I was disappointed that this book turned out to be a 42 page short story. I enjoyed the story premise and think Ally could make a great series out of Bear and Dragon's love and adventures. I've emailed Ally Blue and suggested that she should consider turning this into a series. We can only hope. I heard from Ally and the next book in this series is called Shenandoah and is coming out at the end of this month.

This book was one of those. I think the whole ending of the world futuristic thing turns me off, or maybe the names of the characters turned me the other way in the past. Or just maybe it was the fact that I have been so busy this past year I have only been reading what I have to. Whatever my excuse is, I’m ashamed of myself!

This story is so much more than fantasy. It’s a look into what could really be our future. The old world that the characters are in is really the world as we know it now. Ally Blue did a wonderful job in her references to the past through her characters. The way Bear, her main character, explains what a picture is just tickled me. The characters use little catch phrases like Oh Mother, instead of Oh God. Apparently it was Mother Rose or someone who is the know-it-all and she’s the one responsible for making the new rules and laws of the new world.

The world’s population has been destroyed by what I think is a natural disaster. This left small groups of people alive and they bond together in tribes, reminding me a lot of cave men. Now, each tribe is split into Packs and each member to each tribe, and pack can’t go out exploring, they can’t meet other tribes or packs and must never love anyone outside of their pack. Did you get that?

Sex outside of a pack is against the law and is indeed punishable by death. These rules and the punishment keep their pack members doing what they should be, according to the Mother person. She must like submissive children.

Bear is a member of a Pack, within a Tribe and we meet him while on a hunt for a stranger, with his Pack brother Lynx, who is also his lover. Bear is, in his time, what should be a historian for he’s very interested in the “old world.” However, instead of learning what he desires of the world as it used to be, he ignores it because Mother does not allow for it. Then he meets Dragon, who is the stranger he and Lynx are looking for. Dragon is from another Pack and when Bear begins to fantasize about having sex with Dragon, things begin to go hot and heavy in the story. You can actually feel the sexual frustration build up until you want to scream. Kiss him! Now, Dragon is caught leaning against a tree jacking off. He’s alone, naked, and very dirty. He too shares the same desires that Bear does.

Lynx is a true brother to Bear and he comes through in the time of need. Dragon is a bit submissive and Bear, he has the ability to rule one day. I hope Ally carries on with these two because the ending of the story is yelling for a sequel.

I spent many hours, when I was younger, ferreting off to read Valley of the Horses and other such gems from Jean M. Auel. All that shagging behind rocks and bushes is apparently firmly entrenched in my psyche, so I do have a penchant for any book where the main characters are in loin cloths and doing the subsistence living thing. Totally floats my boat.

I call this sci-fi because it takes place in a dystopian future, but it seems more historical because the setting is after the cities and technology have fallen, Mother Nature fought back, and the people now live in packs, scattered across the country.

An enjoyable, short read about two men finding each other in a post-apocalyptic future. And bucking the norm of acceptability.
I liked the details and world-building that Blue put into the socio-cultural constructs. The dynamics were intriguing, although I felt Blue "gave up" on the ending a bit. When I originally read this, however, I don't know if I realized it was a series.

Whoever leaves their tribe or is expelled faces death since no tribe is going to take in a stranger.
The Pack, the warriors of these times make sure their tribe can live in relative peace. Made up of bands of either "brothers" or "sisters", those warriors have their own rules, their code of honor and their bond, the latter apparently built on having sex with each other. In fact, those warriors seem to have regressed to something just shy of wolves or something; fight, food and fuck seem to be their purposes, not necessarily in that order.
Bear is a big and strong pack member, as good at fighting and as happy to fuck his pack brothers as any of them. Yet, he doesn't quite fit in. In disagreement to his tribe's law, Bear hungers for knowledge, mostly about the old days and the ways of their ancestors. Thus, when Bear and his pack brother Lynx happen across a stranger who seems to share Bear's forbidden longing, Bear can't help but wanting to get to know him. What's more, the stranger, Dragon, is very attractive; although Bear knows that having sex with others than his pack brothers means punishment of death, he can't keep away. Luckily Lynx turns out to be helpful. Instead of bringing Dragon home for execution, Bear escapes together with him.

