No one would call vampire Colin Ames-Beaumont kind, but one would call him unnaturally beautiful. for two centuries his tainted blood has kept himisolated from other vampires, sustained only by his beauty and vanity-bitter comforts, since a curse erased his mirror reflection, replacing it with a terrifying glimpse of Chaos.

Savitri Murray's insatiable curiosity has gotten...more

What can I say? I have a total fan-girl crush on Meljean Brook. She can do no wrong and I will love any book she writes with a fiery passion.

I loved this book, much like I loved Demon Angel & Demon Night. She took a pompous and vain male lead, Colin, and managed to make him warm, witty, self-deprecating but still vain and a tad shallow. He made me laugh.

Savi, I also loved. I completely identified with her. Her curiosity, her forgivness, everything.

Again, I devoured rather then savoured this...more

Second in the Guardians paranormal romance series revolving around the Guardians, beings endowed with angelic powers when that human dies giving his or her life to save another. The couple focus in this story is on Colin Ames-Beaumont and Savitri Murray.

My Take
Brook is good. So far, everything of hers that I've picked up is an excellent read. And she sure has one heck of an imagination! In this particular story, Colin is absolutely fascinated by Savi. There is nothing about her that does not i...more

Although there were some good ideas, the writing style was too hard to understand.

The first three chapters were great. They were about Savi, (a human woman) and a nosferatu (a vampire like creature) on an airplane. There were also a few other interesting thoughts during the book. The ending of the book was creative and satisfying concerning two events: (1) how a demon (the main villain) was killed and (2) what happened with the relationship between Colin and Savi. The plot during the rest of the...more

This book is about a romance between a gorgious vampire, his ego, and the awesomest heroine in history - an Indian (East Indian) computer geek from Berkeley.

Colin, the vampire, is slutty and vain and funny, but also completely self-aware and self-possessed and self-confident. Which is good, because he can't look into a mirror without seeing the Chaos realm (not normal for a vampire), and almost everyone he comes into contact with thinks he's a figment of their imagination or a dream. There's ver...more

A pleasant surprise

After reading The Guardians: Demon Angel (Book 2) (Berkley Sensation), I just couldn't see how Colin could possibly make an appealing hero, he just seemed so shallow and self absorbed. Somehow Meljean Brook manages to pull it off. Savi (Hugh's adopted sister) is the perfect foil for him, she is as brilliant as he is beautiful and the seemingly doomed courtship between them has humor as well as heat. Suprisingly, the reason behind Colin's vanity and the apparent hopelessness...more

Some books are good and make me feel happy (Twilight), some are well written and cause me to feel strong emotions (Time Traveler's Wife) and some are just so good - they are classics I'll read over and over (Dune). And many are so fun to read and down-right sexy (Nalini Singh, Gena Showalter, Larissa Ione... I love paranormal romance). For me, this book is all of those in one. I was just blown away.

Colin and Savi are truly a match made in heaven (or Caelum). Meljean has developed two wonderful...more

Far too much of inner exploitation; Not exploration… I really mean exploitation. The dialog is difficult to follow. The author focuses on the emotional discharge and jumps from dialog to dialog, scene to scene. I guess she knows what’s going on but forgot to tell everyone else. I like the first book of this series and I think she is a gifted writer, but this one lacks and I cannot enjoy it.

When it comes to the characters; I like both and don’t like either. That, I would argue, is weird. Collin...more

And this was the last of the Guardians books that I read (yes, I read them out of order, sue me), and I must say that I feel that I saved the best for last. Loved the characters, the dialogue, the pacing, nothing seemed forced/rushed in the romance like I've noted in a few of the other installments of this series...all in all a very pleasant read.

