I'm not terribly impressed with this one, though I thought for the first 3/4 of the book that I might be. The intriguing theme is marred and tarnished by cheap sentimentalism at the end.
Also, I listened to the audiobook, and though the young reader had developed impressively distinct voices for all the main characters, the determinate nature of those voices actually impeded her delivery of nuances in conversation--and made one of the primary characters seem four or five years younger and much m...more

This amazing book combines elements of magic and mystery, the realities of life and death, and the consequences of choices along with complex characters, plot twists, and a rich setting to tell an unforgettable tale.
After Evie's mom dies, her dad decides he wants a fresh start, so he buys an orchard in New York and they move. It's a great idea since her dad loves trees, but the locals all believe the orchard is cursed. Evie doesn't believe in curses or fairy tales anymore ... but she has a hard...more

Garden variety message-drive fantasy for younger readers, of the sort in which the fantasy elements are merely tools or metaphors for conveying some Wisdom to Grow On about valuing your family (they love you! even if they don't show it and in fact totally neglect you!), living in the real world, not grieving excessively, and those sort of ideas that seem to inhabit Books Where the Mother Dies. Oh, and don't mess around with supernatural crap, it is bad. That attitude and inclusion of homeschooli...more

Evie can't believe it when her father decides to move from Michigan to New York shortly after her mother dies. She is even more angry to find that they have moved into a house next to a dead orchard that her father is trying to bring back to life. Worse yet, there is a cemetery there, too. And it's not her mom's cemetery. The first day they arrive there is a funeral going on for a young boy, Alex. Soon, Evie notices the ghostly shadow of a boy. She gathers up enough courage to start talking to h...more
What a beautiful unsung hero in the YA genre it has everything a ghost story, coming of age, dealing with grief and some fairytale/fantasy/magical realism elements thrown in.

This is the story of a girl whose Mother has died. She seems kind of bitter about her father not being like her mom for much of the book. Anyway, she and her father move into a new place with an orchard full of dead-seeming trees. People say the orchard is cursed. Her father sets out to cultivate it, and bring the trees back to health. She meets a kid who says he's a ghost. He matches the description of a boy who recently died.

A poignant story that follows a girl's journey as she struggles to accept loss. Evie is full of anger when her father uproots her and moves to an apple orchard far away from all the things she loves--including her mother's final resting place. But a strange history, and rumors of a curse, surround the orchard and the girl with her same name that dissapeared decades ago.

I am not one to write long flowery, or deeply in depth book reviews. My desire is simply to say if I liked it or not, and why.
The Garden Of Eve is a beautiful little book that explores life, love, loss, and the power of love to overcome death and disbelief. True the book was written for a middle school audience, but it was mature and quick enough to keep my attention.

I was thoroughly disappointed. The characters weren't well developed and the plot was thin and contrived. It was just too sappy, predictable and had way too many Biblical allusions for me.
"Evies Garten" gehört zu den Büchern, die ich leider erst viel zu spät entdeckt habe. Sehr oft bin ich an dem Buch vorbeigegangen, ohne es zu beachten, von daher ist es schon ärgerlich, dass ich erst jetzt lesen konnte. Definitiv ein schönes Buch, aber leider auch mit Schwächen.

The next time I read this book, I want it to be on a cold, late-fall night. This book sucked me into its atmosphere like few others have managed to, with its shivering cold and withering dead trees. This is a modern day fairy tale if there ever was one, and I mean that in the best way possible; it deals with a very real fear, that of death and loss, and does so in a fresh and original way. I'm familiar with the story of the Garden of Eden, but I didn't catch all of the symbolism, though some of...more

This book was sooooooooo good! I read it in 2 days. The book is mysterious as the ending is so suprising!
New house, new town, and mysterious secrets that everyone is hiding. If you want to keep living don’t speak of Eve. This book is jam-packed with drama, spooks, excitement, love, and mysteries. The Garden of Eve is a highly recommended book. I like this book simply because, after reading it 5 times I still can’t stop reading it. It’s mysterious and creepy. The minute you open this book it seems like you’re in some other universe. The detail and the thought that went into this book it’s definitely...more

