In Alyson Noel’s latest installment of ‘The Immortals’ series, Shadowland, Ever and her true love Damen are faced with one huge problem: They can’t touch each other or Damen will die.

Intriguing, no?

Oh but wait, Damen pretty much clears up the whole issue at the beginning of the book by putting up some kind of shield so that they can touch, but anything that gets real sexual is out of the question. Wait? Is this book all about sex now?

Noel brings back the same characters that have been in previous installments – Haven, Miles, Roman, the creepy twins – and we have one new character, Jude. Much like how Damen sought after Ever throughout all of her past lives, she finds out that in each of these lives there is always Jude – or a past life of Jude. The question is: Is Damen’s latest troubles the result of him interfering with what could have been true love between Ever and Jude? Is his lavish lifestyle to blame? Is karma playing a role?

While Ever tries to understand that issue, she’s also trying to find the antidote to the antidote, which means she has to find a way to get it from Roman who has always been less-than cooperative. Ultimately though, Ever blames herself for what happened, and Damen blames himself for what happened and they both work separately, rather than together, to find the solution. In my opinion, if they were soul mates, wouldn’t they want to work together?

As in Blue Moon, the twins are also involved with finding the solution. After Ever doesn’t take their advice in Blue Moon, she continues to not take their advice in Shadowland, ultimately leading to her having to choose between Haven’s life and the touch of Damen. One would think that Ever would have learned from her mistakes, but Noel seems to have it mapped out that Ever will make the same mistakes over and over again. The twins warned Ever that something was going to happen and she remained too wrapped up in herself to take note.

One of the great things about this book is the relationship between Sabine and Mr. Munoz – one of Ever’s teachers. It provides humor and warmth and I was very happy to see Sabine happy. Noel also enforces the idea of friendship and helping the ones you love to no end. Even the twins are starting to form a friendship with Ever and it was nice to see that happen.

One big problem with Shadowland is that it ends without an explanation about Jude, or Haven’s opinion about her current state. And what’s happening with Honor? The antidote to the antidote is never claimed and the reader is left hanging. Personally, I was getting very annoyed with Damen’s attitude and kind of hoped for a change – specifically for Ever and Jude to hook up. Jude seemed so down to earth and real and Ever had real sparks flying with him. Damen seemed too involved with material things and was just too serious all the time – he definitely lost his charm in this book. It would have been nice for Ever to have a happy ever after with Jude.

While the issue of “the Shadowland” is brought up – i.e. a place where immortals go when they cease being immortal – it isn’t touched upon at all for the rest of the book. I’m curious why the book was even named Shadowland if it’s just a general concept that was introduced and not a major part of the outcome. Other things that bothered me was the emphasis on the tulips. We get it – tulips mean eternal love, which is what Damen and Ever supposedly have. It seems like every time I turned the page, one of them was sending a red tulip as an apology. Whatever happened to words? Enough with the tulips already!

Apparently the next installment, Dark Flame will be released in July 2010. Here’s hoping that there Noel provides some explanation about all the issues she left untouched. Personally, I would call it quits on this series, but I really want Jude and Ever to be together. I really think there’s something there.

What a waste of time. I spent the whole book waiting for something to happen and I don't feel like anything ever did. I'm sorry, I just cannot believe Ever and Damen's connection and neither could I believe the connection with Jude. Roman doesn't even seem sinister to me anymore. I loved Evermore because I found Ever to be such a great character and I really liked her, but now she's just annoying. I can understood wanting to save your best friend in normal cases, such as not knowing about the afterlife and what happens to people when they die, but Ever knew everything about that. She knew about Summerland and what a great place it was. She knew dying was merely the beginning of a totally new and eternally happy life in another realm. She also knew that by "saving" Haven, she was condemning her soul to the Shadowland if she was ever killed later in life. Stupid. Selfish. And not to sound mean or anything, but I would have preferred that Ever let Haven die not just because it would have been the right thing to do but because Haven is one of the most annoying characters in this series and I would have been glad to be rid of her. However, now that she is an immortal, I expect she's going to play an even bigger part in the rest of the books (and according to the summary of Dark Flame, she will be more annoying and selfish than usual). Bah!!

