The books in Kathy Reichs' Bones series are either really, really good or merely decent, and this newest installment fell into the latter category. I think my level of enjoyment depends on how interested I am in the murder mystery.

I was annoyed with the level of "catch up" Reichs did - I can understand wanting a new reader to be able to pick up any Bones book and understand the players, but by the 11th book in the series, I really don't need to spend pages on what Tempe's j...more

i feel an obligation to read all of her books because i started with the first one when it came out a million years ago. i recall the first ones to be pretty good. this is the 11th brennan novel, and it annoyed me to no end. primarily the foreshadowing she uses at the end of each short chapter, usually reading "And things were going to get worse. Much worse." EVERY SINGLE CHAPTER. ugh. mostly her writing just got worse. i can't even recall the plot, something to do with bones in a caul...more

If this was the first Reichs book I read, I don't know that I'd read any more. Nothing about it was memorable or unique enough to set it apart from other mystery books. There was a bit less of the smart/stupid Brennan than the last book, less of textbook explanation of various sciences, fewer rhetorical questions, but still too many for me. The other annoying bit about the writing was the "telling" not "showing" of action and emotion. The only example that comes to mind a...more

I normally start out my reviews with a brief synopsis of events that take place in the first 40-50 pages of a book but in all honesty I can’t think of more than a sentence to say about this one. Temperance Brennan, forensic anthropologist, is called in when a skull is found under the flooring of an old house in North Carolina. Nothing else that develops the plot in any meaningful way happens before page 75. There’s a history lesson about the town of Charlotte, a swag of stultifying detail about ...more

Kathy Reichs joins the ranks of so many writers who feel compelled to produce a book every year and end up producing crap. I used to so enjoy her books -- but she has gone downhill fast and this might be the last one that I read.

Devil Bones' only saving grace was that it was quick to read .. but only because of the # of pages, not because of the content. There were too many peripheral characters that added nothing to the plot except to make it confusing. I also prefer the books that...more

This is the first book of the series that I've read. There are a few interesting things about the style that I like. When you get to the last line of a chapter, there is always something that makes you want to turn the page and keep on going.

Of course, there are a couple of things that just keep on going, but should probably end sooner. Tempe has some difficulties in figuring out what is odd about one of the bodies found in this book. With all of the clues scattered about, you would ...more

I've gone back to my favorite genre - mystery! - as the cold October winds start to blow and Kathy Reichs is a good place to step back into type. Devil Bones is a good read, but not great.

This book can be read alone, but is also part of the Temperence Brennan series. You won't be lost series-wise if you start here, but you may not care to pick up the other books in the series. This book is heavy on minute details about dead bodies; light on romance and family; and doesn't have as...more

Home renovations on Greenleaf Avenue in Charlotte, N.C. are hellish. “What I seen is Satan, himself, “the plumber tells forensic anthropologist, Tempe Brennon. But she and Detective “Skinny” Slidell weren’t prepared for what was in the home’s basement. The earthen chamber displayed cauldrons, one large, one small, a rusty sauce pan, plywood, some sort of tools, religious statues and candles, beads and antlers suspended overhead the makeshift altar. Human remains were present. A...more

I have read only three of the Temperance Brennan novels (the other two being Bones to Ashes and Break No Bones. As I've stated in the previous two reviews, I am a fan of the Bones television series, but the original books that the show is based on just don't seem to appeal to me for some reason.

That said, this was probably the best of the three Temperance Brennan books I have read. The plot involves the discovery of a body (wait - I'm pretty sure all the Bones books start out that wa...more

I hadn't read a Kathy Reichs' novel in a couple years so it was fresh and exciting to me. I missed Tempe and her issues. This book isn't one of the best of the series but it is definitely better than Cross Bones was. I enjoyed the topics it explored. I didn't know much about the Santeria or Wiccan religions, so it was interesting to read about them. The book uses a local politician on TV to explore whether someone from those religions should be allowed to practice free from constraints espe...more

I've been reading the entire Tempe Brennan series for the past few months, and sadly I've almost finished. Over the weekend, I read the eleventh (and next-to-last in the series thus far) book in the series. At this point, I have only one book left... But it's actually perfect timing, because Kathy Reichs will release another Tempe book in August. So one left to enjoy, and then a new book to read soon.

Devil Bones is the book Reichs has been leading up to with all of her other books. R...more

There was one plot point that really, really let me down. Because I knew what the answer was, and yet these people whose job it is to know these things didn't come up with it. As Brennan says when she figures out this one thing, there toward the end: "I don't know how I could have been so dense." I had to stop reading while I wished fervently to be able to whack her across the back of her head.

