Honestly, I thought I would find this book boring and uninteresting unlike the first book of the series. I have to stop at the end of first chapter because I find the story very slow and flat so I decided to try the Lion, the Witch and the Wizard first, and have a glimpse of Narnia through the adventures of the Pevensie siblings. I enjoyed the book as much as I enjoyed the movie that I decided to go back to the first book of the series and see the creation of Narnia.

I thought this book was so beautiful.
Favorite quotes/parts:
"He put on a very high, shiny, stiff collar of the sort that made you hold your chin up all the time. He put on a white waistcoat with a pattern on it and arranged his watch chain across the front . . . He took his eye-glass, with the thick black ribbon, and screwed it into his eye; then he looked at himself in the mirror.

Despite the fact that The Magicians Nephew is the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia, strangely, it is frequently overlooked. People skip straight ahead to The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, and then, at a later date come back to this book.
Personally, I like this book just as well as any others in the series. I love to see how everything got started, the lamp post, the wardrobe, the White Witch. Not to mention the beautiful allegory of Creation. The Magician's Nephew also More...

Well isn't this a pleasant surprise! I should explain:I have been struggling for quite awhile with this series. Having not gone to an English speaking school, I never read The Chronicles of Narnia growing up. I have to admit I discovered the film versions first. Then,I attempted to read it right after 'The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe' came out, but at that time, I had a hard time with C.S.Lewis' style. He tends to constantly insert the author’s voice, and I found it broke the fantasy. T

I really liked how C. S. Lewis imagined how those things that he earlier introduced in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe came into existence: the kingdom of Narnia, the professor, the witch, the wardrobe and the lamp-post. Wiki says that Lewis wrote this right after publishing that first book (in order of publication) but it took him 6 years to finish it. That's probably the reason why this became Book 6 (again in order of publication).

Inilah bagian kedua dari tujuh judul serial The Chronicles of Narnia.

This was one of the most amazing books I read. Digory and his mother move to London because Digory's mother is sick. They are staying with Digory's Aunt and Uncle. Everyone thinks Digory's uncle is crazy, and they are right. The adventure begins when Digory and his neighbor, Polly, go exploring in Polly's house. They find a secret passage and find it leads to Digory's uncle's room. Uncle Andrew tricks Polly and digory into putting on magic yellow rings, which takes them to an in between place th

This is sort of a “prequel” to the most famous Narnia book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (now a major motion picture!). I read that book last December and was pleased to discover that it was: a) much shorter than Tolkein’s acclaimed fantasy books (which I do not care for) and b) much less difficult to read than C.S. Lewis’s other books (Mere Christianity, for one … okay, fine, that’s the only other Lewis book I’ve actually completed! :-P) And, of course, I loved the symbolism in the stor

The Magicians Nephew By C.L Lewis is the first of the Narina series. Digory Kirke (the old man in the Lion the Witch and the wardrobe.)and Polly leave to Narnia (a magical planet) Plummer because Digory's uncle, Uncle Andrew sends Polly away with a magical ring (that why is it called the Magicians Nephew because Digory is Andrews Nephew and Andrew is a magician.)

I read this book and the next in the series to my daughter. I have decided to not continue the series due to theological concerns. Although the stories are interesting and fun and captivating, there is a big emphasis on magic used both by the evil witch (black magic) and by Aslan (presumably "good magic"). Also, there is clearly a deification of Aslan (his song brings the new world of Narnia to life, hence he is "the creator" of life there); even to the point of using the

Napanuod ko yung movie adaptation nung The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, ang akala ko noon ay yun ung unang libro, nagkamali ako The Magician's nephew muna pala. haha, kaya nung nakakita ako ng libro nito sa Booksale 'di na ako nagdalawang isip at binili ko na, ewan ko kung bakit, pero naging interesado lang siguro. Plot: This is the beginning of the Narnia tales. It takes place when Narnia is first made, and when the Witch is introduced to the perfect society. It follows Digory and Polly, two English schoolchildren who, through Digory's Uncle Andrew's meddling, get sent to another world via magic rings. This world is Narnia. This is the set up for the rest of the series, though Lewis wrote it later.
Positives: Its a fun adventure story, and I always wanted to go to Narnia as a kid. There a More...

