Well....at least this series doesn't have sparkling vampires or a dumb whiny heroine. Claire is sixteen-and a freshman in college. Claire is pushed down stairs, slapped, and hit by the girls. She's pretty much miserable and scared in her new campus life. I could symphasize with Claire (I've certainly never been pushed down the stairs, slapped, or hit in the eye, and later on had acid poured down my back) but I have been the butt of jokes, been called bitch, annoying, weird, (pretty much everything besides skank or slut) in the book and have had quite a few rumors spread about me.

Her love for books and knowledge (and school overall) is strange to me (while I enjoy some classes and certain topics I never enjoyed and still don't school as much as our main heroine does). I am also pretty sheltered myself so I can understand that as well. That aside, Monica: I couldn't fathom just because Claire corrected her on World War II, why she hazes her. Most popular girls would of just scoffed at you, then went about on their pretty popular air headed ways. But Monica is so embaressed she makes Claire's life a living hell-literally.

After being bullied for so long and facing the wrath of Monica everyday, Claire decides she needs to find a place to stay for the time being (she's not too keen on dying while she's 16). She calls up a number and is machined/voice mailed by the Glass House. And here the plot starts. After having a cabby drive her to the address given on the machine and paying a hefty fine for such a short drive, she meets Eve: the goth girl with a snarky and blunt attitude who lives in the GH along with two other boys, Shane and Michael.

Characters

Claire: I honestly wanted to slap her sometimes. For 16, she's not smart at times. You'd think after she was subjected to so much bullying and after she finally is allowed to stay at the GH (for an exchange of helping with groceries and paying rent), she would never set foot in that college again, and stay where she's safe, like her roomates advise her to do. But, being stubborn, she insists she must show up at her classes and continue her work (I personally would of just stayed in the GH and forgotten about school all together but that's just me). All she gets for going back is more bullying, but it finally gets into her head it's not such a good idea (could've told you that one). That aside, I liked her humor and her naive personality. She's got a good head on her shoulder's for the most part though.

Eve: I loved her attitude, but I felt her outward apperance was....a bit too stereotypical. The average goth. She did make me laugh at times. "My clothes!!!" only she would of worried about her clothes in a time like that. She gets points for her Mama Hen sort of attitude and she's a no boss type of girl.

Michael: He was like the adult in the house. Big Brother/Dad to everyone in it. He has a secret though.

Shane: LOVED his attitude and his personality....pretty much everything about him.

The vampires were: Can eat garlic, can go into the sun, had fangs (some stuff that was and wasn't stereotypical), but I enjoyed that they weren't Twilight vamps (though my inital reaction after I saw the reccomendation for fans of Twilight after my boyfriend pointed it out was GROAN).

The writing had a charm to it. It wasn't the worst, it wasn't the best, but it certainly has potential. I enjoyed the cast of characters, and I hope they become more fleshed out in the other books in the series, once I have a chance to read all of them. The book was good enough to keep me entertained, and I didn't skip to the end to find out what happened because I didn't like it. On to The Dead Girls' Dance!(less)

I actually never heard of the MORGANVILLE VAMPIRES before, and I picked up this book because, honestly, I liked the cover. It was pretty and a little mysterious and dark and I knew it obviously had something to do with vampires.

I was immediately attracted by this book. Somehow, I feel connected to the protagonist, Claire Danvers because of her geeky (and a little bit nerdy) style. I'd also like to compliment the cover - it's really eye-catching

Poor Claire has come to Morganville to go to college. At only 16, Claire was hoping to go to MIT, but her parents wanted her to be much closer to home. Unfortunately they've shipped her off to her version of hell. She's picked on horribly by the local bully Monica and when she finally fights back, she's shoved down the stairs and has her life threatened. Desperate to get out, she finds a notice for a room for rent and after much waffling she goes to check it out. She first meets Eve and Shane, two of her (hopefully) soon to be roommates. They take an instant shine to her, but she has to wait on the word of the house's owner, Micheal, if she can stay. He, who doesn't show up till that evening, tells her no at first. He doesn't want her in the house, she's too young and it's dangerous for everyone.
Eventually he gives in and she starts staying there, but the shit has hit the fan. Monica, a complete bitch from hell, has people out looking for her. She's broken some rules... and Eve tells her you don't want to get on the vampires' bad side. VAMPIRES?! Claire doesn't want to believe it until she runs into one herself.
As is normal in paranormal, crazy shit happens, like her roommate Micheal only being alive at night and a ghost during the day, trapped in the house, and the house gets attacked by the locals and almost burned to the ground. The end is a cliffhanger with Shane's father coming up after being called and killing Micheal. NO! HOW CAN IT END LIKE THAT?!

