No Dawgs Allowed!

A beautiful, driven and successful real estate agent, Charisse Tyson seems to have it all, including a predilection for attracting losers, liars and bums. After spending another New Year's Eve alone, she decides to put her foot down and `just say no to bums' with the help of a magazine article, "Stop Attracting Toxic Men: Five Steps to Unpacking Your Emotional Baggage."

To know where you're going, you have to know where you've been. As part of her bum detox, she revisits her pas...more

As a single woman turning 40 this weekend, winning and reading this First Read felt very timely. I totally understood what the main character, Charisse, was going through as so much of what she said seemed SO familiar. That said, this is not a self-help book. This is a story told with humor (some parts you can't help but laugh out loud) and even though the ending is just a tad too perfect, it feels right. If you're looking for a light read with a happy ending, then this is for you.

Bum Magnet by K. L. Brady is a humorous yet honest novel about one woman's journey to understanding her laundry list of bad relationships. A recent break-up, a magazine article, and a New Year's resolution, leads Charisse Tyson "back down memory lane," examining the underlying lesson she seemed to miss after each failed relationship. Is every man a dog, is Charisse just a bum magnet, or is life, love, and fate lining up to reveal to her the bittersweet truth that can forever change her world? Yo...more

The Bum Magnet wasn't exactly what I expected, even by the title. To be honest the title was part of the reason I was reluctant to purchase it. I'm not into male bashing, but it was nothing like that. This was a story of self-reflection and growth.

Charisse Tyson has it going on, successful career, good looks, nice home and car, but she keeps attracting the same flawed guy. They all seem to have an agenda, but she is nobody's dummy and I love how she gets them all back. Although the story was ent...more

I know EXACTLY how Charisse feels. Yep. I'm a bum magnet myself. I've ALWAYS attracted the WRONG kind of guys. Could be why I'm divorced and a single mom of 2 boys. But, I wouldn't trade my bum magnet problem for the world, because I wouldn't have my amazing boys if I didn't. So, when I read the synopsis of K.L. Brady's book, I jumped on it. It would be a book that I could totally connect with. I wasn't wrong! I loved every single word and laughter of this story. K.L. Brady knocked a home run wi...more

The Bum Magnet by K. L. Brady

Never in all my years of reading, have I read a book that made me laugh out loud as many times as THE BUM MAGNET. My kids were looking at me like I was crazy but I couldn't help it. (Birth control pajamas - just about all of us have a pair of them.)

Charisse Tyson has a successful career, a beautiful home and a bad-ass ride. On the outside looking in, she appears to have everything - everything but love. Meeting men isn't a problem for someone as charismatic as Char...more

Charisse in the Bum Magnet holds too much attitude in the beginning, and her attempts at humor backfired. She comes across like she wanted me to love her and find her funny. But she adopts a more light-handed tone.

After taking a magazine quiz, Charisse decides to forgo romance until she figures herself out and why she keeps falling for bums, but that resolution only lasts about a day. She meets another hottie, old flames return, a mysterious stranger keeps popping up and that's where chaos ensue...more

I'm a book club member and I received an email from Ms. Brady about her Q&A which is what brought me to Goodreads.

I read this book and absolutely loved it!! It was so funny. I've read books by a variety of "chick lit" authors and I can truly say that I did not laugh out loud at books by bestselling authors like Sophie Kinsella or Jennifer Weiner or Terry McMillan like I laughed out loud with this book. Maybe Bridget Jones Diary made me laugh as much. Maybe. This author has her finger on the...more

Have you ever wondered why you attract a certain type of guy over and over. Is this guy deceitful, a cheater, an emotion toyer? Well, maybe you're a bum magnet. K.L. Brady has written an exciting, funny, witty novel about the pitfalls of dating and expectations. Charisse Tyson is a highly successful real estate agent who after some research through a magazine article finds out that she is a bum magnet. Through journal entries, we get a glimpse of her past dating life and the type of men that she...more

By the description of this book I had a good feeling that it would be a bit smarter and more entertaining than most chick-lit, but I still couldn’t shake the chick-lit stigma I was putting on it. Upon actually reading the book I found I was right and very wrong. The book wasn’t just smart and entertaining, but it also surpassed the genre of chick-lit.

The main character is nothing like me; our ages are distant, our economic status is distant (she’s a professional and I’m...not), she is jaded when...more

Charisse is all business…at first. She lets her heart get in the way of her mind and makes that fatal mistake a lot of us make by ignoring that gut feeling. When you’ve been hurt as many times as she has, it’s easy to see why she’s closed off despite her best efforts…but she doesn’t give up. That’s the important part. She’s a strong character and there for h...more

Beware of the Dawgs!

Charisse Tyson, for all outside appearances, has it going on. She's a successful real estate agent with the BMW 760 and mansion on the hill to show for it. The laws of attraction have her size 14 curves beckoning to most men that she encounters. But, Charisse will be the first to tell you that seductive curves, a hot car, and successful career aren't everything they're cracked up to be when you don't have anyone to share it with; well anyone other than lying, cheating dawgs....more

This has been on my Kindle for quite a long time. I am trying to read all the books I already own before buying any more. I felt very sorry for the main character and all the 'men' she dated. The men were complete Bums but she was not much better. She made terrible choices and was not exactly Snow White herself. There were lines that made me laugh and there was one part about women wanting equality that was VERY well written that made me reread it a few times. However, all in all it was just a b...more

Okay, I just fell in LOVE with Charisse. Didn't care for the beginning, but I just kept reading, and I gotta tell you, this is such a funny book full of funny one liners. I know that previously I said that the 40 year old Ebonics bugged me, but I really got into it.

