A sweet little book for toddlers with simple, repetitive phrases.

The pictures are wonderful; as the dog asks animals to play with him and they decline for their own [rhyming] reasons, he gets more and more despondent until he finds the right playmate. The pictures are uncluttered, so it's easy to play "Where's the cat?" or "Where's the ball?"

L is all about puppies right now, so she was pleased with this library book. We both enjoyed the repetition: "Dog want to play. When? Today!"

Cute idea. Dumb rhymes.

Re-read 1/6/16: Mama read this to me today before my nap. I tried to read along with her by repeating "Today!" about when puppy wanted to play.

Originally read 6/13/15: I got this in the mail from the Imagination Library yesterday! I was so excited to pull it from the mailbox. Mama read it to me today. I liked the illustrations of the puppy - mostly when he was sad because no one would play with him.

Wonderfully illustrated. This gripping tale of a dog attempting to seize one of his remaining days on this cold lonely rock. The dog desires nothing more than to spend what could be his final hours on this planet playing, only to be surrounded by naysayers and cowards. Dog, eternally hopeful, perseveres.

Great for storytime! "Dog wants to play. When? Today!" Dog asks all kinds of animals on the farm to play in this rhyming story full of repetition. All the animals say no, but in the end a little boy says yes. Cute, cuddly art.

Dog searches the farm for someone to play with him. The repetitive phrases and playful rhyming make this a read-aloud must for my PreK students (especially the bilingual class who need to hear books with repetition).

A picture book proving that kids are dogs best friends. All of the other animals do not share dog's exuberance for play time.

Great repetition for the emerging reader. Delightful story with the perfect ending.

Written by Christine McDonnell and illustrated by Jeff Mack. Published by Viking Books.

A good book for young children. And a good early reader. Brightly colored. And very easy to share the idea of different animal noises as each of the farm critters is introduced.

Loved going through the repetitive scheme of dog asking to play and being told no, while finding the "friend" on each page would eventually say yes. Great pictures!

Abbi really liked this one. The rhyming was good for her to figure out the unknown words and the story line itself was really good. He finally found someone to play!