I believe that this is going to be a common occurence in this series-Ever making a stupid,impulsive decision and making everything worse. This only makes the story more annoying (I know I've been using this word a lot, but it really sums up how this series makes me feel) as well as boring and predictable now, so I'm officially done reading this series. Maybe I would have continued if there was just one more book left (like I originally thought) and quickly end the series, but I recently found out that there's at least three more books. Nuh-uh. No way. I'm not going to waste my time.

I would have given this book 1 star (or even zero) if it weren't for Jude and the twins. I loved those three characters, but they were the only good part of this book.(less)

I have very mixed thoughts about this book. It was hard to put down once you have started it, but once it is finished it doesn't leave you fully satisfied.

I wish I could teleport myself into Shadowland and try and shake some sense into Ever. Every time she tries to help she just ends up making things ten times worse. But I figured that I had no right to complain about this book when I hadn't read it myself and was basing my opinion on someone elses.' My school library only had Shadowland. Luckily I read spoilers, so I pretty much understood what was going on. It was time for me to see whether the book would be as awful as the vlogger said or wonderful as my friend said. I side with the vlogger. This book sucks. I wish I could make a funny simile stating how much this book sucks, but I can't. It plain sucks. There are two things that really irk me about this book. But first I wanted to address a little pet peeve. I hate the grammar in this book. It seems fragmented and out of place. Now to my main grievances.
1. The plot. Where the fuck is it? The summary says that a curse has fallen on Damen and now he and Ever must race to find the antidote. In the second book a rogue Immortal called Roman poisoned Damen and tricked Ever into mixing her blood into it. She and Damen can't touch now. If they do, Damen will be sent to the Shadowland, which I suppose is the Immortal version of hell. For at least 200 pages the plot is nothing but Ever trying to find a cure for Damen. I'm sorry, but what cure are you talking about?Damen's not dying or sick; he just can't touch you. That doesn't really warrant a need for a cure for me. The world will not come to an end if your boyfriend cannot touch you. But of course Ever needs Damen's touch to live, so she does stupid shit after stupid shit so she and Damen can fuck. I spent two hours reading about a girl whining because she and her boyfriend can't have sex. There were other parts of the story as well. For instance, there's a new guy named Jude who is Ever's reincarnated lover and a last minute addition to a triangle. Of course we all know Ever will not end up with Jude because these YA writers like to make the choice completely obvious and derail the healthy love interest. Since Jude is a nice, friendly, non-angsty boy, Ever obviously won't end up with him. But Damen doesn't understand that nice guys get shit, so he leaves Ever with Jude so they can sort out their long-lost business together. Of course Ever is lost without Damen and shows absolutely no interest in life, because Damen was her only reason for living. But wait! Suddenly she's getting feelings for Jude. Yeah, 3/4 into the book is not the best time for Ever to magically develop feelings for Jude. But we all know these YA heroines- they're useless without a love interest, and when one leaves, they latch onto the next hot guy. There's some other stuff as well, mostly about Ever trying to stop her aunt Sabine from dating her teacher, and Damen trying to atone for past selfishness. But the main gist is Ever trying to trick Roman into giving her the antidote and continually being a selfish dumbass.
2. My second grievance. The characters. I'm a big character reader. My writing teacher said that we should care about the characters, and I don't care about Ever. No, I do care about Ever. I despise her. Right now I'm fantasizing about magically teleporting into the book, beating her with a bat, scratching her eyes out, and then jumping on her mangled body. I'm aware it won't work because she can do some deus machina healing bullshit, but I need this stress relief. Where do I begin with Ever Bloom? She's just so unlikeable I don't know where to begin. Let's see if I can manage to write down just why she sucks. She's a brat. All she cares about is hooking up with Damen. When her aunt tells her she needs to get a job, Ever whines about it because she won't have time to find the antidote for Damen so they can fuck. Priorities, people. Ever manages to avoid the horror of working and having a life outside of Damen by going to a metaphysical bookstore where she meets the third point of the love triangle. She also doesn't want her aunt to date her teacher because it will be inconvenient for her. Ever told the teacher, Munoz, about her powers, and now she's afraid that her Sabine will find out. Of course there's no possibility that Sabine will be understanding because parents/ guardian figures never understand the protagonist. They should be dropped the second the smoldering love interest comes into play.
Ever is shallow and selfish. Damen went to the Shadowlands for a brief period of time, I think. Now he's shaken up about what happened and determined to make things right. He realizes he was a selfish bastard and I applaud him for it. Ever, on the other hand, whines because Damen isn't dressing nicely anymore or driving the hot BMW. She insists that she'd love Damen no matter what, but she admits that she was initially attracted to him because he was rich. Shallow bitch. She spends a good bit of time complaining because Damen isn't manifesting material things anymore and dressing nicely. Boo fucking hoo. If your boyfriend trying to be more responsible is that much of a problem, he should dump your ass. Ever also displays her selfishness in this book. Two twins, Romy and Rayne, are trapped in the mortal world thanks to Ever's mistake with Roman. They have no idea how to survive, since they are from the time of the Salem Witch trials. Does Ever care that they are stranded because of her? I think there's a brief period of remorse, but it's overshadowed by her more urgent needs. Damen thinks that they owe it to the twins to help them, since they helped him find Ever, but Ever is upset because Rayne(one of the only characters I liked) calls her out on her bullshit. Of course since she dislikes Ever no one will listen to her, even if she's right. Ever tries to send the twins back to Summerland so she doesn't have to handle the inconvenience of a thirteen-year old disliking her and having more common sense than she does.
