I’m a huge fan of Pamela Clare’s I-Team romantic suspense series, I love hot highlander heroes, I’m fascinated by pre-Revolutionary American history, and I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things about Surrender from several GR friends. Surrender is my first Pamela Clare book, and I liked so much that I ordered the next in the series, Untamed. While the plot isn’t terribly unique, the setting is. These “Highlanders” are living in the colonies, fighting for Britain against the French and the Native Americans. They belong to an elite military group called The Rangers, with Iain MacKinnon as their leader. He’s honorable, strong, independent, and rebellious and not someone you can easily manipulate. Iain is an alpha male in every sense of the word and when he wants something, he always finds a way to get it, as Annie found out when he set his sights on her.

Annie is your typical spunky female who demands propriety in all things – when it suits her. The last few years have been difficult for her when, after her father and brothers’ deaths in battle, she and her mother, out of necessity, have to go live with her uncle. He is an intense man who demands obedience in all things – especially the bedroom – where his sexual appetites run to the darker extremes. When Annie witnesses her mother’s death at the hands of her uncle, Annie runs away, only to be found, imprisoned and shipped to the colonies where she becomes an indentured servant. Circumstances arise that cause Annie’s and Iain’s paths to cross, literally. This is when the story really takes off.

In addition to Iain, we have Conner and Morgan MacKinnon, Iain’s brothers by blood, and Joseph, Iain’s Native American brother by choice. All of the males in this story are alpha and very worthy of their own books.

While I truly did enjoy both Annie and Iain, what surprised me was how intriguing I found Lord William Wentworth, this story’s antagonist. He has blackmailed Iain and his brothers into serving the British crown in this war by threatening to have them hanged on false charges of murder. His actions, his motivations and his demeanor remind of another favorite “bad good-guy,” Jonas Wyatt from Lora Leigh’s Breeds series. As in Jonas’ case, I’m dying to read Lord William’s story! Some of the interactions between Lord William and the brothers are laugh out loud funny and among my favorite moments from this book.

Overall, I enjoyed this first book in the series and I’m thrilled to have found a new Highlander voice in Pamela Clare!

One day while she is in the barn milking the cow, she hears gun shots and screaming. Realizing that Indians and French are attacking the farm, she goes out the back of the barn and runs through the snow toward the woods. The attack party sees her and pursues her through the forest, intent on raping and killing her. She slips down a rocky slope where the men finally catch up to her but she doesn't give up and keeps on fighting. Just as she is about to be hurt, a big man comes out of the woods and kills all of the men attacking her.

Iain MacKinnon is an exhiled Scot whose family immigrated to colonial New York after losing everything at Culloden. His grandfather was The MacKinnon, laird over his lands until the Argyll Campbells and English defeated his clan at Culloden, killing women and children as well as wounded men. Iain and his brothers Morgan and Conner grew up on the frontier, learning how to hunt and track along with their Indian friends, the Muheconneok. Iain was pressed into service for the British crown after a British Colonel accuses him of a murder he didn't commit then offers him a choice of starting a Ranger company for the Crown or hanging. Since Iain was a Catholic Jacobite, he knew the courts would not listen to him over a British Colonel so he was forced to lead a company of Rangers who fought for the British along with his two brothers who joined with him.

Major Iain MacKinnon is on a scouting mission to Fort Ticonderoga under orders to move swiftly to keep from being seen. He is not supposed to help any colonials under attack because it would give away the location of his company of Rangers. He sees Annie running through the forest and has to make a terrible decision, to save her from being raped and killed which will bring danger to his men because the shooting will bring the French and Abenaki to their position, or let her be killed and follow his orders. Iain is an honorable man who cannot stand to see such a courageous woman harmed in front of him, so he makes the fateful decision to send the rest of the scouting party away and save her on his own.

Iain saves Annie's life but she is hurt from running through the woods barefoot. He carries her on his back through the woods trying to ahead of the large force of Abenaki on their tail who want vengeance for the men he killed saving her. Iain vows to keep her safe and carries her for the next few days on his back, always just ahead of the Abenaki. Annie realizes that no one knows who she is and she could be free from her indentured service if no one finds out. She tells Iain that her name is Annie Burns because she is afraid he will hate her if he finds out that she is an Argyll Campbell.

