A friend of mine, Marguerite, told me that if she’s me she will be running towards home instead of walking in the park while listening to this. I must have done just that if my husband was not walking with me.

The story was very unnerving. Alex Cross was personally involved in a murder case, wherein the victim’s remains were found in trash bags. The controversial part was that some Whitehouse nerves were ticked during his investigations.

I have to praise the plot of this one. It reminded me ...more

James Patterson’s enormously successful Alex Cross series of novels continues with this, his sixteenth. The formula is well known now – a criminal mastermind, usually a serial killer of some form, targets strangers, but once Alex Cross is on their case, the emphasis shifts. I, Alex Cross is no different.

Again, like a number of previous instalments, the involvement Alex has in the case is personal: his niece has been put through a meat grinder, and as Alex digs into her secret life in W...more

I, Alex Cross, is the 15th book in this mystery/crime series by James Patterson. He’s got a number of series out there, most written by other people under his brand name. But the Alex Cross books are what put him on the map. And except for the 14th installment, Cross Country, the Cross books are consistently good–the best books under the Patterson brand.

In this book, Cross is notified that a niece has been murdered. A little investigating shows that she’d been working as a prostitute. ...more

My first ever Alex Cross and I enjoyed it - fast paced and exciting with a murderer you really want to be caught. I loved the wise, wonderful Nana and the third dimension she brings to the detective's character. The twist at the climax reminded me a little of the end of The Final Cut by Michael Dobbs .....

Reasons for not giving a 4th star were (trying to avoid spoilers here):

1. The ending seemed weak - all seems way too quick and easy. Surely in modern America the process...more

James Patterson- I, Alex Cross (Little, Brown and Company 2009) 3 Stars

Alex Cross is a year older and is celebrating his birthday with his family when he is given devastating news. One of his family members has been killed and she is not the only one who has been murdered by Zeus, the rich, sexual predator. Now he must hunt down this psychopath trusting only his friends as no one else seems to be on the level. Money is power and that is something this killer does not lack. Everyone c...more

I, Alex Cross by James Patterson (pp. 400)

One of the better Patterson offerings in the Alex Cross series. From the start a page turner, which is typical for Patterson’s writing style. Here we get, the brutal murder of his estranged niece. Cross takes on the case and runs into a government cover up that goes to the highest levels of the White House.

Of course, you get the gruesome serial killers, the attempts and threats of the Cross family, multiple players who are tryi...more

This is a typical James Patterson novel, which is definitely NOT a bad thing. I enjoyed the rapid-fire pace of the story and how he kept the action moving with short chapters.

And there sure was A LOT of action. Some parts were gross. I mean, really nauseatingly gross. I had to close my eyes and shake off the gruesome murder scenes more than once. In addition, as the story revolved around a sex club, some chapters contained explicit sex. It was essential to the plot and not just there f...more

Alex... and his new beloved Brianna Stone - fellow detective... but primarily his girlfriend (my objection to the story is that they make Stone too female... she gives up her work (not him) to take care of the family in Nana's illness/weakened state... hmmmm)...

Nana has two heartattacks... but doesn't die... and again Alex says that he will find a better balance between work & family.

The famous detective, Dr. Alex Cross, faces a tsunami of combustible elements in this most recent adventure, including:

*A niece is brutally murdered
*White House involvement
*Alex’s grandmother (who raised him and is his confessor) is seriously ill in the hospital
*A sensual playground for the rich and famous
*Female President
*High-level cover-up swallowing everyone in sight
*An engagement ring in the pocket
*Our hero is a marked man of the best at...more

Alex Cross is a well known detective, known for solving difficult cases, but when the phone rings at his birthday party, he finds himself in the midst of his wildest case ever. A case that involves the grisly murder (I'm glad they didn't give more detail than they did) of his estranged niece. The investigation is full of loops and twists and eventually leads him into the highest profile case he's ever had, with ties that see to go all the way to the White House.

This is my first Alex ...more

Patterson redeems himself (OK didn't really have to hes a always a great author, but seriously? Cross Country not so good) With I, Alex Cross.

The real strength of the book isn't the criminal plot, which is largely driven by narrating from the baddies perspective, who seem to be these two nicknames, Zues and Remy, competing for the sickest f*** in America title.

In fact, even thought I gave five stars the criminal plot is actually pretty terrible. A relative we barely kno...more

Chapter 1 of my review of I, Alex Cross

It's been years since I've read any James Patterson. At one point I had gone back to the beginning of the Alex Cross series and read Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls, but just never circled back around to the later entries.

Chapter 2
I liked those books well enough, quite a bit actually, in addition to a couple of JP's older non-series books. As a matter of personal preference I usually put some space between installments of a ...more

Alex Cross is celebrating his birthday with family when he receives a disturbing phone call. His niece has been found brutally murdered. When Alex goes to identify her remains, he’s shocked to learn what’s left of her body. Alex takes this case personally as he tracks down a sadistic and ruthless killer.

