A beautiful book to read to little ones (2 - 6 or so) and is dedicated to the cats of the author and illustrator. It's a gem, the sort that has great pictures that yield new details upon every reading. The ending, like that of all great books for kids this age, deals with the best place for sleep. Of course the parent is the one who'll be affected most by that theme of sleep sleep sleep, rather than the child, but one always hopes. The illustrations are delightful, with the minor caveat that Sch...more

Engaging, sweet and simple in its winsome charms, “Cat Dreams” fills its pages with convincingly painted felines and soft pastels, all in the dream of a single calico cat. The large letters and uncomplicated prose leap and cavort on the pages, following the curves of the illustrations. Nothing is difficult to grasp here: we have a typical hedonistic kitty lapping up cream and dreaming of micefall (as opposed to rainfall) in a dog-free world. There is a warm surprise at the end as we get the only...more

This is for a far younger child than Julia. She thought it was cute but she also laughed at me when we opened it. (She said I need to look at the books I get better.) :-)
This is a very simple story about a cat's dream. The child is actually in the dream and the rhyming words carry them along until the end.
I love to leap.
But now I think
I'll go to sleep.

Very, very simple as anyone can see. It is cute with fun illustrations. I would have liked to have it when Julia was a baby - it would have been...more

Sean and I were shopping for a birthday present and we happened to swing by the books section of Toys R Us. It's not a place we normally buy books but there was an autographed picture book by local science fiction author Ursula K Le Guin. That by itself was a win but the fact that it sported a calico cat it became a must have.

Like When Cats Dream, Cat Dreams focuses on what goes on in a cat's head when she curls up for her nap. The calico (who looks a great deal like our own Caligula cat) tired...more

Sadly, this is the ONLY Le Guin I've read, which I found at first to be ironic, then I read this sad little poem coupled with some decent illustration.

Not good. Really BAD poetry in my opinion. I thought, perhaps, that ol' Ursula and I would have SOMETHING in common, both loving kitties, and turns out, I was marginally right. We both attempt to wax poetic about our feline companions, and neither of us seem to succeed.

Nicely designed with easy words, rhyming, in large clear lettering--makes this a good pick for new readers. It's fun to imagine what cats dream about--like a giant catnip tree, the sky raining mice, and all the dogs running away... But I think we all know that if a cat were to rest in a bluejay nest, it would have a gorier ending than this story shows. The sweet pictures will delight young cat lovers.

We've read all of the books in the Catwings series by Ursula K. Le Guin and S.D. Schindler. So when we saw that they collaborated on a picture book, we just had to read it.

This is a very simple, rhyming tale about a cat. The rhyming narrative is extremely short and in a huge font, so the book is probably best for parents reading with younger children or toddlers.

Still, the illustrations are gorgeous and reading this book aloud with our girls gave us an opportunity to reminisce about reading abo...more

This was a great picture book both my 2 year old and 5 year old absolutely loved. It has a great rhythm with predictable rhyming words at the end of each sentence that get the kids involved in the reading. The art was very well done and if I were a cat I think I would dream about those very same things!

Great book for preschoolers and beginning-readers. Short and simple text on each page for those just starting to read. Concept of dreaming is wonderful for this age, too. Imaginative subject and beautiful illustrations.

I have to read anything that Ursula K. Le Guin writes.
Plus the cat looks a lot like our Tafi which gave us almost 15 years of royal and delightful catness in our home. I gave the book as a gift to my wife.

I didn't care much for the text, but I loved the illustrations. I think this could have worked well as a wordless book. Cat lovers young and old will appreciate the calico's dream adventures.

Ursula Le Guin KNOWS cats. Cat Dreams is told by a tuckered out cat, who falls asleep and has wonderful kitty dreams. But most of all, even when she is done with her nap, she wants a lap- now!
Krista the Krazy Kataloguer
This story, told in rhyme, describes what a cat dreams about. You can imagine what that would be--catching mice, climbing trees, chasing after birds and dogs, lapping cream... The text is simple but the illustrations are gorgeous. I especially like the construction of the milk fountain, where milk pours forth from a statue of cats in the middle, and the rim alternates between blocks of marble and inset trays of kibbles. Wonder if I can get me one of those for my cats? One bit of unreality in the...more

simple for toddlers, yet imagination needed to understand dream, so appropriate for preschoolers too. Large pictures carry well. cats, dreams, friends, pets.

Great and celebrated author, great and celebrated illustrator... and the illustrations are terrific and the writing is not great at all.
Dawn
Lovely illustrations, but the text is much too short! I think the average number of words per page is about 6.

Short and sweet verse by Ursula Le Guin, beguiling illsutrations by S. D. Schindler.

Cat takes a nap and has many fanciful feline dreams. A catnip tree. Dogs run away from her. Kibble and cream--mmm!

What I thought: Great! Text reads like poetry. It's like you're in the cat's head. Le Guin did a great job capturing the cat's personality. The illustrations are good. They suit the text perfectly.

Story Time Themes: Cats, Dreams
Hilary
Very simple, rhyming text. "I leap to her lap. I'm sitting on her. I'm singing my song inside of my fur. Purr... purr... purr... purr..." Pictures are quietly appealing, with new details to discover with each reading.

Nice-to-have, but not a must-have.