Dead Girl's Dance

This book picks right up where the last one left off. NO! MICHEAL HAS BEEN KILLED! And Shane's father is a huge prick! Holy shit!

But of course Micheal isn't really dead. Apparently he can't die, but he really can't do anything being trapped in the house. It's discovered that Shane's father sent him there to spy on the vampires, vampires who are responsible for the deaths of both his sister and mother. But Shane said things were different now, that he doesn't want to cause anymore trouble in town.

Again, much more craziness happens and Shane is found with the body of a dead vamp, the same vamp who'd been harassing Eve and Claire. They look him in a cage in the center of town and say they're going to burn him alive. Of course Claire can't have that, she just got the guy she can't lose him already. Shane's father, angry about the whole caging his son thing (or so we think) kidnaps Monica saying she'll burn is Shane does.

In the end, the whole thing had been a set up by Oliver, local coffee shop owner, Eve's former boss, and vampire douche-bag. Oliver had wanted Brandon dead for all the trouble he was causing and was using Shane and his father to do his dirty work. Micheal makes the ultimate sacrifice and asks the town's found, Amilie, to finish what Oliver had started and turn him into a vampire so that he could a. leave the freaking house and b. save his friend.

Shane freaks out after he finds out his best friend is now a vamp and treats him horribly. It ends with a note from Amilie to Claire saying she cannot protect them from the repercussions of her actions unless Claire swears her service to her. Feeling like she has no choice, she signs her life away.

All around I'd have to say I enjoyed these books quite a lot. The romance between the two couples is sweet and there is just enough action and adventure mixed him. I wish they hadn't saved Monica. I hate that bitch. I also felt really bad for Sam, who was introduced in book 2. Poor vampire man is so alone and all because Amilie.... grrrr!

I'd highly recommend these books to anyone. It's a good read.

I had high expectations for this book and I was pleased with what I read. The concept of a college town that's secretly run by vampires was interesting and the political aspect was equally attention keeping.

So, I was totally srprised by how much I LOVED these books! I checked them out of my library warily because I've been so burned out on vampires after the recent craze in YA books. This is Volume 1 of Rachel Caine’s Morganville Vampire series. This volume includes the first 2 books of the series: Glass Houses and The Dead Girls’ Dance. Both of these books are very entertaining.

"Glass Houses" introduces us to the main character, Claire, as she settles into college, at the age of 16, in the middle of a town filled with mystery and secrets. After being nearly killed by a rival girl, Claire seeks refuge in a house across town. The owner of the house, Michael, is only around at night – disappearing during the day; Eve, is the goth poster girl; and Shane, is, well cute, in an “I’m a slacker – I don’t have a job and I play video games all day/night” kind of way. When things heat up, unbelieving at first, Claire realizes that all is not what it seems in Morganville and neither is one of the occupants of her new home.

"The Dead Girls’ Dance" title is really kind of misleading I thought. The dance itself is part of the book, not until the end, and isn’t really worth the hype from the back cover. To keep from spoiling it though, I will not discuss this part of the book in detail. The main focus of this book is the entrance of Shane’s father as a vampire-killer, vigilante-type, biker gang leader (did you get all that?) who tries to use not only Shane as leverage but also as a weapon against those that are not-so-much-on-the-living-side-of-things.

I am very impressed with the writing style of these books. The books are busy with various storylines and Ms. Caine manages to keep them flowing smoothly, intertwined sufficiently, and cohesive. Each situation so far has been solved, added to, or continued in a very understandable, plausible, I-didn’t-forget-about-this-tidbit or action-in-anyway type of format. So far there isn’t really a true hero or heroine in these books. The entire human population of the town lives in fear of the creatures that stalk them; some of them can even be out during the day. Leaving the town is possible but not advisable as the vampires can do some interesting mind tricks to you to make you forget the town—BUT—if you ever start remembering anything while outside the bounds of Morganville, they will hunt you down and destroy you.

When I finished up The Dead Girls’ Dance I couldn’t wait for Volume 2 but; alas, it was already checked out at the local library so I had to wait. I recommend having Vol. 2 available so you can easily transition to it instead of having to wait, like I did.

According to the author’s website, these books are suitable for Young Adults ages 13 and up, but be warned that there is mild swearing.

Okay, okay, I realize I give a lot of the books I read five stars, but what can I say, I love every one of them. Maybe it's because I pick really great books or my friends recommend them to me. Either way, I give this one 5 stars as well.

