This is a great read and really two stories in one -- the story of Richard William Barker and his grandfather Billy Barker. Richard is a successful man, used to getting his way. But when tragedy strikes, he draws courage and inspiration by delving into the war-time story of his late father. Till the very end, we are asking ourselves what path will Richard take.

The strength of this novel lies in the author's thorough research, much of it clearly coming from a wealth of life experience. Her observ

3/04/10 Finally got my hands on your book, Faith. Lawrence purchased this for me while in California. I was unable to find it at our library and at Border's Books in San Diego. Had to order it off the internet from Amazon. Don't know what we did before the internet! Anyway, I am SO looking forward to reading it!

3/13/10 This was a goodread! It told two stories that blended together well. The first story was about a sea voyage that went awry. It begins in the present era. The captain's (Richard's)

An outstanding first novel. There are actually two stories here, of a son and of his father, reflecting the search of the son for a greater understanding of the father, and of the impact of that search. Mortimer reminds us that, as we get older, we realize how much more of our parents’ lives we wish we knew. Mortimer’s action scenes, both at sea with the son and the WWII scenes with the father, are boldly written and come across as quite real. The storm at sea scenes are so real they must be bas ...more

Well written, it has some remarkable sea-faring scenes and a memorable tempest in the Atlantic. This is a talented writer and perhaps the only reason I can't give it a 5 star rating is that the author constantly undercuts herself, giving away the end. You simply wish she wouldn't tell you in advance who dies, who marries who because it really spoils the suspense...Then her writing talent takes over and you read it anyway, wishing hard however that in a next book, the plot structure is such that ...more

An excellent book and a great page turner. Set in the present day, the first part of the book focuses on an Atlantic yacht crossing. The second part of the book tells the story of the main character's father during WW11. I found this part alone was very gripping. The last part brings the book back to the present, with a nice touch of romance. Congratulations Faith and shall be looking forward to your next publication.

The Crossing

Richard was morning his wife’s death after she drowned from a boating accident when he found a Bible of his father’s from when he was a POW in WW2. Therefore, his father’s story of the war unfolded. From how his father met his mother to when he joined the Navy and ended up being captured and ended up being a POW.
The story is very well written and well researched too.

Looking forward to read the next book.

Well written Faith
