When you have too much sadness, the magic drowns in it, like people in water.  If you think things hard enough, they become true.  But if you have sadness inside, all that comes out of your head is sadness.  (p. 35)

Sometimes a book finds you at the right time.  That's what happened to me with Silvana de Mari's The Last Dragon.  I was in the middle of reading this book when I lost a friend of mine to her own mental illness.  It was exactly the book I needed at that time.

Translated from the Italian -- prose is beautifully done, would love to be able to read the original Italian. A story in two parts. Yorsh (short for Yorshkrunsquarkljolnerstrink) is a little elf, one born lately, alone in a world where elves are persecuted. Indeed, he is the last elf. A young woman and a hunter gradually befriend him, helping him follow his father's last instructions and make his way to the last dragon. They find him in a cave filled with books -- the accumulation of the world's More...

Title: The Last Dragon
Author: Silvana De Mari
Part 1: Brief Summary
This book is about an Elf with an enormous dragon, saving the world from a dark age. The elf meets new people in part 1 he meets, 2 people that was very important, the hunter and Sajra; in part 2 he meets Robi and other people like the villagers.
There were few problems like how to get food or where to find a home.
Throughout the book, Yorsh the elf learns lots of things to defeat the Dark Age. In More...

This is a two and half star book. Though there were elements I liked about the book there was also other elements I didn't like. For a children's fantasy I found the book too dark and depressing. It spends a long time with people being mean to each other. The book also dwells on death. The ending was also disappointing because I was hoping and expecting more of a fairy tale. It wasn't the ending was awful but, I was hoping for more especially with the build up. It was akin to Victor Hugo' More...

The Last Dragon by Silvana DeMari is a good pick for the 4-6 grades: Attention elf and dragon lovers! Here is a book for you! Yorsh is a young elf… just a baby really. He is wandering the earth looking for food and shelter. A woman comes to his aide and shares her food with him, even though there are strict laws against harboring elves. The two of them soon find themselves in trouble and are rescued by a hunter. The elf accidentally sees an ancient prophecy written on a wall saying that th More...

I enjoyed this book very much. The prose seem simple, but they fit perfectly with the impressions I developed of what an elf's thought processes were like. Simplicity presents the most direct method of understanding the world and humans have apparently lost that understanding. Now it is up to the last elf to give that understanding back to humanity. There is a surprising amount of commentary on political corruption and the hardships of people trapped under a forced dictatorship. Some people More...

MILDRED BATCHELDER HONOR BOOK (2007)

Format: Audio CD
Age level: Middle school
Protagonist: Yorsh, an elf
Translated from Italian

Brief Summary: The story started out with potential. However, it pretty much ended at Part I. Part II took place 13 years later, and it was like re-starting the book all over again, instead of building on Part I.
It's possible that 9 hours of audio was just too much for me, but the story got a little boring. The author was More...

Now that's what I call a fantasy! It's got elves, dragons, magic, romance, Fate, even a treatise on how to name the family dog from which can be extrapolated how to name the family horse. I could put it down, but only just barely. Here's hoping that more of de Mari's work gets translated.

I recently read the book "The Last Dragon" - a true work of art and perfection. The story "The Last Dragon" by Silvana de Mari is a story that takes place in a past world where mythical creatures exist. After all creatures were banished and killed, only two remained; an elf named Yorsh and an old dragon. This story is about the elf named Yorsh and his friends who go on a quest to save himself and the last dragon from extintion. This book is amazing thanks to the main characte More...

This book was about a small elf, which goes on an amazing adventure when she meets a woman in the forest. I liked the book because it was very entertaining and the descriptions of the characters were very good. What I didn’t like was the storyline; it could have been more interesting and longer. The book made me feel quite happy because some of the things the elf sad were very funny. The best part in the book was part one of the book because it was when the elf first met the woman and the man. I More...

This fantasy novel consists of alot of mystical creatures like dragons and elves. In this story, it focuses on an elf; "the last elf" named Yorsh. He is the only existing elf left and he soon discovers that he is part of a prophecy to save the world from the Dark Age. In order to prevail, he also has to find the last dragon. The dragon and the elf goes on a journey following the prophecy and changing the future. During their journey, they have to make sacrifices and risks that ends up More...

Beautifully written tale of the adventures of the last elf and the last dragon. Yorsh is the last elf and is almost dead when he is rescued by a couple of humans. Despite many hilarious misunderstandings, the humans and the elf become good friends. On their journey, Yorsh discovers a prophecy about the last elf and the last dragon joining together to save the world from a dark age.

