THE HIDDEN CHILD is the fifth book centred around the summer tourist town of Fjallbacka on the west coast of Sweden featuring police detective Patrik Hedstrom and his true-crime writing wife Erica Falck. In this outing Patrik is starting paternity leave to look after the couple’s daughter Maja while Erica is looking forward to getting back to work and engaging in more adult intellectual pursuits after a year of looking after Maja herself. However when a dead body is discovered in town on the fir

The only disappointing thing about this book was that it had to end and I don't think there is another one due for a while. This in my opinion, was her best todate. The story is taken up where the last book left off, with Erica deciding she wants to know more about her mother, a woman who was so distant towards her daughters, they had a strained relationship with her right up to her death. Erica found a box in the attic containing a childs shirt and a Nazi medal, so at the beginning of "The

Hidden Child was a beautifully written and well thought out book. I was both disapointed and happy to discover it is part of a series. Whilst some other books in a series presume prior knowledge and effectively give away everything that happened in the previous books, Hidden Child does not so I cannot wait to have the pleasure of reading the previous books.

Brilliant book. In my recent readings I have become a little irritated with crime novels with what I perceive to be predictable outcomes and thinly veiled twists. However, this novel restored my faith in the abilities of the crime genre to surprise and keep the reader hooked. From the outset I was fascinated by the hints at a long forgotten mystery that needed to be solved because of its relation to a current crime.

What a fabulous book. I loved the characters and learning about Sweden and Norway's involvement in WWII was really interesting. I was caught up in the mystery from moment one and couldn't figure out what was going on until the very last few pages when everyone else in the book figured it all out.

If you haven't discovered Swedish crime sensation Camilla Lackberg yet, you are in for a treat. Her first three books, in order are:
The Stonecutter
The Preacher
Gallow's Bird
Had I known, I would have begun with the trilogy in order, but the first book I happened upon was Gallow's Bird, then I found The Ice Princess, her fourth. Both have recurring characters and it doesn't really matter what order you read them in as the crimes/mysteries stand on their own. The crimes More...

I was very much looking forward to this book but in the end completely disappointed by it. I don't know if it was the translation but I found the language to be extremely irritating. It was far too simple and lacked any complex sentences. A child could have written them. The book itself was written from the point of view of far too many characters who were given too little page space at a time. It meant that they had very little beyond the surface for the first half of the book and blended into

This book really has some twists and turns in it that will leave you shocked. I love the way this book moves from 1945 to the present day flawlessly and really keeps you gripped on the action revealing the smallest of snippits that leave you still wondering about the initial murder or Erik Frankel that we see really early on in the novel.

Another installment of the Patrik Hedstrom series. These are becoming essential to get me through a long night shift - gripping enough to keep me awake, light enough not to require too much concentration when I'm feeling sleepy, easy enough that I can put it down in the middle of a chapter when I get bleeped to go and do a job and can easily pick up the thread of things again when I get back. This one was much better than number 4 in my opinion (The Gallows Bird) but not as well crafted as the f

I enjoyed this, but found it fairly standard fare. I guessed who killed the old man pretty early on, and the other plot twists were a bit disappointing, except for one that was really clever and psychologically complex. But the psychology of some of the other characters didn't totally ring true, notably the female protagonist's mother. I agree with whoever on here found the language too simple - it made for a fast read, but it was unimpressive. I liked the different viewpoints, and the details o

This is the first book by Camilla Lackberg that I have read, but it won't be the last because I really enjoyed it. It's really a standard crime book where the chief protagonaists are a police officer and his wife who is a journalist. The characters in it are really well written and likeable, although they are all human and have their faults. In this book, the journalist, Erika, is trying to find out more about her mother who was killed in a car crash four years previously. She finds a Nazi m

I have to shamefully admit I wasn't excited about this book when I started it. I was really disappointed that my favorite author would make a 500 page book out of something so simple: Erica gives a Nazi medal to a man for appraisal; the man then turns up dead. I thought that the obvious connection would be someone killed him and stole the medal, but then a few pages later Erica is given back her medal... To say there is more to the story is barely doing it justice.

