I picked this up on a Tolkien-high, interested in reading the graphic adaptation of the beloved novel it was based on. It had been a while since I read The Hobbit and had quite forgotten a few things, so I figured it was time to dive in.

The biggest problem with this graphic novel is the amount of words per page. Comics almost never have multiple text boxes spread across a page, let alone a full novel's worth. Some pages were littered with these boxes, much to my annoyance. And so More...

As a long time fan of Tolkien since I was a child (having even been a TA in a college-level Tolkien studies class), I'm always interested in how Tolkien is adapted. When I saw this graphic novel edition of the Hobbit, I was very curious as to how the story would play in the medium of the "comic". And I'm actually happy to say that the novel itself comes across really well. The story, characters and plot are all evenly handled. However, a fundmental problem with the medium of comic More...

I remember my father reading this story to me when I was as young as four, and it being one of the pivotal stories I have come back to over and over again in my reading life. I think it is the reason I became so interested in the Sci-Fi & Fantasy genre. Needless to say, I am a big LOTR geek.

It would be life-exploding to illustrate something as back story heavy as the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, but squashed into text bubbles, the illustrated “Hobbit” stays as magical as ever. Published in three volumes in 1989-1990, this version of “The Hobbit” is done in beautiful full-color, and most importantly, has a dragon.

I read the original “Hobbit” sometime in middle school, and it’s a cute introduction to a very adult and confusing Tolkein world. You get a little bit of history More...

An epic story, with cute and colorful drawings about the famous Tolkien hobbit, who finds one of the fabled rings which become an important part of the continuing saga of The Lord of the Rings.

About: Bilbo Baggins is happy with his quiet life in his little cottage when the wizard Gandalf and a group of dwarves invite themselves for tea and drag him along on an incre More...

This is J.R.R. Tolkein's The Hobbit adapted as a graphic novel. Some of the adventures are left out, but a whole lot of the original story remains.
For anyone who still doesn't have a clue what that is, here is my grossly simplistic summary:

It is the story of a Hobbit (simple, comfort seeking short beings with hairy feet) named Bilbo Baggins and how he is taken on countless adventures, where he discovers that his innate goodness and courage will get him through. It is the preq More...

Graphic Novel: Fantasy
Grades 5-12

This adaptation of The Hobbit by Charles Dixon translates wonderfully into a graphic novel. The story follows Biblo Baggins, a quiet hobbit, on a wild adventure. Gandalf recruits Bilbo as a burglar and he is on his way with 13 dwarves to reach the Lonely Mountain. Along the way Bilbo meets elves, goblins, m More...

Tolkien's story of Bilbo Baggins' adventure is not nearly as dark or foreboding as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, so it appeals to, and is appropriate for younger readers. All the same, the dangers of the journey through the Mirkwood and into Smaug's dragon lair are enough to captivate any reader. This illustrated adaptation of The Hobbit presents Bilbo's story in wonderful detail, vivid watercolors and seemingly endless action. Text includes both running narration and a great number of text More...

Bilbo Baggins life is turned upside-down when Gandalf commissions Bilbo and 12 dwarfs to go on an adventure. The Hobbit tells the story of their adventures as they travel to the dragon’s lair determined to regain Thorin’s rightful treasure and restore order to the society. However, dangers await the travelers at every turn and Bilbo must use all his wits if he is going to guide his followers safely to their destination.

Reading The Hobbit as a graphic novel helped to alleviate some o More...

This graphic novel sticks very close to Tolkien's text, even including much of the narration, which is nice, but means it's not really an adaptation, like I was sort of hoping. As it says on the cover, it's "an illustrated edition of the fantasy classic". It took me a little while to get used to the artwork, but I thought lots of it was very well done -- it fits the comic tone of The Hobbit a lot better than Alan Lee's epic artwork, even if I prefer Alan Lee as an artist.

I have never been a JRR Tolkien fan, granted having read little of his work I don't have much to base that on.

A lot of people I know suggested that I read The Hobbit so I picked it up and was pleasantly surprised. It's not often I find a fantasy/adventure book that piques my interests long enough to finish. I admit while reading The Hobbit I wasn't too engrossed - I didn't have that "I can't put this book down" feeling but once I did put it down I had a longing feeling to More...

If you enjoyed the book, this is a lovely, lovely version of the novel! The artwork is well suited to the classic fantasy genre, and the adaptation doesn't seem to lose any of the beauty in the writing. I would highly recommend for adduct and child alike. What a wonderful book!

A very beautiful graphic novel. The artwork in it is superb and compliments the novel nicely. It also looks like the set, prop and graphic designers of the Lord of the Rings film adaptation took much insperation from it, particularly of Hobbiton and Gollum.

Ms. Yohn, my third grade teacher, read this to us and i remember the big hardback edition she owned with beautiful illustrations. I have searched for it but I believe it is out of print. I remember looking foward to that part of everyday. It was the only part of the day she was pleasant to be around. She loved to read and she especially loved this book and made me love it as well. It is wonderful and stuck with me all the way up until the Lord of the Rings movies came out. Then I had to open it More...

A simply lovely book , horrific and delightful in equal measure, the triumph of good over evil and couldn't we all do with a bit more of that?

Definitely one to keep on the shelves and read again, one can see it merely as a children's fairytale or something much more, a book for both children and adults although sadly perhaps often viewed as simply an introduction to Middle Earth and preparation for the "Lord of the Rings".

Simply a great and easy r More...

I had to read this book in 8th grade. It was interesting and a little boring. This book is for those people who like to go into another world, such as fantasies or just mythical creatures. The book is about a hobbit named bilbo who takes an adventure, i can't tell you what kind but along the way he has obstacles that challnge him in many different ways. I recommend this book to someone who would like to learn how to open their mind to new things and brighten their horizon in a way.

I am ashamed to admit this, but will just the same:

It took me 28 years to finally read The Hobbit! Gasp, I know. I figured it was about darn time that I do it, and I am so glad I did! What a fun read. I LOVE the LOTR movies, and always wondered what happened with Bilbo before he found that ring.

It is fun to occasionally escape to fiction novels like this one, in a land of magic and adventure.

This book was a pure delight. I will be reading the next 3 books now!

This book is just awesome!

A full 134 pages of color illustrations means hours of enjoyment. This book takes as long as the original to read--that is, if you get caught up looking at all of the illustrations (which you would).

This is probably one of the best bargains out there, when it comes to books. I would have paid close to $50 for this thing. It was only $15 brand new when I bought it back in 2001.