Ever is an idiot. She's so consumed with trying to have sex with Damen that she goes against everyone's sensible advice. Damen tells her that Roman is a liar and can't be trusted. So what does Ever do? Like any good incompetent heroine, she goes right to Roman and gets into trouble. How many times does this happen? I dunno, I lost count. My favorite was the time she went to Roman and he blackmailed her saying he'd tell Damen. But her crowning moment of stupidity has to be when she casts a spell using the Book of Shadows to get Roman to give her the antidote. Never mind that Jude and Damen warn her that people get over their head when they use magic (or is it spelled magick in this book?) and that she should not try to impose her will on people because things are supposed to be a certain way. Those people didn't know what they were doing. Ever has a great need- she has to see her boyfriend! Surely that trumps all needs. So she casts a spell to make Roman give her the antidote. Romy and Rayne, who are far more experienced, tell Ever that she's made a huge mistake. But of course Ever knows better than the twins and ignores them. Turns out she fucked up royally, but the only two characters who will call her out on this will be Roman and Rayne. Rayne will be ignored because she doesn't like Ever(smart girl) and Roman will be ignored because he is a villain. Then Ever makes another stupid mistake by changing her whiny, over dramatic, bitchy best friend Haven into an Immortal.The book ends with Ever whining about how she fucked up and Damen forgiving her. Herein lies my main problem. No one can call Ever out on her shit and have her listen. Damen just hugs her and says she had the best intentions, it wasn't her fault, and that it will be okay. No! Damen needs to stop coddling Ever and tell her she's fucked up. How is she supposed to grow as a character if the only person she will listen to does not call her on her mistakes? I don't care if she had the best intentions(personally I found them to be selfish) she's still wrong. She's fucked up so many times, yet no one calls her on it. Please, for the love of God, have someone call her on her mistakes! Oh, who am I kidding? Ever will never have anyone call her on her bullshit and she'll never listen if they do. She'll continue fucking up and everyone will magically forgive her. It's wonderful being the main character of a shitty YA novel.
There was a slight saving grace in this book- Rayne and Roman. I know that I'm supposed to oppose them because they're mean to poor, delicate, useless Ever, but I liked them. Rayne was the only one to call Ever out on her shit and through her I could say the things I wanted to Ever. It's too bad no one listens to her. Roman was just a fun character. He didn't really seem villainous, up until he poisoned Haven. It was fun watching him taunt and tease Ever, especially since she could never get the upper hand. Their dialogue reminded me of dialogue better written couples have had when they are still in the stage of disliking each other. Roman and Rayne rock, but they weren't enough to save this book. I know no one will listen to Rayne, and Roman is probably going to die.
What bothers me most about this book is the plot and characters. I can deal with an unoriginal plot if there are vivid characters, and I can deal with unlikeable characters if there's an interesting plot. Sometimes I will be fortunate enough to get both, but I can settle with one. I got neither an interesting plot or interesting characters in this book. The plot is just stupid.In fact, I don't think there was a plot- just Alyson Noel jumping around a few ideas. The most consistent thing was Ever trying to find a cure for Damen, which doesn't count as a plot.I don't care if she and her boyfriend can't touch. If they're supposed to have this brilliant, all-consuming, superior, wonderful love, their relationship should be able to survive without physical touch. I hesitate to include the love triangle because it was randomly introduced 218 pages in, and it's obvious that Ever will choose Damen. I guess Ever's whining might count as a plot point as well, I'm not sure. I hated the characters. I don't know if I've scratched the surface with how much I HATE Ever. My words seem inadequate. She's selfish, lazy, shallow, stupid, stupid, a moron, an idiot, lobotomized, and STUPID! If she wasn't a character in a best-selling series, her ass would have been dead, dead, dead, and DEAD! Sadly there is no justice in the world. This book caused me pain. I mean it. I'm not exaggerating for comedy purposes. I had to restrain myself from beating myself over the head with this piece of shit book. I felt like crying when I saw I had a 110 pages left. I had to stop to bang my head when I read that Damen was keeping tabs on Ever since she was ten. I tried to bang my head against the wall, but my chair was too low. I had to settle for pinching myself instead. Eventually I couldn't bring myself to read any further and had to take a break. I went on Goodreads and started clicking the one star a bunch of times. It eased my stress slightly. Why didn't I stop? Because I'm a masochist and I had to see just how bad this was. What bothers me is that Ever has no personality outside of being madly in lust with Damen. I'm not sure if Alyson Noel meant for Ever to be such a shallow, stupid bitch, so I'm not sure if I should count those as her personality traits. She's like most of these YA heroines these days- her boyfriend defines her. Is it so much to ask for a heroine to have a personality that isn't whiny and doesn't focus on her love interest? Is it? But no. This makes money. I understand that people need money, but must our standards be lowered? Why can't we have strong female protagonists who like their love interests for their personalities? Why can't the love interests have personalities and be actual characters?
According to TV Tropes, this series is a follow of the leader of Twilight. It should have ended with Twilight, but there was no strength left in the heart of publishers.(less)