I enjoyed this book admittedly having some questions about yet another Swedish crime writer purported to be the new sensation. Turns out that Camilla Lackberg has written a number of other books and I would be very interested in reading them as well. She was able to craft a finely tuned crime novel without it being reduced to a police procedural which others are wont to do. The characters were nicely developed and the writing really flowed. It was an enjoyable read with enough twists, turns

Maybe I've grown older, or just read a lot more books since the last of Camilla Läckberg's, but I really did not enjoy this one as much as the previous. What I don't like is the very one-sided description of all the characters. Also, this book changes perspective between a lot of different characters, yet every one of them narrates with exactly the same voice and language, even using the same expressions and adjectives to describe each other. Often the problems are described in the most cliché-l

Läckberg is back again, this time with the fifth book bearing the title “the young German” or in Danish “tyskerungen”.
Falck did not need to go outside the house to find a mystery to dig forward. This time it’s about family articles. Since the book #1, she was already intrigued with her deceased mom Elsy. There was no mother figure at all in the mother character and she took distance from the girls leaving Erica in charge with love and proper care to her younger sister Anna.

This was a good read for the way it advances the story of the town and Patrik and Ericka's family. The mystery wasn't that hard to figure out, but this gives us the back-story on Ericka's mother. It also is about WWII Sweden, which is interesting to me as an American since that's really not been a part of what I was taught.
Unlike the others by Lackberg, I didn't think this stood alone as well as the others. But if you're a fan of her Patrik Hedstrom series, this is a must read.

Okay, so I picked this book up in an airport bookstore since it was advertised as "If you like 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' then you'll love..." Turns out, I did really enjoy it. I found out about halfway into the book that this is actually the 5th (4th? I don't know.) book in Camilla Lackberg's series. That being said, I didn't find that I was confused or lost or missed out by not reading the other books first. They did mention a thing or two from books past but not enough to rui

This is the first of Lackberg's books that I've read and I won't be rushing to read any others, as although the plot kept me vaguely interested it had a bland back story about family life, babies and pregnancy which just didn't work within the contact of a thriller.
The main characters were one dimensional and hard to believe in. Different to some other reviewers I quite enjoyed the way the various stories wove in and out of each other, maybe this is because I haven't read many other t More...

This was a fantastic book from an author I had never read before. I did take a bit of a gamble as I actually bought this book rather than buying it from the library - half price in the book shop so I thought that it was worth a go.
This book is another translation from Sweden but is so good it is unreal. The story is set in the present with flashbacks from some of the characters to the latter part of the Second World War. It is a murder/crime book but is done really well with the plo More...

I love that she writes, so you piece it all together yourself. This book explained a lot about Ericas upbrining and it made somethings fall into place about her mother.
I think this is the best book of Camilla Läckberg - I like her way of writing, and the way she pieces a story together by small things that you have already heard something about in the previous books.
You dont have to read all the books are read them in the right order - but it sure gives you an advantance.

If I were more a fan of crime fiction, I would probably have given this a 4 or 5. I thought it was a very good story and in the second half particularly, I was quite engrossed in the plot. The characters were interesting, and I liked learning a bit about Swedish culture and what went on during WWII between Sweden and Norway.

Camilla Lackberg is turning out to be one of my favourite Scandic mystery novelists. Having read the first few books in this series, there is now fluid continuity in terms of character development. Just not sure how many more stori she can spin around this group of characters before they become slightly contrived.

Pretty good. Probably the best I've read so far, perhaps because it was not quite so gory as some. I did guess the conclusion about half the way through but I was quite happy with that. It's because the author is honest (unlike Agatha Christie where solving the murder always seems to involve using a piece of information she doesn't give you!).

These Swedish crime writers just get better and better. A convoluted tale of wartime passion and modern murder set against the backdrop of the relationship between a female crime writer and her policeman husband. It's cosy, almost comic, at times but there's an undercurrent of violence that is quite brutal.
