Stick a fork in me, folks…I’m done. My relationship with the Dresden Files has officially hit rock bottom.

This is one review I've been dreading to write, both because A LOT of my friends passionately love these books, and because there are so many aspects of the series that are praise-worthy and enjoyable. The world-building is terrific, the magic system is well constructed, and there are host of likeable supporting characters, such as Thomas, Kincaid, Bob, Michael, Ebenezer...just to name a fe...more

Despite the fact that this book needed an editor to point out places where the character gets up from a chair twice in the same paragraph without ever sitting down again or when he eats 3 breakfasts at three different places while seeing a doctor at the last minute between the last two (er, what time is breakfast at the last place?) without ever even mentioning he was full... Okay I'm going to pause there and add a period because even though that isn't a complete sentence, it's too dang long.

One of the best opening scenes for a Dresden novel yet, Dresden is fleeing for his life, carrying a box of puppies, and being chased by purple monkey demons that fling flaming poo. Awesome. Just awesome.

Well, I'm definitely glad that I stuck it out through the first couple of books in this series, as it's just moving from strength to strength now. By this, the sixth book, the cast of characters is well developed and one that we've grown quite attached to. As such it was wonderful to have Murphy play such a prominent role in this one and took get a better look into her life. Harry's life also opened up some more and some very significant events took place. Thomas has always been a favorite, so I...more
I first heard of the Dresden Files when the Sci Fi Channel made a show about it. I watched all the episodes, and no, it wasn't the greatest show, but I was intrigued and hoped that it would come back a little cleaned up (I believe it's been canceled.) It turns out my parents are big fans of the books, so I thought I'd give them a try.
I should say that I read a couple of the books already, I think #1 and #3, both of which I thought were decent. Not great, but not bad either. This is not a series...more

Blood Rites by Jim Butcher
"Hell's Bells" count: 19 [1:]
As far as I know, The Dresden Files is an open-ended series that Butcher will continue to write until he decides to end it, which is fine with me. He's set up a universe that has endless possibilities to it, from simple mysteries to humorous romps to soul-searing betrayal and heartache. Can't go wrong with all that, and if Butcher wants to just keep putting out Dresden books every eighteen months or so, I'll happily keep buyi...more

1/26/11-1/30/11:
These Jim Butcher books just fly when you listen to them on audio. Especially when you realize the reason James Marsters sounded like a heavily sedated life long druggie talking to you through a tin can was because somehow your ipod was set on slower. Once the audio book was set to normal again, all was well. Everyone said that this book was a turning point and it totally was. (view spoiler)...more
Butcher's series is almost good enough that it doesn't count as a guilty pleasure. He outdoes himself with wisecracking in the opening pages, and seems to have reined in some excesses: our hero isn't made stupid by his uncontrolled emotions quite as often, although his knee-jerk so-called chivalry is still a bit much.
To get his next level-up as a writer, Butcher is gonna have to learn not to interrupt action sequences with lengthy explanatory exposition.

This book in the Dresden Files series was just as good as its predecessors - at least as far as Butcher's writing skills go. The characters who return are all that we have come to expect of them, plus a few nice, juicy revelations that make them even better (by which I mean more complex). In some ways this book feels like a diversion or a slow point after the last three books which were so wonderful and fast-paced and generally dealing with the same plot in some fashion. I have a feeling that th...more
Blood Rites is the sixth of the Harry Dresden series books written by Jim Butcher. Harry Dresden is a fictional character, a wizard who works on paranormal cases in Chicago as a private detective. He has a wry sense of humor, sarcastic banter, and a host of unusual characters that are friends that he calls to help him when he needs help on a case.

A friendly White Court vampire Thomas asked Harry Dresden to take a job of protecting a movie producer who seems to be a target of a dark force trying to kill him. It seemed to be simple enough until people start dropping dead left and right under a very unusual circumstances (how is about being hit by a car while water skiing?).
The book starts on a very humorous note, but became much darker afterwards. It gives some insight on Harry's family and mentors. It also has the best portrayal (so far)...more

Another fantastic installment to The Dresden Files! Blood Rites was a brilliant read! I loved every moment of it! I didn’t see Thomas’s secret coming so it caught me off guard (which is a good thing). Aww, the fact that Harry isn’t alone anymore makes up for all the troubles he went through (well, almost anyway). There were so many kick-ass moments in this book that I loved. The raid of the Black Court’s lair was awesome! Harry, Murphy, Kincaid and Ebenezar worked together very well. I’m still n...more

You gotta love The Dresden Files' opening scenes. Harry Dresden running with a box of puppies, dodging burning poo thrown by purple demon chimps. This book had me from the very start.
There were a few hilarious moments of Harry working in an adult film production, but unfortunately the book used the best entertainment in the beginning and the middle and end were rather bland. Not bad, but not as captivating as I've come to expect from the Dresden Files books.