They reach the fort where Iain is sentenced to 100 lashes for saving her life. Annie tries to get the British officer to relent but he refuses. After being whipped, Annie nurses Iain back to health. They both have feelings for each other but fight the attraction for different reasons. Iain is stuck in the Rangers until the end of the war and does not have anything to offer a wife until he can take over his farm again. Annie cannot sleep with Iain because he will find her brand and know she lied to him. But the passion between them refuses to go away and eventually ignites, leaving Iain and Annie to come to terms with the consequences.

Surrender is a beautiful love story full of action, adventure and passion. Iain MacKinnon is one of the best heroes I have ever read - honorable, protective and caring toward Annie and revered by his men. He does so much for Annie, from carrying her on his back for days after saving her life to doing everything he can to keep her safe from those who would do her harm. Annie was a sweet girl who deserved the protection she gets from Iain after being betrayed by those closest to her and shipped from a life of privilege to a very different life on the frontier. The passion between Iain and Annie is intense and wonderful. The romance in the book just makes you feel good because it's so beautiful. If you like the movie and setting of Last of the Mohicans, you will enjoy this book. The characters and setting of this book come to life and take you on a great romantic adventure. I have read this book three times and enjoyed it more every time. Surrender has earned it's place as my favorite historical romance book.(less)

It seems like I'm falling onto books which are good enough but not completely rocking my world. Surrender is good. I'm happy that I read it. I will definitely read on in the series. I loved this book, but then, as a historical romance reader, it is definitely my cuppa tea. I was a bit worried, as every one of my GR friends loves her contemporary love stories; could she make the transition? With a resounding yes, I must say she did! And then some.

So to start off, this was the best, hands down historical romance to ever grace pages/kindles/ereaders/nooks yadda yadda! It literally pooped all over everything else – no offense to other historical authors! And you know what is really bad? The amount of time it took me to actually start reading the book, oops... I think my gal pals Rhonda and Elena are going to be rounding me up with the spankings for my dilly dallying.

First, let’s talk about my new conquest in husband material – Iain MacKinnon. He is a hero to top all heroes. Oh, swoon....he is perfecto! Brave, kind, sexy, honourable, well hung, loving, tall, hair to rival a woman’s, tat’s!!! And if I don’t stop now the review will go on much longer than needed. My new boy toy, Iain was forced into serving the British Army after being accused of a crime that he didn’t commit. After being at war for three years Iain and his equally sexy, drool worthy band of Rangers stumble across a stunner of a lady about to be grievously raped by Abenaki Indians, and going against protocol, rushed to the aide of the woman.

Meet, Annie Burns – or as my Kindle kept calling her, Annie Bums (hehehe). This poor, poor woman, I just want to give her a big ol’ hug. How much hardship can one soul endure! She has forced to endure betrayal of the worst kind after being sold be her (excuse the cussing) asshole of an Uncle into indentureship and sent to America (Americas). But one sunny morning, a little ray of sunshine came splashing her way, in the form of Iain (back of my man lady!!)

This book was just P.E.R.F.EC.T. It had everything a girl could want in a romance. And what made it all that much more perfect? Iain wasn’t some lavishly rich Earl from Timbuktu or wherever, he was a just an ordinary man with ordinary dreams, who knew how to make a girl quiver.... yes, I still am.

I thought the I team series was good, but HAWT dayum. Spank me on the arse and call me Hanky, this was FANTASTIC. (less)

Another OUTSTANDING read from Pamela Clare!!!!

I first came to know this author through her romantic suspense series, "I-Team". This is my first HR read by her, and once again she has exceeded my expectations!!! I am impressed by Clare’s versatility. Some authors that write multiple genres seem to be better at one than the other, this is not the case here. I couldn't pick one over the other.
And I have not yet met an author more gracious than she.

Loved this book. What an amazing introduction to a wonderful series. I'm sure I'll just adore every book on it as all the MacKinnon brothers are way too hot, I just need to read everything about them all. I'm happy to find a new fav and on this genre, probably because it has been too long since I got this hooked with a historical romance book.

I had my doubts about this book even though readers raved about it. I read Clare’s Carnal Gift, thought it was really poor and wrote her off as a two-bit writer that I wouldn’t try again. Well talk about a 360 here! This book is so vivid and well-written with a beautiful hero that I am sooo happy I have the next one (Untamed) and another from her other series.