The first time I read the book I was so angry with Ever, because of her stupid behavior that I didn't pay enough attention to the other characters and what was going on. I have no words for Ever, she annoys me tremendously in this book. At the end of "Blue Moon" she made a huge mistake and obviously didn't learn from this mistake at all, because she just continues to trust the wrong people and to do the wrong things, she doesn't listen to people that are older/wiser and know more about immortality and magick. Damen gives her an amulet for protection that she mustn't take off and what does she do, she takes it off and gets hurt. Damen and the twins tell her not to trust Roman and stay away from him and what does she do, she runs to Roman and he plays with her. When she finds a Book of Shadows everybody who knows about the book tells her that it is dangerous in the wrong hands and she has to stay away from it and what does she do, she uses it and makes things worse and hides it all from Damen.
The books ends with a choice and it would have been a pleasant surprise if -for a change- she would have made the right one.

Damen is adorable, patient and wise in this book, but I do think he has to keep a better eye on Ever. I share his opinion about karma that every action, good or bad, is followed sooner or later by a reaction. I admire the fact that when he says that he wants to make up for his past and improve his karma, he takes immediate action and gets rid of material things and takes loving care of the twins. I wish that Ever would have been more supportive of him, but instead she's whining about his car, clothes, him spending time with the twins etc. Damen talks a lot about the downside of being immortal and the Shadowland where there's no soul and only darkness. He finds a way so they can touch each other as long as they don't have the antidote, he gives Ever an amulet for protection and gives her the freedom to make her own choices.

I got what I hoped for, because in this book we learn a lot of interesting facts about the background of the twins that are not able to return to Summerland, because they've lost their magick. Ava comes back from.... we don't know and a new character, Jude, is introduced who has some unfinished business with Ever and we don't know if he's one of the good or bad guys.

Let's stay optimistic and hope that Ever will come to her senses in the next installment, because otherwise I think I'll just going to have to slap her, and that Damen is right, quote: "Some things no matter how painful happen for a reason. And just to barge in and interfere, no matter how well mentioned, would be akin to robbing them of their journey. Something that's better not done."

I really enjoy this series! It’s fun, it’s fast, it’s entertaining. I loved the first two books! This time around.... didn’t love it so much.

As I mentioned before, it took me no time at all to read. The plot was intriguing, but it just wasn’t enough to satisfy me this time around. I loved the introduction of the “shadowland” but it just lacked substance in the plot overall.

The main problem in this book is Ever and Damen can't touch each other.
The setting contributes because thats where everything is and happenes. I don't think this could take place in a different place and time period because in present day we have so many new and high tec things that cant be in the past.

