داستانِ بسیار زیبایی بود که موضوعِ اصلی آن ترس از « مرگ» بود و البته اشاره به خرافات و احظارِ روح دارد و انتقاد از عقب ماندگی ها و ناهنجاری هایِ اجتماعی ... که به طنزی شیرین و پنهانی، آغشته شده بود... ترسِ مردی که در جلسۀ احضارِ روح، روحِ « اسپینوزا» به او گفته بود: پایانِ عمرت نزدیک است... توبه کن!... همین امشب

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born in the small seaport of Taganrog, southern Russia, the son of a grocer. Chekhov's grandfather was a serf, who had bought his own freedom and that of his three sons in 1841. He also taught himself to read and write.
