This is an immensely enjoyable walking tour of Hadrian's Wall. Davies' tone is informal, almost breezy, and at the same time, erudite and well-informed. He does a superb job of combining several strands into a lively narrative that never failed to delight me. He tells the history of the wall, the history of wall studies, and presents the current state of wall scholarship (as it stood in 1974.)