It appears that about every six months I will stumble across the next "Immortals" book in the library, and I will check it out. Why I do this, I am not entirely sure, as the first one, Evermore, was literally the worst piece of published fiction I have ever read. If I'm being honest, I must admit that a large part of the reason I do this, along with curiosity, is that deep down, every couple of months, my inner troll needs something to passionately hate and mock. And, dear god, if you're looking for something to passionately hate and mock, the "Immortals" series is the series for you. It is unintentionally hilarious, except for the parts that just make your head want to explode.
So, let's talk about Shadowland! Like it's predecessors, it is bad. However, there are little improvements made as the series progresses. It's interesting to watch an author grow as they write a series. Between the first and second book, as you may recall, Alyson Noel learned how to have a marginally less insufferable protagonist, and how to keep the annoying love interest out of book for most of plot so we could ignore him. Now, between the second and third book, Alyson Noel has apparently learned to keep the gender of the protagonist's dead dog consistent. (Through the three books I have read, 4 out of 6 pronouns agree that Buttercup is a girl! Is this deliberate, or an unintentional fluke? Maybe more will be revealed in about six months when I read the fourth one!) This is somewhat unfortunate, though, as what Alyson Noel should have been learning is how to structure a plot that makes an ounce of sense, or at least doesn't make you want to scratch out your eyeballs.
Her main problem seems to be that her villains don't know how to plan worth beans. They just sort of...do things, and then, if the outcome works out in their favor, they claim it was their plan all along. In Shadowland, we're told over and over again that Roman is some genius puppet master while the heroes are only his pawns. However, his "genius" plan seems to consist of the following steps:
1. Hang around.
2. Brag about how he has a plan, which he will implement...eventually.
3. Hit on the main character.
4. Open an antique store.
5. Attend high school.
6. Getting the protagonist's best friend to come home with him and then poisoning her. And then making the protagonist choose between saving her friend and being able to touch her boyfriend.
I suppose maybe this plan could be genius in its simplicity or something, except that we're not really given an explanation as to why Roman decided to spend most of the book dicking around. I'm pretty sure Haven would have gone home with him at the very beginning of the book! Even if she wouldn't, Roman has the power to hypnotize people or whatever. He didn't need to spend the whole book slowly gaining her trust! He could have just implemented his very short and simple plan right away! It'd take maybe an hour out of his day. Is he just too busy with other side projects? In fact, I'd sort of like to see a book all about Roman, and what he does with his time. I mean, his "genius" plans may be pretty dumb by real world standards, but he seems like he has a lot of fun: Hanging out, doing whatever, making Ever's life unpleasant whenever he finds the time/feels like it, maybe hanging out at Taco Bell and dancing around his house in his underpants while listening to Paris Hilton. Maybe he's manifested himself a giant throne just for watching Mythbusters! Doesn't he sound more interesting than our unpleasant, whiny, simi-bi-polar protagonist Ever? I'm sure it's unintentional, and if there actually was a book written about him, it would be very boring, but I do like to imagine him as an interesting, goofy, poser-villain when no one is looking.
So, if your use your imagination, the villain in the book has actually improved! Also, I believe the narration is less inconstant than the second one, only by such a small margin that it's kind of difficult to judge. On the down side, Damen keeps showing up and being stupid! Boo! We're also introduced to this other guy, Jude, and there's a useless attempt at a love triangle, even though you know the protagonist is never going to end up with a guy we aren't even introduced to until the third book. Romy and Rayne are also there for some reason. These three characters provide most of the pointless subplots that make you want to scratch your eyeballs out, though after several pages of Ever and Damen, particularly when Damen is "explaining" things, you're practically begging the useless side characters to make another appearance.
As to what actually happens in this 339-page novel, the answer is: not a lot. But that's a problem the predecessors had, so we won't be redundant by going too much into it. Suffice to say that that's the main aspect of these novels that hasn't gotten better over time, even minutely.(less)

