Why are the best books the hardest to review? I'm not sure I can come up with enough superlatives for this one, the second book in Lisa Kleypas's magical Wallflowers series. I think she hit the ball out of the park with this humorous, emotional, romantic read!

I think she hit the ball out of the park with this humorous, emotional, romantic read!

I had my doubts coming into this, after reading Secrets of a Summer Night. In that book Marcus, Lord Westcliff (most eligible bachelor in England), was such an uptight, humorless stick-in-the-mud--how was I going to fall for him in his own book? Ahh, but LK did a 180 with his character, giving us his whole backstory (including brutal childhood), and I got to understand him, and fall in love with him right along with the heroine, American soap heiress Lillian Bowman.

Now, Lillian--I loved this girl despite (or maybe because) she was so opinionated, headstrong, irreverent, stubborn, sharp-tongued, funny,--and she took no guff from the button-downed, often arrogant Westcliff. Oh how they battled! Their arguing and sniping masked a heap of sexual tension between the two. He wanted her but hated that he did; she wanted him but hated that she did! You knew something had to give--who would be the first to break down and do something about it?

There were many, many scenes in this book that either made me laugh or made me sigh in satisfaction. Laughing? Any of the many conversations between Lillian and the other Wallflowers (Annabelle, Evie, Daisy--they had such fun together), but especially between Lillian and younger sister Daisy and the experiments with the perfume that Lillian insisted worked as an aphrodesiac. I also got a chuckle out of Westcliff and his friends (Hunt, St. Vincent, Shaw) discussing the frequency of their sexual liasons, and the time Hunt caught Westcliff and Lillian in a compromising position and teased him about his "once a week" beliefs.

The sighing? When Westcliff decides to give Lillian a few pointers about how to bat; their first kiss while hiding behind the hedgerow; the scene in the Butterfly Court (smokin' hot); the scene with the pear brandy (funny and scorching hot); when Westcliff professes his feelings and tells Lillian that she can be whoever she wants to be as long as she's with him; the poached pear scene (yowza!); and finally, when Westcliff stands up to his viper of a mother and tells her where to go! Yay, Marcus!

As usual, Kleypas's story is superbly written, with vivid descriptions of the characters, the food (the calf's head!), the clothing, and Westfield's beautiful estate of Stony Cross Park. Kleypas leaves no stone unturned in her storytelling--the characters backstories and every emotion are all layed out for the reader to enjoy--I felt that I was right there in the 1840s English countryside, witnessing it all.

Now LK threw a bit of a curveball that I didn't see coming, regarding St. Vincent (who I was liking just fine), that made me dislike him. Now how is she going to redeem him in his book (Devil in Winter)? I can't wait to find out! I don't know if she can top this one, which earns 5 big stars!

This was a great second entry into the Wallflower series. I really enjoyed this story and I firmly believe that Lillian and Westcliff are soulmates. But he was snobby in how he viewed Lillian and her sister, because they were brash Americans. Lillian is very forward thinking, and would never fit into the mold of a well-bred, quiet, English lady. Westcliff thinks that's exactly what he wants if he marries. But he's not in a hurry to marry anyway, although he knows he must. I think he was waiting for that spark that exploded when Lillian came into the picture. Perhaps his snooty attitude toward Lillian was just his way of keeping a barrier up against her. Westcliff fought his feelings for Lillian for as long as he could. But I have to give it to him, when he fell, he fell hard.

I enjoyed the way Lillian needled him. Westcliff had a tendency to take himself way too seriously. He needed to loosen up. Lillian starts out finding him too high in the instep and too stuffy and far too bossy, but at the same time, she's fiercely attracted to his muscular vitality and virlity. Westcliff is a keen sportsman and athlete. I like that he believes in working hard and isn't a rake (this was a nice change for a character who was very much of the aristocracy). I think this aura also won over Lillian. There is no question about the strong attraction between Lillian and Westcliff, and it drives this book towards its inevitable conclusion.

In this story, my favorite hero, St. Vincent, is more of a villain. What he does was very ill-advised, and he pays for it the hard way. Luckily it helps to show Marcus, Lord Westcliff, what he is about to allow to slip through his fingers. Maybe that's why Westcliff can't stay mad at him.

I can't say this is one of my favorites by LK. I think it's because Westcliff and Lillian are very abrasive characters who I love in small doses, but can overwhelm me in large doses. But, LK has never written a bad book and she never will, in my opinion. And this book fits so seemlessly into the Wallflower series (with crossover with Again the Magic since Marcus is Aline's older brother) that it's going to be a keeper by default.

Wow! Another fun installment of The Wallflowers series.