Unfortunately, probably shouldn't be read before reading Demon Angel or you might be awfully confused and miss a lot of the backstory of the character...more

I'll start off by saying that I absolutely loved this next instalment of the Guardians set. I never thought I'd like Colin as a protagonist, but Brook carries off his viewpoint with style and flair that makes his narcissism and obsession with his own beauty not just not-annoying, but actually funny in a tragic way (possibly because he himself tries so very hard not to take it seriously)

I also loved Savitri as a female lead, with a passion. She's so incredibly competent, and manages to be complex...more

This is book 2 in the Guardian Series. Based on a recommendation from the author, I started reading the Guardian Series with book 3, and read and really enjoyed the series. So I decided to go back, and pick up the back story with book 1 (which is not available on kindle!!!) and book 2. Book 1 was rather long and convoluted, but Demon Moon was very much like the rest of the series, and I really loved it. While you could probably skip book 1 completely, there was actually alot in there that I thou...more

I REALLY enjoy this series. It's definately paranormal romance more than urban fantasy, and if you can get past the convoluted angels/demons/vampires backstory, as well as the historical component in book one, the remaining modern-day installments in the series are really great!

This is the story of unbelievably gorgeous vampire Colin Ames-Beaumont falling in love with human Savitri Murray. There are all kinds of obstacles in their path, and for 95% of the book, their loved is doomed, but somethi...more

olin and Savi's story is good, but I have a special place in my heart for Lilith and Hugh. I still have to pay close attention to understand who is speaking while reading the dialogue, which is a little uncomfortable but managable given how extraordinary the plot and characters are. Both well developed and intricate. I don't know if I'm just slow (doubtful) or if it's just poor editing but each subsequent book is the same in regards to the dialogue. It's written in what I assume is 3rd person (?...more

Demon Moon, the second book in the Guardians series, follows Savitri, a computer hacker and Hugh Castleford's (hero of the first book) surrogate little sister and Colin, a vampire cursed to see into Chaos dimension (instead of his own image) any time he looks into any reflective surface.

I loved this one from the get-go, and once again, the protagonists are complex and strong and fucked up. I especially loved the part where Brook blew up the usual 'noble idiot' cliche so utterly by having Savitr...more

I loved the story line. I love vampires, angels, & demons. This was the best book I have ever read in this genre! Colin was my favorite character, a total smartass. irristable, and sweet as hell! I did not realize that the book was part of a series or not even the first until I had already read half the book which saddened me, but that just means I will rush out to find the others in the series. I found the book by chance, someone misplaced it on a wrong shelf, I am soo glad they did! Meljea...more

It's not you it's me.

One of these days I'm going to completely "get" one of Meljean's books. There's something about her style, I think I'm getting close to pin pointing the issue. She jumps, she writes like she's filming it. It seems like I'm a minute behind the action until the words on the page catch up. If I was watching it on a screen in front of me it'd be fabulous.

Hence, it's not you it's me.

I'm going to keep plugging away at The Guardians series. It is getting better for me, I just nee...more

POC heroine (half-white, half-(East) Indian). Prose good sentence by sentence but needs line-editing for repetition on the paragraph level; author needs to be less heavy-handed on interpreting character for readers, better at conveying background, past, relationships. Indian background not entirely convincing, but then neither was the heroine as survivor of traumatic murders of family, nor her adoptive sibling relationship with another character. Sexually experienced heroine, no apologies, good;...more

This is a fantastic book! I will admit- the rest of the books in the series were o.k in my opinion. I LOVE this couple. The story was new and innovative. The series is very innovative and unique, not my cup of tea, except this book. I also think the last book will be great, I love Michael, and it is his story.

Savi and Colin work as a couple. Colin is vein, narcissistic and completely lovable. His devotion and love of Savi is heartfelt and sweet. Savi is also very unique, clever, brave, smart, an...more

Colin's book in the Guardian's series. After reading Demon Angel I wasn't very excited about picking this one up. Colin was an interesting character in the first novel, but I wasn't very keen on reading his story. However, I've been told a lot that this series needs to be read in order, so I resisted the temptation to skip it. Surprisingly, I ended up loving Colin. He starts off a bit annoying because he's narcissistic and cocky, but over the course of the story you really begin to see how much...more

I hadn't expected to like Demon Moon as much as I did. The hero, Colin, was selfish or at least appeared to be and part of him definitely is self-absorbed, in the beginning often bordering the asshole-area. But his and Savi's relationship was superb, often heartbreakingly so, which made them my favorite couple of the series (I read the first 7 novels already and anxiously await the final installment!) and their book one of my absolute favorites in the series and genre.

