This book has an interesting point of view for the thriller; Black has her professional background in forensic sciences. Theresa, the protagonist, is also working with the forensics, and for this whole mystery (rather than being thrilling or to have enough suspense) she seems to be the only one who does any detective work, and that turns out to be one of the weaknesses even though it still is interesting way to access the investigation.

What?
It started out well - creepy-ish cover art, intriguing description. This is apparently the second book in a series, but I had never heard of or read the first, and to this book's credit, I don't think it's necessary to have read the first. I was expecting a fun, but thrilling, read and the forensic details of the crime scenes IS impressive. However, the narrative soon devolves into the sort of tale in which the villian(s) ultimately end up explaining their entire plan to the good ...more

Forensic investigator Theresa MacLean is still mourning her fiance who was killed 8 months ago in a bank robbery. She plods on with her job but lacks any special spark of interest. When Jillian Perry is missing (later found dead) she can't help but see the similarities between their lives. Jill's new husband seems a little off to Theresa, and she widens her usual job to include investigation. She's sure the husband is a bad actor, but needs to collect proof to satisfy herself. To further co...more
The book starts of interesting describing the characters that appear throughout the book, getting past the middle of the book, the plot becomes tedious, dealing with the forensic investigator Theresa Maclean her past life, her present life with her daughter, in any case once past the middle I started skipping pages, as the plot seemed to unfold far too slowly for me, the forensic details became complicated time spent in the lab, seemed extremely unrealistic, in any case unfortunately according t...more
As sequel to the author's first novel, Takeover, this setting finds the protaganist still in the midst of her grief. I just thought the author stretched credibility with some of her plot lines. I hate it when a forensic investigator is made out to be a detective and super sleuth, when in reality I think most of their job is performed in a lab. Also, the ending was so contrived and wrapped up so neatly that I found it to be very simplistic. Don't get me wrong, it was an easy and enjoyable re...more
I LOVED the first book in this series especially since it is set in my hometown and had a solid mystery and great suspense. This follow up didn't do the first book justice. Theresa works in the coroner office and is assigned a case where she can't figure out, if the death is accidental or murder. This is where the book goes weak, Theresa becomes obsessed with this case and does things that a person working in the coroner office would never do. The strengths of this book is it is very realistic, ...more
This was a pretty good story. I thought that the author was somewhat repetitious in describing some of the action. The main corpse wasn't all that appealing as a character--of course, we only get to know her through the other characters. It is rather preposterous to think of an infant being bequeathed a large sum of money. The husband comes off as a cold fish type--just wanted eye candy in a wife. The exboyfriend is creepy--with eight or so scrapbooks of the victim.
This is the April pick for my book group. I really enjoyed especially because it was set in Cleveland, Ohio which is not far from me. It was a very fast read. You kind of knew who the killer was, but you just couldn't figure out how he did it. The ending was like something out of a television show; I don't know that she really could have pulled that off. This was the second in the series, so I may have to back track and read the first one. I recommend it for mystery lovers.
I really enjoyed Lisa Black's storyline, but a few parts were so filled with forensic details it got a bit dry.
A young mother is found dead with no apparent cause of death. Could the perfect crime really have been committed? Forensic scientist Theresa has set her teeth in this case and will not let loose until she finds the answers.

I truly enjoy this series of suspense / mystery novels by Ms Black. The stories are set in the Cleveland, Ohio area where I was born and raised for a number of years. The locations mentioned in the book are for the most part real, and thus make the story more interesting for those of us familiar with Cleveland. The fact that she is also a very good writer, and uses her backgroun d as a forensic pathologist in the writing, makes each story even better.
A good novel of suspense set in Cleveland, Ohio. The author does a great job of describing a bleak winter landscape and a cold blooded murderer. However, a forensic scientist is determined to find proof and prevent the death of another innocent victim, an infant child.
A lot of times a sophomore effort falls down on the job, not in this case. I found Lisa Black's second book much more compelling, better constructed and more believable than her first book. In fact, if I hadn't I'd be quitting this series, instead I'll go on. (I'm sure that's an enormous relief to the author.<g>)

I read the first book in this series but this one isn't as good. I know the heroine (a forensic investigator) watched her fiance die 8 months previously, but get over it already. The crime is interesting though. It involves the wonderful world of video games.
Another well done who-done-it by Lisa Black. Its the story of a woman who meets her man while she is pregnanat with another man's child. He doesn't care he says, after the baby is born he marries her. 3 weeks later she is missing, 5 days later she turns up dead in a wooded area 3 miles from her home. At first it looks like a suicide, but Theresa MacLean, a forensic investigator just doesn't believe it. Jillian Perry's body show absolutely no signs of how she died. Many want to put it down as fre...more
Second book in the series. Very good. A forensic investigator realing from the death of her boyfriend 8 months ago takes on a case of a mother who was found frozen. With no clues she sets out to prove it was murder.

I can't believe I read the whole thing.
Had the murder solved by about page 5. The rest was rather tedious, especially the laborious explanations of the working of a crime lab, as if anyone in a real crime lab would have been allowed to behave in such a manner. The characters weren't really likable. I kept waiting for the story to get better. This book is okay if you are bored on a plane; it is a light read. Otherwise, find something else.

This book was better than her first, but I thought the plot would have been way more involved than it was.
I only give four stars because it took awhile for the book to get started. Once it did it was great.
Another great story in the Tess MacLean series! I love the mystery! I also love the family dynamics!
Strong characters, good plot. Enjoyed this book and look forward to another.
When the missing wife of a video game creator is found dead in the woods near Cleveland's Edgewater Park without so much as a scratch on her, everyone assumes that she was depressed and froze to death. But something doesn't ring true and forensic scientist Theresa MacLean keeps digging for some evidence of murder until she gets to the truth.

I really like this author....
Boring....didn't like the heroine.

good, liked the Cleveland setting. Could feel her frustration without a defined mode of murder, interesting
I just couldn't get into it.
It took me all of the holidays to finally finish it. I kept putting it down and reading something else. It's a library book.
I have decided that I simply do not like Medical examiners or any other non-Police/FBI/etc solving murder cases. Her little "I win" at the end was extremely unrealistic and would have had her fired in real life.
I'm going to pass on these in the future.

Lisa Black spent the happiest five years of her life in a morgue. Strange, perhaps, but true. After ten years as a secretary, she went back to school to get a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Cleveland State University. In her job as a forensic scientist at the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office, she analyzed gunshot residue on hands and clothing, hairs, fibers, paint, glass, DNA, blood and many ot...more