I’d read some good reviews for ‘Shadowland’ but also some not-so-good ones. Therefore I was a bit apprehensive about reading this instalment but seen as though I loved the first two I decided to give it ago.
‘Shadowland’ immediately begins with a dilemma for Ever. She is faced with the heartbreaking task of telling the love of her many lives Damen about the consequences of the decision she made at the end of ‘Blue Moon’. The consequence being that if they share just one touch, Damon will die. This means the couple have to find the antidote to the antidote if they are ever truly going to be together. Enemy Roman has what they need but will Ever pay his price?
The plot in this instalment is not as action-packed as the previous two however it suffices as a great developer. By this I mean, it poses more questions to its reader and introduces new plots which will continue into the fourth instalment. To start with I felt a little disappointed that I wasn’t getting the answers to the questions raised in ‘Blue Moon’ however as the book progressed, I found I appreciated the suspense of not knowing all the answers. In my opinion, this is a smart move from Alyson Noel. It helps in building up the excitement for the following instalments.
In terms of characterisation, there is only one new character introduced in the form of Jude, the employer of Ever. I’m not completely engrossed in his character yet and this may be purely because I’m a huge fan of Damen. When Jude and Ever meet there are both unaware that it wasn’t their first meeting. Damen, however, knows better. I don’t want to give too much away about this but it’s a great example of an introduction to a new plot which I’m sure will have me engrossed. I might not be a huge fan of Jude at the moment, but I’m very interested in how his relationship with Ever continues.
I have to dedicate a part of this review to Damen. I thought in ‘Blue Moon’ I had him sussed out completely yet Noel manages to show readers yet another side to him. Damen’s character changes somewhat in this instalment as he contemplates the consequences of the choices he’s made in his life as an Immortal. I loved how Noel incorporated the idea of Karma into the plot. His attitudes towards certain things may differ from the other two books but his spark is still there. I look forward to learning even more about him in the next instalment and I’m sure Noel will surprise me with more great character development.

There are two aspects to this book I didn’t like so much. First of all, after reading ‘Blue Moon’ I was looking forward to reading about the complications Ever and Damen will face with not being able to touch. These are a couple who have been in love over countless lifetimes and after making the decision in ‘Blue Moon’ to consummate that love, something got in the way. I was interested to read how they would deal with yet another setback. Without giving too much away, they do find a way to touch and I wish that Noel had waited to introduce this solution a bit longer. Although there problems aren’t fully solved but I would have liked to read a bit more about the frustration and difficulties they could have faced by being truly separated physically.
Secondly and this is no criticism of Noel’s writing but purely my own opinion. I found I’ve grown to dislike Haven. I can’t even offer much reason for why this is so as she doesn’t feature too heavily in this instalment. It’s something I can’t put my finger on. Her character started to annoy me. The ending makes it evident that she will feature a lot more in the next book so I’m crossing my fingers that I can grow to love her or at least like her.
I mentioned that I read some not-so-good reviews of this book and for me, this book is an example of how each reader can have their own opinion on a particular book and shouldn’t always be influenced too much about the reviews they read. This book might not be as good as ‘Evermore’ and Blue Moon’ but for me it was still a pretty good read. I can’t wait to read subsequent book ‘Dark Flame’ and hopefully get the answers to some of the questions raised in this one.

So I basically started this book and read until I finished it. I can't say i'm exactly disappointed in Shadowland, it's more i'm disappointed with the series so far. Shadowland introduced more aspects to the story that make me intrigued as to how it will play out. Shadowland empieza dónde terminó Espejismos. Damen ha regresado a la normalidad gracias al trato de Ever con Roman, pero con un pequeño inconveniente: los protagonistas no pueden tocarse, ni siquiera un roce de sus labio, el mínimo contacto entre ambos mandaría a Damen directo a la dimensión en la que muere los inmortales, un limbo de condena eterna. Este giro de la historia se hace interesante porque descubrimos más cosas sobre Summerland y sobre este nuevo lugar al que van los en lugar de morir. De principio a fin hay una constante tensión entre los personajes. Primero por el ya de sobra explotado tema de sus relaciones íntimas inexistentes, ahora hay un obstáculo más, y segundo por las dudas que provoca esta situación en los personajes.
Y aquí es donde aparece el tercer hombre en la vida de Ever: JUDE. Maravilloso, guapísimo y comprensivo, se entienden y conectan sorprendentemente bien. ¿O es mágicamente bien? Sin duda es mi favorito de los tres personajes masculinos principales. Es el punto medio entre Damen y Roman, un chico mucho más natural, menos arquetípico, más normal e igualmente estupendo. La relación entre Ever y Jude es más sencilla, fluye sola, sin tantos problemas inmortales. Creo que en las próximas entregas tendrá un papel aún más importante.
Echo de menos la presencia de Haven y Miles como amigos inseparables de la protagonista. Aunque a falta de amistad, tenemos enemistad con Haven. Y ahí es donde entra Roman. Me encanta esta nueva relación a tres y cómo el chico las envuelve, las enfrenta y las provoca. Un punto de emoción, y enredos, en un libro bastante calmado.
En mi opinión es un libro de transición: lanza muchas cuestiones, nuevos argumentos, abre caminos y plantea difíciles decisiones para los protagonistas, pero me dejó la sensación de que no pasa nada. En esta entrega conocemos a los personajes mucho más profundamente, su carácter, sus virtudes, sus debilidades y sus límites. Se muestran y se describen en profundidad distintos tipos de amor en los diferentes personajes: amor puro, amor eterno, amor egoísta, amor divertido, amor sincero. Además, un tema importante en la trama, y muy recurrente en novelas románticas, es el destino contra el amor. El eterno dilema al que se enfrentan los grandes enamorados de la historia. ¿Quién será más fuerte?
A pesar de todo, y para mi sorpresa, me dejó con ganas de leer el siguiente.(less)

