It's really not all that "new" anymore, published in 2003. But I would definitely call this book a photography encyclopedia. It has everything you'd ever want to know about photography and more. It's a wonderful resource for tips and strategies on how to set your camera and compose a shot under any type of conditions. It's definitely a more technical book, but has great explanations of photography terms as well as a rather extensive glossary. Beginners can benefit from certain sections in this b ...more

BIG book with lots of information. I've owned it for years but never really opened it. Finally took a scan through it today as i was looking for specifics on portraiture. Love how he's got lighting/studio sketches for photo shoots and results pictures with captions that clearly articulate what the photo is representing. Covers a broad list of topics, from film to composure to lighting. Great refernce guide for any photographers library.

Recommends it for: All beginner photographers
It took me two years to find a decent photography book that would interest me and tech me the basics. I may not have enough time to read it quickly and actually practice photography to the extent I would like, but this book is a keeper. This is probably the only book to be traveling with me wherever I go.

I believe that this is the best book out there about photography as it covers every aspect from aperture to flash usage, from film to digital and is written in a way that even a newbie will understand the concepts.

I read it once but I keep coming back to read some chapters again and again.

It's a reference.

If you know nothing about photography, this is the book you should read, if you know a little, this is a book your should read, if you know a lot, then this would be a good reference.
