Don't watch the ball while the center is snapping it back to the quarterback; watch the linemen. Whether they stand up or hunch over is crucial to predict how the play will be made.
That's one of the things I learned from A Sportscaster's Guide to Watching Football. I also have a chart of the line up in the offense and defense positions and information on what each player does - the WR, LT, LG, C, RG, TE, QB, and RB. And don't worry - the book explains what all those initials mean. More...

The Short of It:
Short, yet packed with useful information. This is the guide for those that want to know more about the game yet don’t have a lot of time in front of the TV to figure it all out.
The Rest of It:
When I was asked to review this book I jumped at the chance. Sometimes books just end up in your hands at the right time, you know? The Hub has always been incredibly frustrated by my lack of knowledge in the area of football. When I watch football, I com More...

Although this book is short, it's still the reading equivalent of digging through a refrigerator box full of packing peanuts to find an index card with about four useful bits of information written on it. In the author's defense, he specifically points out that this is written for people who know next to nothing about the game, but it's so stuffed with boring stories and meandering asides that I'm sure were meant to be humorous that it's an utter chore to identify the wheat among all the chaff.

Mark Oristano was a sportscaster for over 30 years with the NFL. He has broken down the strategy behind the game to terms so simple anyone who has never watched football, would understand. This goes for college and high school football as well, not just the NFL. I love watching football, so there were a lot of things I already new in the book, but that did deter me to read it further. This book would make a great gift for anyone starting out about foot ball or the old pro in your home.

I now understand the game and terminology better, but this book had a lot of flaws. The first part was readable, but as we got to plays it got harder to understand.