This was one of the first books I can clearly remember reading as a child and since then I've read it any number of times for my own pleasure and that of my children. Recently, I thought I'd revisit it and I wasn't disappointed. Everyone knows the story so I won't rehash it here but what struck me at this reading was the humour which,as in the best children's books is so often based around the absurdity of adult behaviour. Like the passage in The Magician's Nephew when Digory and Polly return fr

Digory and Polly are exploring a passageway between their houses one summer morning when they stumble into Digory's uncle's study. Uncle Andrew dapples in magic, and tricks Polly into taking one of his magic rings. Digory goes after her, and they find themselves in a magic wood, a passageway to different worlds. Exploring further, they find evil as well as a land about to be created.

C.S. Lewis is one of my favourite authors. His writing is so pure and enthralling. Several times I find myself re-reading several sentences because they make so much sense and are so tender to the heart. The story is beautiful, just so beautiful it kinda makes me want to wish it existed. Digory is a very innocent child, whose naive mind makes everything an adventure. I watched "Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" before reading this book. After reading this book, everything

Mmm, nostalgia trip. I've finished my essays, so this is what I turn to. Very quick read, now, actually. Even though I'm less enthused about the Christian allegory stuff now -- particularly after writing a whole essay on the Christian elements in Tolkien's work, which are more subtle and done with more of a sense of wonder, to my mind -- it's like the mental equivalent of a warm bath or something. It's just... cosy.

I first read this book as a 9 year old child. It affected me in ways I could not have fully articulated then, but it left me with a sense of wonder and rightness that must be true and attainable in the actual world that we live in. This idea remained inside of my subconscious, and it gave me an unnamed hope and faith in Right and Good as I grew older and experienced the Jadises of life. Rereading it as an adult brought the memories of the childhood reading flooding back, and as is to be expected

Boy oh boy, was I glad I found The Magician's Nephew before I began The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe! This book was simply magical! Diggory and Penny's friendship and curiosity -the kind of curiosity which only children seemed to be blessed with- was the crucial bit that laid a foundation for the other books in the series. Though how horrid and cowardly (and ridiculously funny in his own way) Diggory's uncle -the said ''Magician''- might have been, his role was just as important.

I re-read this book after having to skim a particularly disappointing Star Wars novel—I needed to get back to something I knew, something I loved, something that was easy to read and would just tell me the story itself. There is perhaps no other book that could do this for me that the story of Narnia’s creation and the arrival of the White Witch into the country. It is a nearly perfect allegory, as I read it, and the truth of the words of Aslan seem more true to me than just about anything I’v

One day, Polly Plummers meets Digory Kirke, a boy living next door, they become friends and one day, Polly suggests to go to her house to explore the tunnel that she discovered, and called,"Smuggler's cave",when they go through the whole tunnel, at the end, they are in a room, and suddenly Digory's Uncle Andrew comes into the room, and asks Polly if she would like one of the glowing yellow rings on the table. Polly says yes, puts on the ring, and disappears into the thin air. At this

My love affair with books began the entire series of The Chronicles of Narnia. My favorite of all the books has always been The Magician’s Nephew. It takes place during the 1900’s and follows Digory and Polly’s adventure to various worlds including Narnia which Aslan is in the process of creating when they arrive. Although this is my favorite of all the stories of Narnia, I feel that the religious undertone is more prevalent within this story than is most of the others. I think that it does

After Digory Kirke is sent to live with his uncle because his other has fallen ill, he meets a girl named Polly. They become friends, and together, they discover that Digory's uncle is a magician. He gives them magic rings, rings that can take them to other worlds. Together, Digory and Polly travel to a land named Charn, and Digory can't resist awaking the evil that dwells there - Queen Jadis. They then travel to a dark and bare land, but right in front of their eyes, Narnia is founded by As

In the movie Cowboys vs. Aliens, the old gang of the main character hate him, because he left them to be with his wife. In the end they forgive him and help him defeat the menacing aliens. Just like Jake Lonergan, Aslan in the book The Magicians Nephew by C.S. Lewis forgives and forgets Digory. When the witch tempts Digory with the apple he shouldn’t eat, that is very challenging. When Digory thinks about his mother and wanting to get back to her, that is also a very challenging point of the sto

A very good introduction to the world of Narnia, I always wonder where did people know that Narnia is an allegory of the bible. And then I read the book and goes all "Ooh". Well, this is the thing about Lewis, unlike other authors - even though he have fascinating characters and yet he does not over blow them. Which makes the story all the more intriguing and interesting.

I'm on record (and not alone!) as having a lot of problems with the Narnia series and its blatant religious allegory, resulting in sexism, ignorance and a rather horrifically black-and-white mentality, even for a children's book! In spite of this, every one of the seven books in the series has something to offer, and "The Magician's Nephew" may just be my favourite. Telling the rather simple tale of children discovering magic rings that take them to another world, the story actually su
