On a tiny island off the west coast of Ireland, the fishermen's hand-made sweaters tell a story. Each is unique ? feelings stitched into rows, memories into patterns. It is here that Rebecca Moray comes to research a book on Irish knitting. With her daughter, Rowan, accompanying her, she hopes to lose herself in the history of the island and forget her own painful past. So...more

"Casting Off" by Nicole Dickson was disappointing. I realized by page 18 that this was a romance;not my favorite genre. But I did like many things about the book. I find myself thinking of this book on different levels days since I read it. Have found myself searching Ravelry for any guernsey designs inspired from this book, none, yet. May knit samples from the stitch descriptions/patterns and put together for a "Casting Off" afghan. Loved that the Aran Islands was one of the main characters of the story. Found the book at CostCo.

Set on an island off Ireland's west coast, it's the story of an Amnerican researcher cominging her studies of the unique "Irish Fisherman's Sweater" stitches, with her own personal need to cast off old burdens. I'll have a greater appreciation of the variety of stitches now. Good story!

This is such a powerful, moving book that I know I will be thinking about for a long while. I'm grateful for the recommendation.
