(Translation of title: The shadow on the stone bench)
I remember reading this as a child. I remember being blown away by the intrigue, the mystery surrounding Carolin. I'm not sure if I read it more than a couple of times at the most since it was hard to get all 4 volumes of the series from the library at the same time.

This book is told from the point of view of Berta, a 14-year old girl living together with her parents, her older brother Roland and younger brother Nadja and their housekeeper Sve

I'm not that into young adult literature (at all actually), but overall I liked the idea in this, and that it's set at the beginning of the 20th century. The execution was unsatisfying. The bits where characters argued about women's rights and were sad about Titanic felt out of place, like Gripe definitely wanted something to scream the time period, but couldn't decide where to put them so she jammed them somewhere where they seemed to fit. They didn't. The characters were also unlikeable and so ...more
Den ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
3,48 stars.
Sooo the story was hooking, the characters were deep and the writing style was really enjoyable. And the whole thing was psychological, which I always like in books.

This book is the first one in a following (fantastic) series of four books. Maria Gripe is so good at creating characters. It is almost like she never created them, as they all were real living people in our reality. The characters sound a bit cliche here, but oddly, they are not.

The book is quite easy to read, which makes the experience very comfortable. There are a lot of "space" to fold out your thoughts in the series. Maria gives you an opportunity to look at situations from other perspecti

Maria Gripen Varjo-sarja on ihana: rakastan jo pelkästään kirjojen kauniita nimiä ja salaperäisiä kansia, ihania ja moniulotteisia hahmoja, 1910-luvun Ruotsin ajankuvausta, hieman mystistä tunnelmaa... Lisäksi tästä sarjasta tuntuu löytävän uusia puolia jokaisella lukukerralla.

Ihastuin Salaisuus varjossa -kirjaan jo ensimmäisellä lukukerralla, vaikka se ei ylläkään mielestäni aivan kahden seuraavan kirjan tasolle. Yksinkertaisesta, jopa arkisesta, kielestä huolimatta Maria Gripe luo taitavasti a

My friend Julia recommended this book for me since it's one of her favourite books. I really enjoyed the way Maria Gripe described the atmosphere in Sweden before First World War; the fear of the future and what is coming next. The translation (Finnish one) that I read was a really bad one, though, and I am little bit disappointed that I didn't enjoy the book as much as I would have liked to enjoy. I can't decide whether it was because of the translation or the book in general. The book, however ...more

Maria Gripe, born Maja Stina Walter (25 July 1923, Vaxholm, Uppland – 5 April 2007, Rönninge), was a Swedish author of books for children and young people, often written in a magical and mystical tone. In 1946 she married the artist Harald Gripe, who created cover illustrations for most of her books. His illustration career, in fact, began in connection with his wife's debut as author of I vår lil ...more