Man... my heart completely fell when Charisse met Dwayne (and her "ho moment" ultimate lol). I thought she was too new out of the previous relationship with that jerk Marcus. (...crap. I grabbed the book to look for a quote, and I ca...more

Ladies, ladies, ladies...don't walk, RUN to get your copy of this book!

K. L. Brady's "The Bum Magnet" was February 2010 book of the month for Uptown Girls Harlem Book Club. Now, when it comes to literature, we can be quite a blood-thirsty group! We disect each page with a fine tooth comb. After close and careful examination the unanimous consensus is that this book is FABULOUS.

There were just so many things that happened to Charisse that a woman who is written as so intelligent, wouldnt seem to continue making the same mistakes in choosing men over and over again, the title of the book certainly fits because every man she was with was certainly a bum. Charisse was so smarting but so dumb at the same time. She saw the writing on the wall with all of her men, but stayed involved with them despite the truth being right in her face. The story was interesting and kept me e...more

K.L. Brady's The Bum Magnet is local chicklit for Washington, D.C., residents and stars the bum magnet herself, Charisse. She's a real estate agent with a serial dating problem, always seeming to attract the wrong kind of man and hanging onto them. Dwayne, Lamar, Sean, and Marcus are just some of the bums in this book, but are they all bums? That's what Charisse has to figure out, if she can get past her own hangups.

Charisse Tyson calls herself a bum magnet, because that's all she's seemed to be able to attract-bums. Throughout this funny and engaging read, we find out about all the bums Charisse has had to deal with--the playa playa who secretly had eight kids, the pretty boy with a wife on the side, and the deadbeat who made out with another woman in Charisse's car while she was out watching his kids. Now she meets a new guy named Dwayne, and wonders if her bum magnet curse will finally be broken.

Overall this book was a good quick read. I could see myself in Charisse so much. Not that I may have always attracted bums, but I definitely had myself guarded so that I was ready for the hurt before I could get hurt.

Charisse has been attracting bums her whole life. The lying cheating kind, not the ones on the street. As a real estate agent it's easy for her to meet good looking men all the time, but quality isn't really there. When she finally is able to let go of events in her past, she is abl...more

The Bum Magnet is entertaining, engaging, insightful, fast-paced, witty and relatable. It is relatable for both the serial dater and otherwise. I found myself going through the emotional roller-coaster with the main character Rissey (Charisse). It is a novel that touches on our insecurities, failures, the perils of dating in today's world, self worth, self esteem, confidence, faith, hope, the bonds of friendship, family, life lessons and so much more. It addresses much of the same issues that ar...more

A hilarious tells it like it is story that is sure to have you flipping the pages like you need another does of the good stuff. This novel by KL Brady screams perfection. Nothing was missed in this book as you follow the life of Charisse who some how seems to attract the wrong kind of man hence the name BUM. When a new year hits she wants to make a change. She wants to start over and perhaps find that true someone. This task wasn't easy and as she tended to still make the same mistakes over and...more

Let me start this review by saying it has been quite a while that I have laughed so much while reading a book as I did with The Bum Magnet by K.L. Brady. Charisse is like most women I know including myself. She has dated bum after bum after bum in hopes of finding the right man. Charisse is a professional woman who has already went through one divorce and can’t seem to find a man that is truthful, faithful, or even really available.

In my opinion what made The Bum Magnet quite entertaining and m...more

The Bum Magnetby K. L. Brady strolled into my library via one of my co-workers, while I was in the hospital. I normally do not read fiction books, especially romance fiction. I often tease one of my Twitter pals about having a crazy magnet. And just like crazy people are attracted to her, bums seem to be attracted to Charisse Tyson. Reeling from the broke heart Marcus "the cheater" Matthews left her with, she's gone on a self-proclaimed man hiatus.

When the handsome Dwayne Gibson becomes a client, Charisse is determined to keep it professional. That's easier said than done and she finds herself falling for him. As their relationship progresses, Charisse reflects on he...more

It took me a long time to read this book. I have a "bad habit" of reading many books at the same time and switching back and forth depending on how I'm feeling at the moment. Women may appreciate the book more than men. For the first 2/3 of the book, it was painful for me to watch Charisse, the main character, make the same mistakes over and over again. It could have been monotonous, if it wasn't for Brady's great sense of humor. She had me laughing out loud many times. For example, here's a quo...more

If you are looking for a shallow, easy read, The Bum Magnet, by K.L. Brady is not that book. The main character, Cherisse, is a mirror for every woman that craved the companionship of a man but was clueless about loving and trusting herself. Her story is written with humor and compassion and as a reader I was in her corner. And while I wanted to shake her a few times, it was all worth it. I can't remember, in all my years of reading Chick Lit, being more relieved to get to a happy ending. Brava,...more

Talk about unlucky in love! Charisse is the poster child for it. The book was funny and had me laughing out loud in certain parts. This is a chick-lit story with an HFN ending. Interestingly enough, the man she ends up with is not someone she spent a lot of time with. Looking forward to reading the second book and getting to know the hero more. Looks like there's more drama, and hopefully, more laughs.

I don't usually go for "chick lit" but this was a fast paced, entertaining read that strikes of realism. Charisse goes through her journey and learns her life lessons one chapter at a time, often making the reader laugh or feel sorry with her along the way. Formatting errors and constant typos distracted from this being an otherwise great read, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Great characters, super funny, the perfect beach/pool read.

There were some plotting/pacing issues, and I felt that some of the endings weren't earned and felt rushed, plus it got a little preachy at the end, which is why it's three stars instead of four.

That said, I was totally into the story and wanted to know what would happen.