I love the way Lisa Kleypas developes her characters. Subtly, without pages and pages of narrative descriptives. We learn about them by seeing them in action, or through the eyes of others.

American heiress Lillian Bowman came to London along with her family to pursue a worthy husband of her status. However, Lillian seems to loathe the handsome yet headstrong Earl of Stony Cross Park, Marcus, Lord Westcliff as she believes that he is a snob and Marcus seems to loathe Lillian also since she is so stubborn. But this couple will soon realize that their differences might bring them closer together.

*My, I am so breathless!* Oh my goodness, this book clearly defines what a true romance novel is all about! I just practically love everything about this book – the characters, the plot and the romance! I loved the way that Lisa Kleypas made the book extremely dramatic yet hilarious at the same time and what I really loved about Lisa Kleypas’ writing is how she made Lillian Bowman and Marcus, Lord Westcliff’s relationship seem so hilarious, especially when they are arguing so much. I usually disapprove of couples fighting in romance novels, but in this case, the way that Marcus and Lillian argued was so cute! It is like one moment Lillian and Marcus are arguing about how they should ruled each other’s lives and then the next minute, they are making love to each other!

As much as I loved the plot, the characters were the true highlights of this story! My favorite characters in this book are of course, Lillian Bowman and Marcus, Lord Westcliff! Lillian Bowman is truly one heroine I truly enjoyed as she Is not afraid to speak her mind, even in the face of danger and I loved the way that she easily stands up to Marcus and speaks on her opinions, which is an aspect of her character that I truly loved. I also loved Lillian’s close relationship with the other Wallflowers which included her sister Daisy Bowman, Annabelle Peyton and Evangeline Jenner. Now, I would like to talk about Marcus, Lord Westcliff and man is he something else! Marcus, Lord Westcliff is one amazing hero as he is described as being muscular yet lean and he is truly headstrong and also speaks his mind! What I really loved about Marcus is how he truly has a heart full of gold, especially when it concerns Lillian and when Lillian is in grave danger, oh boy, watch out because Marcus can be really frightening when he is angry, which I really admit made me more attracted to his character! I could go on and on about Marcus, but that would be an extremely long list to go through! This romance novel is sex scenes galore as it is full of lovemaking scenes between Marcus and Lillian that will have your hairs stand on your ends!

There are many sex scenes throughout this book, so anyone who is uncomfortable with reading sex scenes might want to skip over these scenes when reading this book.

All in all, “It Happened One Autumn” is clearly a novel that defines what a true romance novel is all about and also features my favorite hero, Marcus, Lord Westcliff! I am definitely going out of my way to read the next book in the Wallflower series, Devil in Winter!

Another fine addition to the Wallflower quartet, the story of Miss Lillian Bowman and Marcus, Lord Westcliff is a lively, funny and romantic story. I loved both the characters, and although at first they seem like complete opposites, with Westcliff giving a very austere impression and Lillian being very outgoing, I thought that under the surface they had similar characteristics, both domineering, stubborn, convinced they are always right, prideful, and had the tendency to hide their feelings behind various facades. But that seems to give them a rather negative character assessment, but that is far from the truth, they are also both fiercely loyal with lively and caring personalities.

The romance between the two was inevitable, and was started really in “Secrets of a Summer Night,” as demonstrated by the rounder-in-knickers incident *giggles in remembrance* They are both drawn to each other despite the rather low opinions they have of one another at the beginning. Westcliff thinks that Lillian is an abrasive, ill mannered, savage; however, I wonder how much of his rather unreasonable hostility was a defence mechanism, and Lillian thought he was an autocratic boring brute, although it seems that is more a reaction to his behaviour. I like how as they both get to know each other, they begin to realize they are more then they appear and perhaps they are exactly what the other needs, despite of and maybe because of their flaws.

As well as romantic relationships, you also see the group of friends, the wallflowers, come together again, I love seeing their friendship blossom and continue, and the cast of different characters in this series is, apart from the romances, one of the best things about it. You get to see the continuation of Annabelle and Simon’s HEA and the further character development of both Evie and Daisy in preparation for their own books.

There was also in the introduction of the infamous rake Lord St. Vincent, one of LK’s most famous heroes. He is a rather notorious scoundrel and rake, and despite his physical charms and his “animal magnetism” a very cold and immoral person. He plays the part of villain in this book, but is there anything but self interest and hatred below pretty facade, hmmm, I guess I will have to read on to find out...

Again in this book, the writing was witty and funny in both the dialogue and storytelling, it keeps you engaged, effortlessly giving you a window into the Wallflowers world. I would recommend this to all Lisa Kleypas fans, and those who love historical romance. It is well written, with well fleshed out characters that feel like old friends and a believable love story.

