I first started reading John Saul when i was in high school. His books were an alternative to re-reading all of my Stephen King books.
I really enjoyed his earlier books like "When the Wind Blows", "Comes the Blind Fury", "Punish the Sinners", etc.
But lately Saul seems stuck in a rut. Each book has basically the same characters, just different settings and circumstances. Each book involves teenagers being menaced in some way and stupid adults who don't believe or u...more

John Saul is a bit of a tush.
This book was god-awful. It provided a whole lot of background and build up, leading to a completely incomprehensible and a simply poor ending.
It reminds me of the time my high school girlfriend wanted to "save herself" for Prom night - and then, that night, she left early because her best friend needed consoling for some reason.
A whole lot of waiting and patience and anticipation - and I was just left unsatisfied.

Been a long time since I read a John Saul book, but this one looks like he's gone back to his roots - kids, horrible things happening/being done to kids, demons/ghosts/possession... it's all in here.
This was a really quick, quick read. Started it in the morning while doing laundry and finished it before hopping into bed just after midnight. I just kept wanting to see what the heck was going on, and that's usually a sign of a, while not great, at least engaging book. I needed a bit of mass...more

A story about possessions occurring in a Catholic school that draw the attention of the Pope who decides to make the school one of his North American stops only to find that the possessions are not all they seem and something even more sinister is afoot. The book is well written with in-depth knowledge of Catholic rites and rituals. The plot was well-developed and shows to what lengths terrorism will extend. It was an entertaining read, but not something that will remain with me for any length o...more

I didn't make it through this one. There are just some things about John Saul's writing style that drives me nuts. He tells you things that should be so obvious that I actually get insulted that he thinks his readers are so dumb. He also does a lot of this:
He could tells that things were going to get bad.
Really bad.
I'm sure the plot is interesting but frankly I don't care enough to wade through watery narration and corny dialogue.

So there I was in Ely, at the only grocery store in town, and I'd forgotten to bring any books with me (unpardonable sin, I know, but that's what happens when you're functioning on 5 hours' sleep because you were up late the night before baking for your mom's Summer Sweet And Savory Fest). It was down to this or "The Millionaire's Inexperienced Love Slave."
I made the wrong choice.

This was more like a 2.5 rating for me but since that option doesn't exist, I will err on the side of positivity. Didn't like the graphic gross-out factor in portions of the plot. Thought that even though it reads like a supernatural thriller with some dark spiritual mumbo-jumbo, some of the sequences were simply too unbelievable for this reader to swallow.

I've been a horror fan since the day of Jaws and The Amityville Horror. So whenever a horror book makes it to the New York Times Best Sellers list, I've got to read it. The reason is I'm chasing the boo factor. I just love those scare-the-pants-right-off-ya novels; and let's face it, John Saul's books ranks at the top.

A weak offering from a weak author. Every now and then I like to fall back on a quick, easy read. I often think about him as the Danielle Steele of horror fiction (Dean Koontz is in the same league). I still pick up a new novel every now and then just for cheap entertainment.

I've been a big John Saul fan for a long time. This one.... not so good. He writes well in that it really moves you through the story. But I just thought the whole last part of the book was silly. It could have been lots better.

Typical John Saul fare. Teenagers in peril and some dying badly. Lots of fun if you can suspend disbelief and enjoy teenagers exploding in gobs of gooey flesh and blood or being possesed by supernatural evil. Yea!

This book was ok. I'm not into demonology and such and the us of high school students possessed just really didn't do it for me!
Sorry, Mr. Saul
I would say SKIP this one unless you're a DIE hard Saul fan.

sorry, but I couldn't get past the first chapter on this one before boredom set in.
Ordered "Brother Odd" by Dean Koontz from the book store a few days ago; should be in on Friday. Can't wait to start it.

About 20 years ago, I loved John Saul's books. I have not liked the last three or four. I don't know if I'm getting too old for them, or if they are just not as good.

The ending was super weak. I really expected there to be more explanations of the aftermath. I feel like the author just kind of gave up after the big climax.

Good book with lots of suspense. An unexpected twist included which made the end rather predictable. Strong beginning and middle but the end was rather poor.

I read this book right when it came out, and It was great. Definitely compares to "Cradle and All" by James Patterson in a great religious horror story.

This was pretty creepy. About a man who faked Exorcism's in Catholic school children to try and get the Pope to come so he could kill him.

This is the 2nd book I've read of his. I liked Black Creek Crossing a lot more. I just didn't find it scary.

Interesting twists but not up to usual John Saul novels. I was glad when it was over.