Yorsh finds the dragon and then spends many years reading it stories about princesses. Finally, ab More...

This is a book of fantasy that, although cute, it is very touching, and lets the author discuss her feelings about the world. As the Elves move from enslaved to extinct, two humans find the last one. Even though humans are supposed to hate elves, they befriend him, saving his life.

I like how the book is written. It also has a funny but satirical look on the world of humans, which can seem ridiculous sometimes. I recommend it to anyone, kid or adult, because it is cute, funny, and touc More...

I don't remember much about it, but I do remember that my now 14 yo son liked it better than I did. I seem to remember it being a little too sweet for somebody who also likes Applegate's Everworld series, Wright's Chaos series, and Meyer's The Host.

This is absolutely the perfect fairy tale. It starts off with a hilarious relationship between two humans and a young elf, and turns out to be utterly charming and so heartwarming. Erbrow is the epitome of the medieval dragon, as is Yorsh a perfect example of what most people imagine elves to be. I thought Mari's way of portraying the main characters was comfortably set in archetypes, yet not so much so that it became cliche. Writing fiction/fantasy is a tricky business, and I admire her for com More...

This is another book I recommend over and over and over again. It is exceptional. I loved it so much, I emailed the publisher in Italy to see if she would be writing another book soon, I loved it so much. (Answer: not currently)
It's translated from Italian, so I don't know how much impact the translator has. I do know it is beautifully written, by one or both! :-)

This story had a lot going for it. Good mythology, fun characters, interesting world. It fell short by trying to do too much in too short a space. The book is marketed to 10 and up. If the publisher didn't want a longer book, it should have been a trilogy. The current book was set it two parts. The first, about Yorsh, the last elf, and the two humans he encounters and the prophecy that signals that the elf and the as-yet-unmet dragon will break the circle and the sun will shine on a land that ha More...

I was completely captivated by this wonderful little book.

The beginning is a bit grim, OK straight up grim—
Once the quest starts and the dragon is found the reader is hooked. It slowly dawns on the engaging Yorsh that he truly is the last elf, from an immensely lonely state he finds the last dragon and then the action begins. Tackling themes of racism, courage, friendship and wit, this books has been translated into many languages. Originally Italian. I eagerly await a new titl More...

Yorshkrunsquarkljolnerstri is the last elf. All the others had been sent to elf-camps, where they starved and froze to death. When the rains came, the remaining elves drowned in the floods. Yorsh's grandmother told him to go. Go, and don't look back.

Navigating a world that hates elves, Yorsh meets two human travelers who protect him, even though it brings them nothing but trouble. While escaping from jail, Yorsh sees a prophesy on a wall and knows it is about him.

I think this book is only mediocre. Sometimes it gets really slow and boring, but other times it is really good. When the old dragon flew and died, the book was good. However, when it describes things from the past, I tend to want to skip that part because it is so boring. Perhaps the book is translated from Italian, so it is harder to follow along. It had such a lame ending. The book's title is The Last Dragon, so why would the author make the dragon (Erbrow) die? I had chosen this book because More...

Here's the thing: I really, really wanted to love this book. It has elves and dragons, and it's got this fairly interesting take on prejudice and power in this other world. The elf fluctuated wildly between annoying and naive (which he should be in some ways, but not necessarily all the ways portrayed) and I couldn't necessarily move beyond what felt like pages and pages of his quest for clothes to wear. The dragon gave me the biggest pause, though, and if I'd managed to actively like the dr More...

This is a really cute book, not as in cutesy cute, but make you laugh cute.

Yorsh (His name is really Yorshkrunsquarkljolnerstrink), an elf, is the last of his...kind, you could call it, and he goes in search for the last dragon.

He is clearly young, and as he stumbles along in his story with the woman (Sajra) and the hunter (Monser), you laugh a lot, watch while Yorsh comes out of almost impossible places, and get to know the characters.

A lovely bunch. And t

I began reading this book aloud to Kelsie and ended up finishing it alone. It's a vocabulary building read, for sure, but has a little too much description for my taste. In this story, a man and a woman, Monser and Sajra, both poor, met while an elf wandering in the woods. Elves are hated by the humans, but the pair takes pity on the young elf whose innocence and compassion are monumental. The story spans 2 generations and tends to drag.

I liked the fantasy mixed with the adventure. Everything that changed this little elf throughout the whole book. He is so young at the beginning but he grows up and matures as the book goes. Also, how the story starts to tell about two different people at once. This book is great and I love it. I recommend this book to anyone that likes fantasy books.