Wow! I never could have imagined that I might truly enjoy a book about vampires and wizards, but this book made me laugh, gasp and grimace.
Setting the scene in Chicago, my hometown, certainly had a positive impact during the read and influenced my even choosing to buy this book. Of course, it was on sale at Audible.com for $4.95 so the deal was sealed.

The Story: Harry Dresden is up to his duster collar in trouble once again as he takes on the King of the White Court and a host of lesser enemies, monsters and baddies. This time around it is personal as there is a connection between the King and Harry’s mother. Add to this another revelation regarding family and we have a pot-boiling adventure. Oh and did I mention that he gets to work for a porn movie producer? I let your imagination run with that one.

I really enjoy the Harry Dresden series. Jim Butcher does a great job of smoothly combining humour and drama in a way that keeps the excitment and apprehension about whether Harry will survive another day at fever pitch, but without making things so heavy [what with the constant risk of imminent world destruction and his own painful death nothwithstanding] that you get depressed and don't want to keep reading.

Blood Rites, or as I like to call it, “Harry Finally Get a Break,” is an excellent addition to the series.
The Vampires, this time White and Black Courts, are once again at the heart of the plot. I have to admit that confronting vampires is becoming a little old hat, but the fact that we’re going up against different courts with different rules keep thing fresh. Moreover, the dichotomy between the more human Whites and the monstrous Blacks serves to –no pun intended– color the background of the s...more

This the last Harry Dresden book I am reading. For a while, while I enjoyed them I am not sure I want a steady diet of them.
This book is full of entropy curses, sorcery, demons, vampires, old enemies, new enemies, old friends, wizards, mercenaries and puppies. Yes I said puppies.
Harry gets a job to protect a film crew from an "Evil Eye", mixed in with the film crew are the White Vampires, which brings in his old friend (?)...more

The best thing about this book is the moment when Dresden opens his mouth and straight-up feminist theory comes out. The second best thing about this book is that it has a puppy in it. No wait, the second best thing about this book is that Murphy kicks ass, which bumps the puppy down to third best thing.
The worst thing about this book are the overwrought dun Dun DUN plot twists. At times it got downright melodramatic. It gets props for being self-aware while it was being melodramatic, but still...more

The war between the White Council and the Red Court of the vampires continued to rage (in fact, it seems to include all 3 courts of vampires) and Harry Dresden remains at the heart of it as well as maintaining his limited income doing what jobs he can as Chicago's only wizard in the yellow pages.
Harry's life remains excitingly complicated. The Black Court is in town, perhaps the most dangerous and magical of the vampires and his old enemy Mavra is gunning for him with her followers. He has to ta...more

This one started out slow but I actually ended up enjoying it as it picked up a decent pace mid-way through. Having had ups and downs with this series I was a bit wary when I was already fifty pages in and still wondering if anything was going to happen. I am glad I was pleasantly surprised. Since this book could almost be read as a stand alone and the fact that there are so many of them I won't be doing a recap.

I finally read this one and have ambivalent feelings about it.
This book is the introduction to the White Court of vampires and, also, a turning point in the series in several ways. Unfortunately, portions of it take place on the set of a porn film. Ew. Exactly why I was reluctant to read it in the first place.
That's right. Harry's sometimes ally Thomas Raith recruits Harry to find out why women on the set of a skin flick are dying under mysterious circumstances. Not only that, but Harry discover...more

This was my least favorite Dresden book yet.
That said, it was still awesome. Harry Dresden is fast becoming my favorite fictional character. His wisecracking sarcastic sense of humor hits a chord with me. I would love to know this guy in person.
In Blood Rites we meet a new edition to Harry's group of friends, Mouse. I look forward to seeing this adorable character develop. We also learn a VERY interesting tid-bit about Harry's family. The plot thickens. All action and magic wielding are superb....more

Okay, so... the first and second time we met Thomas (over the entire course of the Dresden Files series), I in NO WAY associated those two meetings with the same person. They flat out weren't. The character was written in such a dramatically different way as to make me do a double take when Thomas B referenced events that Thomas A had been involved in.
Now that Thomas is a major character settled into being just ONE character, I like him a whole lot more. I'm also beginning to like Murphy more, e...more

I am now firmly convinced that Mr. Butcher has great plans for Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard. In "Blood Rites" the focus of the narrative has undergone a significant shift from its original focus on Harry barely managing to survive his encounters with a growing number of enemies to Harry and his friends learning what the costs of survival really are. The character developments are steady and interesting. Please notice the plural, "developments." Harry is no longer the only on...more
Being the first ever Jim Butcher book I'd read, it makes me wonder why I had just read his work just now.

A martial arts enthusiast whose resume includes a long list of skills rendered obsolete at least two hundred years ago, Jim Butcher turned to writing as a career because anything else probably would have driven him insane. He lives in Independence, Missouri, with his wife, his son, and a ferocious guard dog.
