Kerr's writing is so simple and calm, each time I begin one of her books I wonder why I loved the previous ones so much. And yet by the 3rd page I'm sucked right in, loving it. It's a sign of an excellent writer that even tho it's been more than a year since I read her last one, everything and everyone comes right back to me and it seems I right back in her world and her characters.

The fifteenth book in the *very* long-running Deverry series. Here Katharine Kerr seeks to wrap up those last few plot points and bring the sequence to a resounding end.
Oh dear. I've followed this series faithfully, to the extent of doing a full re-read in preparation of the release of this final book, and I am more than disappointed with the way Kerr has finished things off.

It has been 16 years since I first picked up the first Deverry novel, DaggerSpell, and here in am, 16 years later, about to finish the fifteenth and final one.
Has the journey been worth it? Yes. Was the wait too long? Yes.
I would not recommend anyone starts reading the Deverry cycle unless they intend to read them all, as the macroscopic story is at least as important as the microscopic ones, and as such I am reviewing the books as a set.

Not a bad ending to the series, though not a great one either. First and foremost, I still don't see why Kerr felt the need to introduce an entire new race out of the blue; everything that they were involved with could have been easily handled through previously established plot lines and characters. It's also clear that Kerr was running out of steam while she was writing this last installment, as most of the dialogue is repetitive and predictable and many of the characters lose their distinctiv...more
This was hard to let go, this series I've been reading for over 10 years. I don't want to say I was disappointed, but I feel like my favorite characters didn't get the attention I had wanted them to in these final 4 books. In addition, Ms. Kerr introduced so many new characters and mysteries during this final series; I don't think she answered enough questions and had enough closure. She summed up a few people's lives, but for a complete ending to a series of 15 books?? Too many holes I think ...more
I thought this was a proper end to a series I have held dear for so long. Okay there is that part (flashback) about very early incarnations of Jill and Rhodry which I found a bit boring and slow. But after that the story picks up really good (excuse my somewhat clumsy english). No real warscenes - which I apreciate.
I was saddened to end this series and say good-bye to all the characters. I guess I'll just have to wait until they are born "again"
The final book in a very long series. It had a lot to live up to. While this book does tie up more loose ends then the average series finale, I'm still troubled by a couple of things I don't think were explained. So, I guess if you like some mystery left after a series finale, then this might be an incredible book.
Overall not a lot really happened. There was one interesting flashback in the book. But it was this flashback that I think caused me to have more questions then if it ha...more

It was good to finally get the end of this series after such a long wait, and a lot of the plot threads wrapped up pretty much how I expected they would. There really weren't many surprises, and it's pretty clear that the author herself just wanted it to be over. This is most evident by the actual ending and "Author's Note" after the epilogue. It was pretty disappointing to have read what, 15 novels of this series to get a one-page afterthought to say basically "Oh yeah, you guys ...more
I have read the 15-book series over the past 10 years and while the ending book wasn't necessarily "conclusive" I didn't expect it to be. It's the kind of storyline that could just continue on and on andn on. However, the way in which it "ended" did provide enough satisfying closure. It was a fantastic series, and I look forward to re-reading it as I'm sure there are many parts of the overall story I have forgotten and will enjoy all over again.
Started reading these books when I was about 10 years old (perhaps inappropriately), this is the final volume of a series started 23 years ago. Very momentous, there was satisfying closure and echoes back to many elements built up, but also some annoying absences of explanations for/returns to story elements only recently added, so the ending wasn't as neat and well-rounded as I'd hoped. I wonder if this was the end point devised right at the beginning or something developed much later...23 year...more

This is the end. But I didn't find it all that satisfying. Still well written, just not fully satisfying. I think there were just too many characters and too much going on in the world to tie up every loose end.
I started with Daggerspell from my local library in 1989 and have kept up with it ever since.
I found that those who enjoy the series did so because they were able to navigate the language, geography, history and the reincarnation twists and turns of the characters' life stories. To those I say congratulations for letting your imagination take off and play out such a wonderful piece of work from K. Kerr.

A fitting and heart-warming end to an intricate and elegant series. Deverry has moved me to tears on many an occasion, and restored my faith that the same love (and sorrow) can span many generations, and touch many lives.
A grand conclusion to the Dragon Mage series. Lives past, present and of the future all interwoven throughout the entire series finally come together to reveal the destiny of the races. I for one would love to see another story by Katharine Kerr and to see what the world might look like now that the circle has been broken.
I loved every moment of this story as it unfolded from start to end. A mighty finish with just enough left unsaid to rekindle our imaginations as to what might come next!...more

As a final book in a series I agree with the consensus. Many things that it seemed were being built up into something fizzled out.
Otherwise, for what did get addressed, I'm glad to have resolution for such a long standing series. I've been reading it for more than half of my life.
I'll miss Rhodry and Jill... And to a lesser degree many others.

The ending might be a little rushed, but overall I am very glad I read the entire, long series! It's good to know how things ended with them. Good luck to Katharine Kerr if she decides to write more, as she stated in her afterward.
At last the story is finished. All the strands wove together beautifully. I miss the world already.
I'm so glad the author chose to revisit the start of the series, and to make sure everyone's story was connected and tied together.
I'm so happy!

This was a fitting end to the long running series. I won’t give any spoilers, but it was sad to leave the character after all their reincarnations, loves, losses and lessons.
