Courtney's caught in the middle of a battle between the Lewds and the Prudes at her school after a not-so-subtle attack by some members of the abstinence group she formed. Although she wasn't involved, she's still getting a lot of flak for it. And with the Op Ed piece, her values are tested when she's paired with Lance. She's in for quite the ride.

When you look up the definition of “prude” in the dictionary, there are no words to define it, there’s only a picture of Courtney Condon. I really disliked this book.
I thought that Courtney was a truly irritating character. Her "off-beat" humor was forced and annoying, and she was so judgmental and closed-mined that I hated spending these 200 pages with her. She meets a girl with big boobs and a low-cut top and she is actually surprised that the girl is nice. Even when she changed, it was so out of the blue (seriously, she does a 180 degree turn within one sentence) that it felt like a contrivance. I didn't More...

Courtney Condon is a junior who is suddenly facing a lot of issues. The school club she started a year ago for students committed to staying virgins until marriage is being taken over by a new girl who wants to ramp us their profile and be more confrontational. Her mother won’t talk about sex, and she acts as though it’s the cause of all evil. Overall I'm not really sure what I thought of this book. I'll start with what I liked about it.
I liked Courtney, she is strong yet unsure and she has a quirky sense of humor that I appreciate. I think she can be a realistic teenager, constantly trying to understand what she believes. Courtney Condon is a likeable character: funny, smart, caring and reliable, with a somewhat difficult home situation. Her mother is devoutly Catholic and fervently anti-sex - to the point that Courtney's older brother Cody has had to move out and her father sleeps on the sofa. I'm not for sure why I picked up Dear Big V. I knew the topic was virginity, but wow, it's about all anyone really talks about. The opening begins with the MC just chatting it up with her BIG V which was all sorts of weird.

A 16-year-old girl writing letters to her virginity? Yep, this is a bizarre concept, but that is the basis of the novel. It bothered me how close-minded this girl was, in that she was constantly judging her peers. The book is similar in plot to the novel, PURE, where a girl struggles with her vow to remain pure and her friends are divided on the issue. My immediate reaction after reading this book was "weird." The characters were realistic and the scenario was amusing, but maybe a little too extreme. Yes, teenagers have to make the decision to abstain from sex or not, and yes that decision can become a part of one's identity. But a girl writing to her virginity? May be worth adding to the collection to help students realize that abstinence is an option, but might be more effective if the narrator was sure of that herself.

Well, that's true, but there's more to this book. One could say that this book is all about sex and the choice to do or not to do (that is the question, ha ha). However, I think that this book addresses more issues that feel relevant. She deals with the popular girls at school, her mother's coldness, and some other issues. Thankfully, that keeps this book from being only about one thing.

I really liked Ellen Leroe's writing style -- it was reminiscent of Louise Rennison's Georgia books. Though the story was thoroughly predictable and at times unrealistic, it was a fun, quick read.
