need to go out and get the first book. I didn't realize...more

Belle Tanner has been married more times than she cares to remember. So when her latest husband Anthony passes away, she swears off men forever. Unfortunately, she can't do this year's cattle drive with only the help of her hard-working daughters. She needs to find some men to aid them. When she goes into town, she meets Silas Harden, who instantly convinces her he is the help she is looking for. Still wary about all men, Belle tries to keep her distance. And yet Silas is not like the others...

I was a lucky winner of this book on Goodreads. I hadn't read this author and was pleased to dig in and see what I've been missing.

I think the thing that inspired me to keep turning a page was the thought of hitting a spot when it would all come together. Belle Tanner and Silas Harden both came to a disillusioned spot in their lives which left them solid about never getting married again. The attraction and admiration that grew between them bloomed (alas) into love. Towards the end of the book...more

This book tells the story of Belle Tanner. She is a woman running her own ranch with her daughters which is pretty much unheard of back then. She has been married three times before and all her husbands have died and she vows to never marry again. Even though she and her girls work hard to keep the ranch going its hard and when she finds she has more cattle then can survive over the winter she must make a cattle drive before the snow flies. She soon heads to town to look for cow hands....more

I really liked this one. Belle Tanner just barried her third husband under the "Husband Tree." She has forever sworn off lazy men, but she finds she need to make a late cattle drive and will need as many men as she can get to make it work. She ends up hiring Silas Harden who proves that men can actually work, but can they be trusted. There is an immediate attraction between Belle and Silas, but neither one of them wants it. Being stuck together on a lengthy cattle drive only make things tense. W...more

I adored this book, cover to cover! Belle begins her story by throwing dirt onto her third dead husband's face while burying him and berating herself for marrying him. I chuckle as I'm keying this in. There are chuckles all the way through, too. I love when a book can make me laugh out loud or any other visceral reaction. Mary Connealy is one of my new favorite authors, for sure and for certain.

When I was a teenager I envisioned myself as a nurse midwife roaming the Kentucky hills on horseback a...more

Confession time. I was perturbed at Belle when I met her character in Montana Rose, book 1 of the Montana Marriage series. I mean, come on now! Good, honorable guys wanting to be a family man and she was choosing the bums! When that happened, I honestly was a little reluctant to read her story in The Husband Tree and was highly tempted to skip straight to Wildflower Bride, but since I'm a complete sucker for reading a series in order, I gave it a go. Mary Conneally is such a talented, fantastica...more

A riveting and moving experience! Makes you realize how tough things were when this country was being settled & how tough women had to be. How they ever did it I'll never know.

I'd also like to find a man like the one in this story--WOW!!! It reminded me that God has a plan for us, and if we'll just endure the hardships and trials now, he will bless us with a great joy and happiness in the future. I felt hope after reading this book that even though things seem bad right now, the future holds...more

As all my family, friends, and followers know...I've been "im"patiently waiting to get my hands on Mary's newest release, The Husband Tree. Ever since reading Montana Rose (my all-time favorite of Mary's books) I've been eagerly looking forward to reading Belle's story. Well...let me tell you...it was well worth the wait!! I would have read it straight through, but my hubby had to be fed. I could have gladly passed up dinner, just to keep reading!

When we meet back up with Belle Tanner, she's in...more

Mary Connealy rocks the roots of The Husband Tree! She takes humor, wit, hardship, a calloused female rancher, and a good looking cowboy, mixes them all together and whips out a fantastic read. Yep, she's done it again.

Belle Tanner is in a pickle. Just having buried her third "worthless" husband, she needs to get her cattle to market before the snows hit or she will lose it all. She hires Silas Harden, a drifter running from his own problems, and the two, along with her passel of 4 children, go...more

I absolutely loved this book.

We first met Belle Tanner in Montana Rose where she's introduced as a woman who's many (3) husbands have all let her down. While they gave her the children she loves more than life, they also gave her grief and heartache, and left her a widow 3 times over. Naturally she's a bit bitter and feels like she can't ever try again. She's done with marriage!

Enter Silas Harden. He hires on to help Belle and her daughters drive a herd of cattle to market in Helena, MT. Its a...more

It is quite a fact that I have yet to come across a book by Mary Connealy that I did not like. I loved the Lassoed in Texas series and I am enamored with the Montana Marriages series. It is baffling to me how each and every story can grip you further. The catty whit is so amusing and the characters are lovely. The issues dealing with real world problems are incredibly woven in a western historical standpoint and cause a reader to truly think. The growing love between protagonists is breathe taki...more

This was by far the best Connealy book I have read. i usually like her books ok- not completely ecstatic, but not entirely hate either. I have trouble with her quick, too neatly put together endings. I was bracing myself for such an ending and was very surprised that this book actually ended very well. It felt resolved in a very good, pleasant way, and yet it wasn't thrown together. It wasn't forced and seemed the more real.

It's a book about a 30 year-old woman in the mid 1800's who has had a v...more

A wonderful book!! Even if you haven't read book #1, you can still read this one. Of course one piece is left hanging. When's the sequel coming out? The reason I took off 1 star was, actually I would give the book 4.5 stars, because one part was predictable; but I tend to think ahead in books anyway. It was a fantastic story, well written and I couldn't put it down!! Thanks Ms Conneally!

After 3 worthless married and buried husbands Belle is done with men... until she has to push 1000 head of cattle through the roughest of rough terrains. With her hard working daughters and a new hired hand it turns out to be a cattle drive she'll always remember. This is a very predictable and wonderful book. I love the way even her daughters have decided that men are worthless... too funny!

I wrote my first book when I was about twelve. A romance novel. I shudder to think what a twelve year old could know about romance. I have no idea what happened to the manuscript. I suppose my mother found it, and burned it while screaming in horror, but I’ve always been afraid to ask. Was it a hundred pages? Two? I have no idea, but I seem to remember just writing FOREVER! So I’m guessing two pag...more