Well if you read the first to books of The Immortals series, then you have to keep on reading! This series by Alyson Noel is made for the people out there looking for a book of half romance/half fantasy. These books keep you on the edge and wanting to read more. I'm not comparing this book to the Twilight Saga by any means, but if you weren't a fan of those books than you won't be a fan of these. Too bad so sad.

The series as a whole, I feel, has vast potential but the bulk of the narrative often comes off as contrived, convenient and predictable.

That’s not say there isn’t some entertainment here, or some value. But as with many young adult novels and series, the core of the story relies heavily on a teenage love affair that is supernatural in nature and therefore, ridden with complications and conflict. And of course, the girl protagonist at the heart of all is so deeply infatuated, that her life is essentially defined by this boy’s mere existence. Not a great message to be sending to the demographic, but stories of intense romance can be given a little liberty and some forgiveness for this contrivance. After all, what makes Romeo & Juliet, for example, so timeless and beloved is it’s very insistence that life is worth nothing without love.

I feel like the each story in each book is simply a new conflict to keep the two lovers apart. And there is nothing wrong with that except that the characters remain–more or less–unchanged. Ever and Damen both struggle with own moral compasses and both are also both vaguely aware of their selfish compulsion to be together, no matter the consequences. But each book merely introduces a new antagonist(s) connected with Damen’s shady past and each of these villains makes it their mission to keep Damen and Ever apart. Because, obviously, a bunch of immortals with nothing but time and a profound vendetta have nothing better to do than to taunt Ever, who–for all intents and purposes–is just an innocent girl, never complicit in the acts her beau took part in centuries ago. Yes, that was sarcasm there.

The saga of Ever and Dame is just a long and redundant tale thus far, a tautology that bogs down the narrative. Certainly there are other elements within the story to draw from and create conflict with, but instead the author dwells on the focused romance, as if nothing else exists. Of course, little else does exist to these two characters.

Now, the whole idea of Ever and Damen not being able to touch for eternity is an intruguing idea and certainly reminiscent of the lovers’s plight in the tv series Pushing Daisies. It has the capacity to create this potent and volatile sexual tension but instead the author introduces a slight loophole. So throughout this novel the two do “touch” through a sheet of energy that barely separates them. I was disappointed that Ever and Damen could embrace or hold hands and even kiss; it takes away much of the power of their situation if they are able to find a way to circumvent it.

Characters need growth in order to form a true connection with the reader. One could argue that there is growth here. Damon, for example, feels this “curse” is karma coming to collect on him and so he willfully changes his routins and behavior. He rids himself of material things, adopts a new wardrobe–one without designer labels–and gives away his car. He insists Ever explore her connection with the mysterious Jude to see if something sparks there. But where one might see growth in these changes, I simply see a whiny martyr. But thats just me.

There’s far better Young Adult paranormal/fantasy book series out there, none that–in my opinion–surpass the epic The Mortal Instruments. (And yes, that includes you, Twilight!) Will I keep reading The Immortals? For now, yes. I’m three books in and harbor a small hope that Alyson Noël can salvage these characters, who remain frustratingly two-dimensional and unidentifiable. She has a good idea here; it just needs some nurture, a little more substance, and a bit of nuance. The devil’s in the details, after all.(less)