This was a nice dystopia and a sweet love story. It was short, and it only covered two days, but the author made it quite plausible why Bear would be so taken in by Dragon he'd exchange the relative security of his old life and the company of his pack brothers for Dragon's life and company. As I've come to expect from the author, the sex was really hot, dirty and animalic as can be expected between men who live almost like animals for most of their time, and yet there was gentleness and affection in the way Bear and Dragon found each other. Their world is a cruel, harsh one that demands quick decisions and doesn't linger on reassessments, so Bear's more or less spur of the moment decision to leave with Dragon was believable. Both are strong, fierce men who kill in a heartbeat and yet are capable of deeper emotions. They are innocent in all their wildness, both true savages but promising of being able to become human again. (less)

The world has been destroyed by a natural disaster of some kind and left small groups of people bonding together in tribes, reminiscent of early cave dwelling clans. Separate from these tribes are Packs, but the exact nature of Pack versus Tribe is not thoroughly explained and still somewhat ill described. Packs apparently are filled with all men, each containing some essential identifier that sets them apart from the Tribes, but again what exactly marks men as Pack at an early age is never elucidated. These Packs live by a set of rules which demands they only have sex with each other, no monogamous relationships, and never think or wonder about the past. These rules are enforced with a variety of archaic and barbaric rules and punishments meant to keep people docile and ignorant.

Bear is a member of a Pack and has always hidden his curiosity about the past. He knows that if he divulges that he actually wonders what life was like before the big disaster, he could be executed or exiled. So instead, Bear has ignored those thoughts and goes about his days patrolling and having sex with his various brothers. All of this changes when he meets Dragon, an exile from another Pack who questions the rules of secrecy. His interaction with Dragon rejuvenates all the queries and wonders he had ignored and the sizzling chemistry between the two is too much for Bear to ignore.

The characters of Bear, Dragon, and even Lynx are given life but no depth. The hints of personality are started but never finished as each is interrupted by a sex scene or conversation about the consequences of their actions. Bear seems more interested in finding a monogamous sex partner in Dragon than in exploring the past. Curiosity about the past is supposedly the shared bond but really the sex is too good between the men to ignore. This left all characters slightly empty as the focus on the chemistry and erotica took over the world building and plot. The hanging ending comes about abruptly and clearly was meant for more installments, so perhaps the characters will develop and grow in subsequent stories.

As a short story that focuses on the erotic element with tantalizing glimpses of characters and a world, this tale is decent. It’s intriguing enough to start the series and the writing has a simplistic yet emotive quality. The prose is easy to read while being descriptive without overly dramatic language. Additionally, there are numerous erotic scenes within the story that spans 30 pages. So if you’re a fan of the author and are looking for an introduction to a new world with hot sex – this may work for you. (less)

Okay.... the story was interesting. A world after the global warming. There are tribes with brothers who love each other deeply and the brothers are named after animals. Which i found a little annoying to keep reading Bear this and Bear that. Anyway the story was OK. But the ending was kind of sudden. I didn't get closure and i hated it.... hope there will be a sequel so i can know how it ended.

I read the reviews here before picking this one up, so I knew not to expect much. I'm glad of that. Everyone was right: there's not really a plot, the character development is nearly non-existent, and there are a lot of potentially-interesting world-building things that are never explored or even explained really.

With only 44 pages Ally set quite the world up. Post global warming, everything gone to hell in a handbasket and reverting back to a more basic primitive world with lots of superstition and zenophobia. Bear and Lynx find Dragon trespassing on their land. By the end, I felt I'd only read half a story and was pretty miffed at being dropped off where the novel stopped. Honestly I wanted to learn so much more about the characters and their world - so much more about Dragon and Bear and what would happen to them.

Maybe I need to read the other stories in the Mother Earth series but really, this one was so short I wonder if my frustration at the jilted endings will be the same for every one of them. We'll see, I guess. =/

Good introduction of characters and world building for the start of a series. The ending was more HFN then HEA. I was left wanting to know more about Bear and Dragon and their society. I'm looking forward to the next book, which looks like a bit longer story.