Who would ever think that putting a Highlander on the Colonial frontier would work. Well not only does it work it’s the kind of book that you find yourself getting lost in until there’s some noise that takes you out of the story. You can see the Rangers working at the fort and you can see the mean British Lord William in charge making their lives hard. Then there’s the love story that just had me going **sigh sigh**. There is this one part that I was reading in a public area and I had to close the book because I started getting tears in my eyes –did a little coughing to cover that up and make it look like a cold was coming on (lol!) ;) So not only can you see the story unfold, you can feel it, and those two things together are what make it well-worth the read.

The Gaelic is done well too. A translation is provided for the most part right after each sentence and the accent is consistent throughout the book. Now you might say, ‘who cares about that’, well I think it adds to the believability of the story and the overall sexiness of the hero ;-)

There are some very gruesome parts in the story too as well as steamy, steamy sex! There is this one sex scene that is very far from historical romance and seems to skirt with erotica IMO. The relief you feel when the h/h get together is way up there! As for the other Rangers, they will charm the socks right off you. They’re all so protective of the heroine too. There are some very touching scenes between these men that you just wouldn’t expect with background characters.

So it’s an original story because of the characters and their setting and just an “oh-wow” heart skipping a beat here kind of hero (ah Iain) –good luck NOT loving this one :)(less)

"Wee German princeling" I had to laugh at this every time it was said. What a neat adventure book set in the colonial frontier, 1757. Lady Anne was betrayed by her sick and twisted uncle and sold as an indentured servant to the colonies. Iain MacKinnon (rival Scottish clan) rescued her and the sparks began to simmer.

At first, I didn't care for "Annie" and even Iain "almost" blew it, but these two bloomed with the story and it developed into a wonderful rose in the end. Beautiful tale of love, c...more

After my enjoyable reading experience with Pamela Clare's Ride the Fire, I was told that I simply must read Surrender. Whew man, am I glad I listened to everyone!

Although forced to serve the British during the French and Indian War, Iain MacKinnon does his job well. He and his band of Rangers have had much success but when Iain spies the courage of one beauty about to be ravaged by the Abenaki Indians, he defies his superiors and leaves to rescue her.

This one lives up to the hype. A very good, romantic story in a unique setting.

I love historical romance, and I'm not bothered by the typical locations/time frames. I like Regencies just fine, for example. But this story is set in the colonial American frontier and has a real "Last of the Mohicans" vibe, which is really a refreshing change. And, no, the hero wasn't a secret duke, either.

Iain MacKinnon and Lady Anne Campbell are really nice leads. I liked the way their romance progressed, although it certainly happened quickly. Their chemistry was very good and their moments of mistake and/or misunderstanding were not TSTL, but usually manipulated by an outside force, or by their own desire to save the other pain.

The featured and side characters were very good. The villain was awful and nasty and dealt with nicely. There's an anti-hero that I want to hate, but Clare keeps pulling the rug out from under that one, and I really don't know what to expect from him in the future. Which is a good thing, I think.

I did have a problem with a couple of parts. There was something in particular that Iain did that I thought was not a good plan, considering the laws and his desire to protect Annie. But it was a minor speed bump, really.

The battle scenes were difficult to read, mainly because they were well-told. A horrible loss due to an arrogant general -- I just wanted to reach through the pages and strangle the man myself.

My biggest problem with this book is not at all the fault of the author or the story. It's the Kindle version. There was a typo in every other paragraph, I swear. Misspelled words and missing or misplaced punctuation. How am I supposed to keep my mind on the story if I'm translating the whole time. What does "recatt" mean? Well, it means "recall" when spelled properly. So many things were like that. The most annoying one was the word "lain". Consistently it was replaced with the hero's name: "Iain". You look at them here and say -- why would that bother her? Well, the font doesn't make the "i" and the "L" look the same, so it's very clearly the man's name rather than a version of "lay". Okay -- that was a rant. But seriously, you could probably make a comedy album reading the typos in this thing. Shoddy, shoddy work.

However, the story surpasses that problem and I don't know if the PB is typo-riddled, so you might consider buying that if you think translating occasional nonsense words might bother you.

Now, I'm on to the next in the series, "Untamed", and looking forward to it.