Morganville vampires book 1 is my favorite vampire book now in the world and i want the entire series.I found myself on my tip toes not wanting to put this book down. There was everything I expected from the begging.Forbidden love, detrimental adventure and it was just straight out hilarious at times. The first two books in the series are called The Glass House and Dead Girl Dance, which revolve around the character of Claire Danvers, a sixteen year old prodigy attending Texas Prairie University, and her friends Eve, Michael and Shane. The story takes place in the vampire-controlled city of Morganville, Texas.

Claire is a fun lead character and refreshingly is full of common sense, handling situations in a mature way. While she was certainly not dynamic or groundbreaking there was a proper balance of a teenage girl at sixteen-years old bit in a situation that tests her maturity. Since she is painted as an intellectual prodigy it is also refreshing to see her actually put that intellect to use. In Glass House, Claire actually utilizes her knowledge and love of books to solve a situation in order to protect her friends from trouble.

The secondary characters of Eve Rosser, Michael Glass and Shane Collins are all given personalities and histories that make them stand out. Eve, at first, comes off as typical Goth stereotype, but proves with her wit and character to be more than that. Michael is very complex with his hidden secrets about the house and his own true nature. Shane, the eventual love interest, is fascinating in his own right [thank God] with his complex story line and tragic backstory that fuels his character development.

Other interesting people that pop up during the story are Monica Morrel, Amelie [HVBIC], Oliver and a few others.

Alright, enough with the exposition, now time for the important part. The Vampires.

Personally, I find the vampires in this book to be refreshing. They are unapologetic, cruel and do not pretend to be human or care about the humans that live there. The only reason there is order, is because they realize it is better to allow humans a sense of security, than to have them rise up.

As I was reading various questions popped into my mind: How does Morganville work? How do the vampires keep power? What prevents others from coming in? Why don't people simply leave town? Thankfully this series answers all those questions and gives reasonable answers.

That being said while this book was written well and had good characters, I found it rather simple. It did not hold my attention with intense passion.

Final Grade: B

An interesting take on vampires and what it would be like for them to run a society. However, if you've already ready the early Anita Blake series or The Hollows series or the Sookie Stackhouse Mysteries this is nothing special.

I finished the first half today...(since this book has the first two books combined). It started out a bit slow and rough. I had to make myself keep reading through the first couple of chapters as it took some time to get my bearings in the story, figure out the key characters, and the basic backdrop for the series. I wanted to like this one. I really did. It seemed like it was made for me. Morganville? Morgan? You can't ignore the connection. But sadly I was disappointed.

I strongly disliked Claire. Very strongly. I mean, what was the purpose of making her 16? To make her even more annoying?? She was immature and whiny and......*simmers down*. In the second book, all the other characters were like "Oh, what happened to the little mousy girl?", I would go "She's right here guys. Just because its a new book doesn't mean she underwent a personality change."

The other characters were somewhat unlikable. Out all of them, I liked Michael the best. I wish he could have been the love interest. Which brings me to Shane......I just don't get his appeal. He's just some hotheaded "gorgeous" guy. I don't like him. I wish he would have been torched. Him and Claire were just so awkwardly matched. It seemed forced to me. After little to no interaction, Claire is all up in his lap calling him her boyfriend (although that didn't stop her from going on that date with Ian). The romance between them was gag-worthy, honestly. The whole "let's play baseball thing". Yuck. And of course they can't really do it, because of the age difference. Gotta build up that sexual tension.

And, sorry for all the people who liked this series, I'm going to be hatin' on the writing now. It was bad. Real bad. It didn't make any sense. It was in third person, but wanted to be in first person. Pick a POV already!!! I had the most difficul time trying to figure out who was speaking or acting at any given time. And Caine would put random words in italics to prove a point. They were everywhere.

And some of the action didn't have a purpse. It seems Caine would just get bored and go "hhhmmmm, let's go over here now so we can over-complicate things!!"

The main problem was I never was emotionally invested enough. I didn't care what happened. It never held me in suspense. I was just waiting for it to be over.(less)

I’m writing this review for the first book because I’ve read the first three books in a week. I just picked up the book at Walmart because I have a problem with buying books and due to the fact that I didn’t have a book in my purse at the moment, which I also have a problem with feeling like I need to have a book wherever I go. I have issues, I know!

But I really enjoyed this series. I couldn’t put it down. Claire can’t stay out of trouble and I can’t stop reading about her getting into trouble....more