Demon Moon was not flawless...more

I liked it :) Really liked Colin. I can't say I was all that enthralled with Savi though... It was difficult to feel much depth to her... Colin it was easier.

That being said, I think the whole climactic anti-climax was a bit dull, but I suppose it was either that or be obvious... I still think obvious would have been more powerful. As it were, the final denouement felt lacking because it just felt like Brook was nonchalantly tying up loose ends.

Nonetheless--very much enjoyed this one :) it was...more

Colin Ames-Beaumont, a two hundred year old nosferatu-born vampire, possesses an otherworldly and angelic beauty that is almost unbearable to look upon. He also exudes skillful yet flagrant charm and a cutting British wit making the combination so intense that Colin can cause even the most straight of men to question their sexuality. But with Colin's beauty also comes a deep streak of vanity that would rival most kings and queens throughout the span of history and a selfishness that knows no bou...more

When an author has the ability to make a reader lose herself in a story and to create characters who are so overwhelming that every word or action has a double meaning, you know you have a winner. And if the reader wants to go back and re-read the story a second time because the characters came alive and the words on the page were lyrical and beautifully written, well, that reader has been lucky enough to have read a masterpiece.

Demon Moon, Meljean Brook's second full-length book, overwhelmed m...more

I really enjoyed Demon Moon and kind of wish Demon Night would hurry up and get in at my library so I can continue with this series. For some reason, reviews are just not happening this week, so normally this would have been a little longer, maybe I’ll expand it later, but either way, Demon Moon was a great read. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good vampire romance.

In reading some other reviews of the book, I wasn't surprised to find criticism of Brook's writing style. World building is of utmost importance in the universe she created, which pulls it away from a standard paranormal romance. Without getting into the plot, I will say that "simple" is not a word that should ever be used to describe her writing. There's an abundance of history and mythology and a reader who isn't focused will find herself rereading passages.

I found that Brook will leave holes...more

Interesting, intelligent characters; even when they did stupid things, it made sense. Complex world building -- less overwhelming than in Demon Angel, but covers enough that I think newcomers to the series would be able to start here. The storyline was engaging, although I agree with other reviewers that there were a few too many redundancies and it seemed a bit overly-long (although at nearly 500 pages, I think my attention span would find almost anything overly-long). The romance was hot and a...more

Not my absolute fave in this series, but certainly up there. Colin is certainly an sort of vain dandy who meets his match, as they say in the lovely, talented and geeky Savi. Or rather, she is not demolished by his pretty face, which is not to say she's unaffected by it! And I loved learning about Colin's angsty past, and witnessing Savi's family bonds with Hugh and her grandmother. Also, witty, teasing, flirtiness FTW!

I had read Meljean Brooks "Iron Duke" and I enjoyed it. So I decide to give her Guardian series a try. I loved the heroine Sai. She's a gadget head with an interesting mind and personality.
Colin was for awhile a bit of a conundrum for me but the more I read the more I wanted to know. I will certainly get the rest of this series and am glad to add Meljean Brook to my list of new favorites. :)

“She trailed after him, admiring the line of his back. He began climbing the stairs, and she sighed with pleasure. Every bit of him was gorgeous. “Do you mind if I objectify you?”
“Please do,” he said over his shoulder. “Particularly my knees, as they are oft-neglected.”
“Maybe if you ever got your pants off, they wouldn’t be.”
“It hardly matters, sweet; once they’ve come off, the attention isn’t likely to center on my absurdly handsome knees.”
