This book was ridiculous and silly and absurd. And nothing happened. Nothing. It was bad fluff from start to finish. But I didn’t hate it. And decided to give it an extra star because Eloisa James is funny.

I read this book during a self-imposed week of “NO INTERNET” so was unable to do any preliminary research about this book before reading it. All I had to go on was the book itself, which provided very little help in that area: Is it part of a series? (Yes.) Are there any recycled characters?...more

There's so much wrong with this book that I don't know where to start. It's the third Eloisa James I've read, and it is also without doubt the last. She's lost me for good with Fool for Love.

- Darby is a thinly drawn hero. He looks like Johnny Depp and he likes lace and that's pretty much all that James has to say about him.

- Henrietta starts off charming but turns into a shrewish stick in the mud. Early in the book she's very understanding and mature, but once she gets it into her head that i...more There's so much wrong with this book that I don't know where to start. - Darby is a thinly drawn hero. He looks like Johnny Depp and he likes lace and that's pretty much all that James has to say about him.

- Henrietta starts off charming but turns into a shrewish stick in the mud. Early in the book she's very understanding and mature, but once she gets it into her head that it's time to start impressing Simon's friends, or London in general, everything she says is catty catty catty. She became in the blink of an eye a truly despicable, moralizing faux-sophisticate. Especially all of the insulting comments she directs towards Darby's best friend, which James tries to pass off as "wit" but are anything but.

- Henrietta's devotion to the children overwhelms the romance. This, too, steers the novel in the direction of obnoxious moralizing. I should have guessed what was going on when Darby sees Henrietta covered in VOMIT and thinks about how the sticky liquid molds her dress to her figure and is really turned on. I know that romance novels are frequently unrealistic, but that made me feel queasy. By the end of the novel, Henrietta's major selling point as a heroine is her endless self-sacrifice for babies.

- The Esme subplot was similarly irritating. Esme is pregnant, she feels fat and ugly, and so the knight in shining armor rides in on his white horse...in order to assure her that pregnancy hasn't made her ugly and go gaga over the miracle of life.

I know that there is a whole sub-genre of Romance that is about men who just can't get enough of domestic pleasures, pie-baking and cozy nights by the fire and apparently vomit and pregnant women. However, that sub-genre is not Regency and I was really unhappy to find it sneaking in here.

I've come to the conclusion that James' schtick is to take these supposedly "free" or "scandalous" women and recoup them one by one into staid, rule-obeying, traditional and unremarkable mommies. She kills their fire and personality. I, for one, think it's truly awful.(less)

Sementara itu Simon, keponakan Esme dari suaminya yang telah meninggal, Miles, datang berkunjung ke rumah Esme untuk memastikan siapa sebenarnya ayah dari bayi yang dikandung Esme saat ini. Kelahiran seorang putera tentu saja mengacam kedudukan Simon sebagai pewaris setelah kematian Miles. Simon bertemu dengan Henrietta tanpa sengaja saat wanita itu harus menghadapi Josie dan Annabel kecil yang kabur dari penginapan setelah ditinggalkan begitu saja oleh pengasuhnya.

Cerita kemudian berlanjut dengan pertemuan kedua, ketiga, dan seterusnya antara Henrietta dan Simon di rumah keluarga Rawlings dengan Esme yang berusaha menjodohkan keduanya. Walaupun keduanya seringkali melawan kenyataan kalau mereka saling tertarik, namun takdir berkata lain. Simon sendiri awalnya sudah melamar Henrietta, namun setelah tahu bahwa dia tidak bisa memiliki wanita itu secara utuh, dia membatalkan lamarannya. Hal ini sempat menjadi konflik sebelum akhirnya Henrietta dengan bantuan Esme menjebak Simon untuk menikahinya dan mendapat solusi atas permasalahan tersebut.

Cerita tentang Esme dan Sebastian sendiri menjadi bumbu sampingan cerita ini, sehingga dapat dikatakan di dalam buku ini terdapat dua cerita seperti halnya buku pertama dimana skandal keduanya terjadi pertama kali. Kehadiran kedua adik tiri Simon, Josie dan Annabel memberi warna tersendiri selain konflik di bagian akhir buku yang selesai cukup cepat dan tidak bertele-tele

Buku ini terbilang cukup menghibur untuk para pencinta historical romance walaupun bukan favoritku :P

Henrietta is a delightful heroine, despite the fact that she is ignorant about matters of making babies. Considering her particular circumstances, and the fact that she is naturally intelligent (helping prepare the school's lessons for the week, etc), I thought she would be the type to find out everything she could about makin' babies and having them, but she stuck to raising them. That was one thing that didn't quite click with me.

Despite all that, I thought Simon and Henrietta were delightful together. Simon is mysterious, full of mischief, and obviously admirable of Henrietta's intelligence. One of the many things I loved about this novel is it was about these two people finding their way to love - no super-sekrit plot, no ex jumping from the shadows. They were very sweet together, and together the two of them have to overcome Henrietta's fears about having children.

