Evan
Harkness does something similar to what Michael Gebert did with his "Encyclopedia of Movie Awards": year-by-year awards listings with selected commentary. But this one focuses on the AA's alone, in great comprehensive detail. Harkness provides pithy contextual essays that round up the major issues of each Oscar year. Perhaps not an essential reference, but well enough done.

I have this book near me every year the Oscars come on (I've kept ballots past '97 folded up and shoved in it too)!