Really, I am giving this book 4 and a half stars, but that doesn't seem to be an option. I have been waiting about 2 years to read this book, although it feels like forever and ever. Finally, during my banning of new books, I was able to get it through PaperbackSwap and I am so glad I did. It is a short, simple tale of loss. Evie is a wonderful little girl struggling with the death of her mother and her recent move from Michigan to New York. In her new town she makes wonderful new friends and fi...more
After the recent death of her mother, Evie moves with her father from Michigan to New York. Both family members are suffering, but each copes in their own unique way. Evie's father puts all of his energy into saving and tending their newly acquired apple orchard--an orchard that is dying from a supposed curse. Evie struggles to hold onto the memories of her mother's stories and beliefs in magic.

It had an interesting plot, I was actually quite surprised when I picked it up. It was available at my elementary book fair, and my friend and I had wanted to find a book we could race to finish and talk about after. I really enjoyed the story, which I can still remember after reading over a year ago. It's a great mystery book, as well as a good book for someone taking a break from the big 300+ pages series, because although it's a light read, it has a wonderful plot that draws you in, making it...more

When your 13 yr old daughter says, "Mom, this is the best book EVER!", you get that book and you read it!
I thought this was a nice story about an 11 yr old girl coming to terms with the recent death of her mother, and trying to figure out how she would make her way in the world without her mom. My daughter found the story to be filled with mystery, magic and was even spooked out in some spots.

Kind of a let down...I have only read one other book by K.L Going, Saint Iggy, and I consider it among my top ten favorites. Saint Iggy was a book that was absolutely rich with character detail and successfully made each and every character seem like a real person. After reading Saint Iggy, I was chomping at the bit to read another title by K.L. Going. So when I discovered this book and read the interesting plot description; I was beyond eager to get my hands on it. Yet, to my disappointment; I...more

This story is about accepting death. It is ostensibly a children’s book, but its complex symbolism and glum mood make it a little mature for most kids.
The plot concerns a ten-year-old girl named Eve, who is still reeling from her mother’s recent death. She moves to a new house, which has an orchard of dead trees that her father is trying to bring back to life. Locals say the orchard is cursed because of the late owner—and when Eve meets a boy who claims to be a ghost, she is drawn into the myst...more
Evie reluctantly moves with her widowed father to Beaumont, New York, where he has bought an apple orchard, dismissing rumors that the town is cursed and the trees haven't borne fruit in decades. Evie doesn't believe in things like curses and fairy tales anymore—if fairy tales were real, her mom would still be alive. But odd things happen in Beaumont. Evie meets a boy who claims to be dead and receives a mysterious seed as an eleventh-birthday gift. Once planted, the seed grows into a tree overn...more
For eleven year old Evie, moving with her father from Michigan to New York is torture. Not only is she leaving behind her family and friends and the only life she’s known, but she’s leaving behind her Mom, who died ten months ago from cancer. For Evie, the apple orchard means nothing and her life is devoid of magic because her mom is gone, but with the gift of a seed an adventure blooms. One that may help Evie believe in magic once more.

Reviewing this book is hard because I am not quite sure why exactly I didn't like this book. This book was not what I expected. It was a mix of fantasy and reality and it seemed like Going couldn't decide which way to go. When Evie and Adam go into the alternate world it seems like an awkward break in the story. Although it explains the "curse" of the orchard, I don't know if it worked...maybe because the scenes weren't developed enough for my liking or because of the short time Going focused on...more
I picked this book up after a couple of teens told me they had read it and enjoyed it.
Evie is mourning her mother, who died of cancer not long ago. Her father, too, is in mourning, and their grief has isolated them from each other. Evie's father, an orchard worker, has bought an apple orchard that is regarded as cursed by the people in the town. Evie is not happy at having to leave her Michigan home and is even less happy when she discovers that their new house faces the cemetery. There's a fune...more