Their dialogue is quick and clever, and is the best kind of foreplay! Simon is obviously smitten with Henrietta's intelligent banter, and he never questions it. Henrietta enjoys making him react, and so is encouraged to speak her mind - something I definitely appreciate.

Because this one was so sweet, and I almost never felt any actual danger for either of them, it was an easy read and warmed me down to the tips of my toes. I will definitely re-read this one, especially when I need to connect to a couple that so obviously fits well together.(less)

Another so-so book from James. Admittedly, her so-so books are still hard to put down and fun reads.

So, this book is book 2 of the Duchess quartet. Only pregnant Esme from Duchess in Love really makes an appearance, and while her situation is a little complicated if you haven't read the first book, James does explain it several times, so this book could be standalone.

I wasn't certain I would like this book from its description. I was pleased to find Esme and Sebastian in the story -- and sorry that the description didn't include at least a mention of them.

Simon is all that we'd expect in a Regency romance hero -- titled, arrogant, passionate, and a good guy behind the rake mask. Henrietta is what we'd expect of a Regency romance heroine -- beautiful without realizing it, witty, intelligent, and outspoken. But Henrietta is also what we don't expect -- she's lame in one hip, which means she'll never bear children. What she doesn't realize is that the general consensus is that her infirmity also means she cannot perform her marital duties, and since those lead to childbearing, Henrietta shouldn't be married at all.

Simon and Henrietta learn this cold fact in a sobering way. Simon has uncovered the passionate side of Henrietta and can't contemplate a marriage to her without consummation. Henrietta is naive enough to think that they can live as most of the ton do -- Simon will take a mistress to take care of his "baser" needs, and she and Simon can live comfortably in a companionable marriage. When she realizes this can't be, Esme comes to the rescue.

Esme tells Henrietta about a form of birth control in that day -- a sheath. No, not what you think, it's more like a diaphragm that's soaked in vinegar before being inserted. And since Esme believes that Simon and Henrietta are perfect for one another, she also arranges for Henrietta to be compromised so that Simon must marry her. Simon has already gone to Henrietta's step-mother to ask permission to marry her; that's when the harsh reality of her infirmity was made perfectly clear to him. So Esme decides that the love letter that Henrietta wrote to herself (supposedly from Simon) is just the thing to spring the trap at an at-home dinner party.

Once Henrietta and Simon are married, Henrietta can't imagine what the horrid fuss was about marital duties; she finds them quite enjoyable. Until she discovers that she's pregnant. Now what? Simon won't risk losing her. As much as she wants the child, she has to think about Josie and Anabel, who now look to Henrietta as their mother.

I did enjoy this book immensely. It surprises me, a little, because authors like Eloisa James follow the formula perfectly and still manage to create new stories, new situations, and new characters that pull the readers in! I loved that Simon was so protective of Henrietta! I loved the interchange between the two of them, when he's trying to get a reaction from her, and she remains completely calm. But when he kisses her... they both lose themselves to that moment.

Well done, enjoyable book. I just wish, as I've said, that we had more resolution with Esme and Sebastian. They made this book for me, too. I like the changes in Sebastian. And while I fear that unless Esme has a girl there's no hope for their love, I can't wait to find out more!(less)

Enjoyed this, as I do all of EJ's books.

Have to say, the one thing that I found jarring in this book was the POV switches. Normally that doesn't bother me at all (in fact, I rather like it) but especially in the first chapter I found myself confused by the head-hopping.

Henrietta has never had a London season, and believes she can never have children because of a deformity in her hip. However, she still thinks she can get married...hasn't quite figured out the connection between sex and conceptio...more

This is the second book in the series. I read it as a Kindle ebook from my local library.

Moderately predictable (I mean, it's kind of a given in a romance that if they say something bad will happen if this occurs, well, there you go), but it's good to see some old friends and meet some new ones.

I enjoyed the characters and the plot. James' characters are very flawed and the situations they are in are less than ideal. I really like this one, the first in the series was a bit dramatic but had one of my favorite background characters : Lady Esme Rawlings. She so devilishly blunt and witty that I was happy to see her again. And Lady Henrietta was sharp tongue and quick with her witty comebacks that you hardly saw it coming.

What I'm enjoying the most about this series so far and this book in particular, beyond the intelligent dialogue I expect from James, is that the important events happen in the right order for the time period and then they go beyond just the wedding and bedding. While it wasn't unexpected that she went where she did with the story, I loved the depth of emotion expressed by Darby. I'm also really enjoying the subplot of Esme and Sebastian. I liked this one better than the first volume in the series. Henrietta is an interesting heroine (what with the bad hip and stuffed full of rather awful notions about only being a woman if you have children) and Simon an unexpected hero (rather than rescuing his love from Something Bad he merely has to battle her well-meaning step-mother and find a good OB).