But other than that it was pretty cool. I had warning on two sides that this...more

So, I haven't had much time for reading this summer, and that makes this book that much more of a disappointment. I picked this book up in the airport after finishing my last book, which was fantastic. I wish I hadn't wasted my precious reading minutes on this book. Harsh, I know. But (and I realize this is a book in a series of books) there is very, very little character development. I would expect a little bit more character and storyline development, even in a book that is part of a series ...more

This was actually a pretty good book. The premise has been done to death, but Reichs manages to put a nice twist on the story and give us an ending that, while somewhat cliche, more than satisfies.

I managed to read this in less than 48 hours, unlike Reichs' last outing, which took me over a week to read.

Devil Bones is well-paced with a gripping storyline. And just when she had me thinking that the villian was one person, she pulled a switcheroo that I didn't see coming....more

i had mixed feeling about this installment. i LOVE the temperance brennan series, but they start to get uneven as the series progresses.

the good:
-all the neat facts about wicca, santeria, and voodoo. reichs definitely did her research on the subject.
-gay prostitution. i thought that was interesting. it isn't something we really think about; but i'm sure it's a major issue in some places.
-the sexual tension between tempe, charlie, and ryan. i thought it was very real...more

Listening to this from Austin-Shreveport-Austin, 10/8-10/10

10/8:
- characters named Cuervo & Tequila just make me want a margarita.
- I am probably not paying as much attention as I should because I have no idea how many dead bodies we are dealing with
- I am not a fan of whoever is reading this book. 80% of that is probably because she is not Emily Deschanel, but the other 20% is because she is annoying. Especially when she voices Brennan's daughter and some of the male ch...more

Breathlessly paced and trickily plotted, DEVIL BONES features Dr Temperance Brennan in her North Carolina setting, solving a case that begins with a grisly discovery in a basement. An altar suggesting the practice of Santeria is uncovered during a home renovation, and soon a body with ritualistic markings is found at a nearby lake. As Tempe tries to connect the two cases, a local conservative media pundit latches on to the crimes as evidence of Satanic practices in the area, which does not me...more

I found this mystery to be very slow at first. A lot of the science was over my head as well which made it difficult for me to follow. Also, I was pretty annoyed at not being able to figure out who did it before it was revealed. The explanation made sense, but it was completely different from what I had expected. Overall, I did enjoy the book, but I probably should have started with the first book in the series despite it being the inspiration for a TV series that I already watch.

I actually learned a lot that I either didn't know or had forgotten. This is Reich's 11th Temperance Brennan book, and she spends some time telling the reader who she is, what she does, where she works, a lot about Charlotte, NC as a setting, and where she is in her life. It was helpful, actually, since I have not read the whole series, and have read in random order.

Another reviewer pointed out that she tended to end every chapter with some version of "...what happened next wa...more

Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan is called in on a case that might involve devil worshippers, or Wiccans, or practicers on Santeria ... actually, she and her fellow investigators are having difficulty deciding just what happened to the victim found in the crawl space of a North Carolina home.
This was one of the better offerings in this series. It's been a little while since I read the last few, but I seem to remember being somewhat disappointed - though that sometimes happens wh...more

I really enjoy the forensic anthropology details in these books by Kathy Reichs. I find the contrast between these much more realistic and darker novels with the lightweight and kind of silly TV series Bones intriguing. I think the TV series has developed a life of its own and is departing from the original inspiration. There is a conversation with Kathy Reichs at the end of this novel that was interesting in which she is asked about her real life forensic job, the genesis for many of her books,...more

Kathy Reichs is the real-life inspiration for the heroine of this book and also for tv detective Bones. Since I love Patricia Cornwell's (and Linda Fairstein's) books I decided to give this one a try. It was entertaining and the cast of characters (the "regulars," I presume) are interesting. I especially liked the budding love triangle, and may read subsequent books to see how it plays out. The premise of this story is a set of ghoulish murders and public misperceptions of a variety of...more

This is the 11th book featuring forensic anthropologist, Temperance Brennan.

A plumber uncovers a secret room in a home he was remodeling. There are signs of devil worship. A skull is placed in the middle of an altar and Temp is called to the scene.

Temp investigates and after analysis, learns that the skull is from a young girl. Her inquiry turns to finding out who the girl was, and where the skull came from. She wants to discover if the skull is from a murder victim. Whi...more

I'm a huge fan of the tv-show, Bones, and when I found out the show was (very loosely) based on novels, I had to give them a go. And I can't say I'm disappointed.

What's important to understand is that the books and the show are two different things - they're different medias. Of course that's not an excuse for making somewhat shallow characters (of which Reichs is guilty) - the characters of the novels pale a little compared to the charming, witty and - if I must say it - sexy charac...more

I much prefer Reichs to Cornwell because Reichs really is a forensic anthropologist and her content and facts are most interesting. This time around we learn a fair amount about syncretic religions, and the reaction of some mainline religion fundamentalists to them, and our heroine's reaction to that. There are almost too many threads to follow, even though there's really only one case.

I've always found the heroine's actions unrealistic. It's just not plausible that the scientist goe...more