Alex Cross, without doubt, is my favorite series. I started reading this series in graduate school and continue to look forward to each November for the latest release. I really like ...more

Patterson seems to be getting his Alex Cross series back on track with his most recent volume. In I, Alex Cross, murder hits home when one of the victims turns out to be Caroline, the 24-year-old daughter of his deceased brother. It quickly becomes clear that Caroline was working as a prostitute at a secret, high-end brothel in the woods of Virginia that provided services for politicians, businesspeople, celebrities and foreign dignitaries of both sexes. It is going to be a difficult case becaus...more

Recommends it for: Anyone who likes a good mystery and has a strong stomach.
Recommended to Richard by: I have tried to read all Mr. Cross' work.
With over 50 titles selling more than 170 million copies that have spent more than 200 weeks on various national bestseller lists, and several motion picture/TV series treatments, Mr. Patterson and his several collaborators know how to write what the public wants.

This is another compelling mystery trying to be solved by Dr. Cross, Washington, DC's famous shrink/detective.

Unfortunately, Alex has lots of very intrusive family problems vying for his time.

The myst...more

A birthday celebration is underway with all of the people that Alex Cross treasures. Alex’s Nana, his children, Damon, Jannie and Ali as well as his friend Sampson and his family. Detective Brianna Stone, Alex’s girl friend, was also present. It is a festive party where the participants feel that nothing could wrong. One phone call ended the festivities. Alex is told that a member of his family is dead.

Caroline Cross is Alex’s niece but has been out of touch with the family f...more

Loved it! I, Alex Cross is Patterson at his best. The pace is fast and there's no lack of action and suspense. This has to be one of the more gruesome Cross books I've read in awhile. The, I guess you'd call, secondary story is great, too. One of my favorite characters is in peril throughout the book, and you're never sure which way it's going to go. This is one of the better Cross stories, IMHO, although, I have to admit, I've not read them all. Any Cross fan won't be able to put this one down....more

I find myself increasingly disappointed in James Patterson. At least, with this book, he actually did the writing (unlike his "Women's Murder Club" series, which now features his name along with the sadly inferior author who is slogging along with the characters).

I have always liked the character of Alex Cross, and this book starts during his birthday celebration. He learns that his niece has been murdered, and he volunteers to participate in the investigation. However, ...more

So, I did it again. I jumped back into an Alex Cross book. It was pretty good. A bit gruesome, but it was fast paced and kept me interested. What didn't work for me? The voice of Alex. It just gets on my nerves. Like he is so self-important and some of his inner dialogue is plain obnoxious. Of course, I still go back and read the books, but that's cuz I am a succccker. A friend and I were discussing this, and I made the statement that it proves to me what a good writer James Patterson is...more

I know, I know....James Patterson. But I needed an audio book that didn't require a lot of brain activity to listen to while doing exercise on the elliptical trainer. I started with Olmstead's "A Far Bright Star" but decided that it required a more thoughtful reading so I put it aside. Alex Cross hasn't changed much since my first reading of him years ago. It starts out feeling just like "Kiss the Girls" since another one of his nieces has something terrible happen to her whi...more

The latest in the Cross series - and the typical Patterson fluff. No thinking involved (ever) in reading these books - with chapters 3 sentences long. Book starts with Cross' niece dead, and a brutal trail of murders tied in. Cross of course takes the case, and successfully juggles the perfect family life, dedication to his craft and gets the help of every agency ever known to man (FBI, DOD, White House). At least (and I don't mean to sound morbid) Nana Mama (who is at least 100 years old and...more

Detective Alex Cross was at home celebrating his birthday with the family when the phone rings. His niece, Carolyn, whom sadly he had not seen in many years, has been found murdered. Alex discovers the call-girl lifestyle Carolyn was living and pieces fall into place...she wasn't the only victim! What starts out as a hunt for Carolyn's murderer quickly turns into a hunt for a serial murderer with assistance from the Secret Service.

What I love about Patterson is ability to balance the...more

James Patterson’s I, Alex Cross is the latest book in the Alex Cross series, and it will shock readers. Cross must face a death in the family, a health crisis with another family member, and a horrific series of murders that involve call girls, an exclusive gentleman’s club, and a wood chipper.

I haven't read any of James Patterson before but I know he is one of the top selling authors around. After this, I wonder why.
The plot moves along mysteriously on its own with little help from Alex Cross. He touches into the improbable and transparent "mystery" as it chugs along.
The mystery moves along with "information" that indicates: a connect to the White House, a retired Secret Service Agent and other huge leaps with no source or attribution. And all the c...more

I needed an audiobook to pass the time on the treadmill and the Patterson genres usually do quite well for that -- and passing the time on airplanes as well. The action moves along at a nice clip. That having been said, there was nothing really new here. It was the usual Patterson drivel. Alex has yet another girlfriend (met in previous Cross offerings). I keep wondering when this one will become alienated by his choice of work.
Others have wrote pretty good synopses, so I will just say tha...more

2.5 stars - very average. JP is getting to be somewhat formulaic. I've commented on past co-authored books that he's oversaturated, putting out too many sub-par "ghost" books where he does a short outline and the co-author writes the rest, and it shows. This one was authored solo by JP, so I expected more, but it didn't have that "edge of your seat" feel to it, at least not for me.

I've enjoyed the standalone authored books by JP, especially the Cross series, but ...more