Once again a book that started out very promising and then just kind of fizzles. The hero has my second favorite name for a hero, Simon. He is fun, intelligent and very smartly dressed. She is sweet, kind and to tell you the truth pretty boring, and as the book progresses she becomes more so. Therefore I can only give it a 3 start rating.

This is the first Eloisa James book I have read. There's a secondary couple in the book that of Sebastian & Esme which the author choses not to finish in this book but to do it in the next book of the series. Sadly, this is disappointing for me. As of now I couldn't grasp why the author has introduced the secondary couple into this book & I would even say that they took up almost half the story, only not to finish it. I'm sure it is to signal the reader to continue to read the next book....more

I liked it alright. But it really doesn't make me want to read the rest of the series. Esme is 6 months pregnant when the story starts. Henriette gets married and has a child, but after Esme is a part of the story from the beginning, there is no mention of when she does have the baby. Yes, I understand that it will probably be addressed in the next book. I would have liked to know if the child was the Marquess' or her husbands and if Simon ended up being the heir or not. Yet, not enough to bothe...more

I 'm not sure if the Desperate duchess precedes this duchess series, but I wasn't that impressed. Henrietta meets a duke and falls in love. She has never had a beau and writes a love letter to herself from him to amuse herself. She later "traps" Simon Darby, with the help of a friend, when someone the letter becomes public. There is another story, with a character similar to Gemma from the Desperate Duchess series. I will try the next book, but I wouldn't reread it and that is how I differentiat...more

I really enjoyed reading this book, especially the intense interactions between Esme and Sebastian - pure bliss for the reader (their story is the one that starts in the first book of this quartet and comes to completion in the third book). Henrietta and Darby are a terrific couple as well, and there is tons of humour in the book - I was smiling or chuckling through most of it. Awal nya sempat skeptis baca buku E.J yg satu ini, karena yg sebelum nya cukup membosankan...tapi ternyata sampai halaman 150 ceritanya lumayan asik dan dialog2 nya lucu.

Terpaksa mengasuh kedua adik tirinya yg lucu2 Annabel dan Josie , Darby bermaksud mencari istri yg juga bisa memberikan pewaris, hingga warisannya tidak hilang. Namun Esme yg menyukai Henrietta, berusaha menjodohkan mereka berdua.

Keluar lah cara2 licik yg biasa di kalangan ninggrat Inggris, yaitu memancing Simon utk menikahi Henrietta. Di saat makan malam, muncul lah surat yg seolah2 di tulis Henrietta yg akhirnya, untuk tdk menimbulkan skandal dan mencemarkan nama baik Henrietta, menikahlah mereka......Namun Darby tidak tahu kalau ini muslihat yg di atur Esme dan Henrietta serta teman2 nya.

SementaraSebastian yg menyamar jd tukang kebun di rmh Esme, sdh "terhubung" lagi dengan Esme , makin hot lah hubungan mereka....
Ternyata cinta Esme dan Sebastian juga di ceritakan disini..lucu dan mengharukan waktu Sebastian menyamar jd tukang kebun hanya agar bisa dekat dengan Esme....

Kesalah pahaman dalam perkawinan Darby dan henrietta akhirnya bisa di selesai kan dg campr tangan semua orang termasuk Josie dan Anabel, adik tiri Darby yg memanggil Henrietta (yg suka anak2) dg "mama"....

Walau pun di vonis tidak bisa memiliki anak, akhirnya Henrietta dan darby memiliki pewaris mereka sendiri (dengan Darby yg panik setengah mati wkt Henrietta melahirkan)

Ending nya so sweet, cerita nya enak di baca dan sungguh tidak membusankan...Esme yg di buku 1 di anggap slut, ternyata berperan banyak dalam bersatu nya Henrietta dan Darby.......
Dialog2 nya sungguh segar dan bikin ketawa2 sendiri...salut buat buku E.J yg satu ini

When, goodreads, when will you allow us to award fractions of stars? Not everything I read fits into your rigid scale and this book is a good example of such. As usual, I rounded up though this was more of a 3.5 in my opinion.

There were times when I wanted to abandon this story and really could not remember why I put Ms. James and this series on my TBR list. However, I stuck with it and finally was reminded of the reason I enjoy her writing. Some aspects of this story I found downright foolish,...more

Shelves: audiobook, books-read-in-2012, historical-romance

Fool for Love by Eloisa James. Started audiobook 6/11/12. Switched to ebook 7/11/12. I switched to the printed version of this book because there was a secondary storyline that had nothing to do with the main romance and which I was not interested in at all. For some reason, James's usually tight POV is absent here, with scenes (and backstory) from random minor characters--including a newborn baby in the last chapter! I'm now 1 for 4 with James's full-length novels.