ETA: The reason I didn't give this one five stars was because of the odd blip I mentioned above and also because I thought she padded the story with a few unnecessary sex scenes. They're well written, but a couple of them are unnecessary, and I actually skimmed over them. I can think of two that truly enhanced the story, but the others, IMO, were superfluous. (less)

I believe this is the very first Historical Romance I’ve truly enjoyed. Ms. Clare has delivered a love story that will sweep you off your feet and make you fall in love with its characters, villains included. There is so much to say about this book and I found it difficult to write it. I actually wrote a two page review including a synopsis but then I thought there’s so many of those already. Another fabulous pre-Revolutionary frontier romance from Pamela Clare. I love these books! The hero is wonderful - a real hero, who is honorable, intelligent, kind, loyal and protective. Sigh. The heroine is also really great. I enjoyed the beginning (up until they arrive at Fort Edward) and the ending better than the middle section. It got too dark and unpleasant. Pamela Clare is a favorite author, but I prefer her contemporary I-Team series. My favorites are Unlawful Contact and Skin Deep.

Surrender is the first book in the MacKinnon’s Ranger Trilogy and is set during the French and Indian War in America. Each book in the Series tells the story of one of the brothers, Iain, Morgan & Conner. They are displaced Scottish Highlanders, raised amongst the Mahican Indians. With this background we get a special breed of men, those with fierce Scots courage and the stealth and cunning fighting abilities of their Indian brothers. They, along with many other talented Scots, form a unique team of warriors. These special men are known as MacKinnon’s Rangers.

Surrender is the story of Iain MacKinnon and the woman who calls herself Annie Burns. When Iain is falsely accused of murder, he along with the Rangers, are forced to serve the hated British Crown. Now let me tell you my lassies that Iain MacKinnon is one hot, sexy Highland Warrior. I loved him from the get go and think I will love him forever! Who could not love a man of his caliber? For he is filled to the brim and spilling over with all the alpha male attributes that I love!

During a scouting operation, Iain comes across lovely Annie, who is facing certain death at the hands of the Abenaki Indians and French soldiers who had raided her home. As she fights for her life, Iain’s honor and compassion win the battle over his orders. Risking the lives of his brothers and fellow Rangers, he saves her from certain torture and death. Facing punishment for his choices he brings an injured Annie back to the British camp. And there she recognizes the British leader, Lord William. Will he recognize her?

Annie is one of those heroines with true grit, full of courage and the will to survive. Having survived the harrowing indignities of her uncle and witnessing the brutal murder of those she worked for, she now finds herself faced with new challenges. For Annie is hiding secrets from her past and weaves a web of lies to protect herself. Lord William and Iain both recognize that she is lying. Both are becoming more enamored of her as they try to unravel those secrets. Yet, there is this hot, sizzling, dripping sexual heat and chemistry that exist between Iain and Annie. The sexual charge is hot enough to blow up the entire British camp and the love scenes are sweltering!

And so we find in the midst of the brutalities of war and survival in pre-Revolutionary America, a beautifully written, poignant, and sensual love story filled with vivid historical events, action and danger. This is such a compelling story and one that I loved from beginning to end. Pamela Clare has that special talent that puts you right in the midst of it all. It's as if you are there, completely and totally immersed; with heart palpitating and breath held. It's more than reading a book, you are living this story and enthralled!

Not only is this one a definite keeper but it goes into my “desert-island must” category and one that will be read again and again. I am so excited to read a Historical Romance series with an American Colonial setting. Being a History lover, I must confess that when finished, my interest was piqued and I found myself devouring all the information I could find on this war and this location.

I wasn't a fan of romantic historical war stories before i started this book...aannnndddd...i'm still not! ;) I'm just really not a history buff so the parts that were detailing the French/Indian and British war really held no interest for me, however, all the interactions between the Rangers, the MacKinnon brothers AND Iain and Annie were WONDERFUL!! I just LOVE Pamela Clare's storytelling and her romance which is why i have every intention of continuing on with this series!

What a shock--another 5 star review for a Pamela Clare novel! Here I thought she couldn't top her romantic suspense I-Team series but she comes damn close with this first novel in her historical romance series MacKinnon's Rangers. I really enjoyed the setting for this romance novel. It reminded me a bit of Gabaldon's Outlander series. But the resemblence to those books ended at the setting.

I also thought the plot was rather interesting, up to a point. It eventually became tedious and too fraught with horrible and melodramatic circumstances.

Seldom have I read a historical romance where the history and romance are so deftly intertwined. There was no "information dump" that many authors fall into nor was it a "pseudo historical" where the basic setting is the only thing historical about it.