Another 5 star story from Kleypas' Wallflower series!

The quintessential domineering, opinionated and infuriating alpha up against a woman who is the farthest thing from a shrinking violet! These two butt heads from the first book and continue on in book 2 but when they get together they just just melt off the pages. The romance makes your eyes all watery and you're sighing so, so slowly with a choked voice: Ohhhh myyyyy gawwwwwwd **sigh, sigh sigh** (!!)

I am glad to say that this book is another 5 stars from Kleypas' Wallflower series; and another book into my faves shelf.

I loved this book. It was amazing from the begining to the end. I must say that while in the first book I got infratuated with the story, in this one I did with the characters, Lillian and Marcus were perfect for each other. I really, really, really liked this one.

From the first book I could tell Lord Westcliff was a keeper, and I was not too happy he was going to be paired of with Lillian, as she wasn't shown to be the nicest kind of person in the first book.

This book is really only a 2.5 for me, but since 2s are books I really don't like, I have to give it a three. Here's what I don't like:
The heroine, Lillian, is just a tad shy of being a willful, spoiled brat instead of the headstrong, high-spirited young woman we're told she is. Her actions to have own way, even when it's to her detriment, are irritating.

I’m a huge fan of bickering couples, especially when they initially don’t like each other. Usually all that banter, all that pent up energy, has to go somewhere and that somewhere leads to one explosive relationship. After reading the first book, I knew Lillian and Marcus’ impending relationship was going to be one those types. It’s safe to say that I was looking for this one.

Lord Marcus Westcliff, with his pure blood line, his wealth and his family place in the aristocracy, makes him one England’s most eligible bachelors. You can safely say that the pressures of his station in life demands that he marries well, preferably one who belongs in the aristocracy, and produce an heir. To those who don’t know him, he can come off arrogant and stiff, but his closest friends would beg to differ. To them, he is nothing but kind, smart, loyal, a shrewd businessman and a natural born leader. He likes to maintain order. So when he encounters the American, Lillian Bowman, his world is turned upside down.

Lillian Bowman is a free spirit. That’s the best way I can describe her. Her family is from New York and moved to England in hopes that Lillian and her younger sister, Daisy, will form an attachment to a blue blood. Apparently their wealth in the states was more of a deterrent to suitable young bachelors. Since her and Daisy are practically new to London society, they are not well versed to the all the rules and etiquettes of proper society. Lillian doesn’t find any faults in thanking the help, or frolicking in their knickers while playing a game of Rounders, which is, by the way, how she got into Lord Westcliff’s mind. The impression she made at that meeting had long term effects and Lord Westcliff could never forget the sight of her in her undergarments. LOL. Yes, he was doomed. Everything about her and her peculiar behaviors made it obvious that he shouldn’t want her. They’re constantly in each other throats. They claim to not like each other, but alas, when their brains finally caught up to their body’s responses to one another, it was all sensation. They definitely could not get enough of each other.

Though they want to be with each other, what about Westcliff’s duties to marry someone of the aristocracy? Will his duty outweigh his feelings for Lillian? This story was, indeed, predictable, but I enjoyed it. They made such a wonderful couple and I couldn’t help but cheer them on. I can’t wait to delve into book three and read about Evie and St. Vincent’s story. St. Vincent better make up for what he did in book two. =)

I read the first installment, Secrets of a Summer Night in December and it was the first historical romance, or any romance novel which I had ever read. I never thought that I would enjoy this switch in genres; however, after reading the first of the Wallflowers series, I found myself really enjoying the company of the Wallflowers as well as the rest of the characters in the novel/series. I was really on the fence about continuing the series but I'm really glad that I stuck with it.

Having known what to expect from this genre and also Lisa Kleypas as an author, I felt like I had set the bar. And once someone has set the bar of expectations, you better make sure as an author, or as someone who delivers a certain product, that you are ready to make the grade. I enjoyed the first installment but this second part nearly drove me to madness, just as much as the characters within the novel.

It Happened One Autumn is based on the second eldest Wallflower: Lillian Bowman, the daughter of a wealthy American businessman hoping to expand his business in soap. The Bowmans, not of noble lineage had come to England from new York in hopes of finding suitable husbands for their two daughters: Lillian and Daisy. However, English and American cultures are quite different: in taste, in mannerisms and in propriety and because of this, Lillian has a difficult time adjusting and adhering to the certain level of expected etiquette, especially upon meeting the Earl of Westcliff, Marcus Marsden, who owns the estate which the family is visiting for a whole month.

For the entire month, Lillian and Westcliff find themselves at odds since Westcliff keeps his property and guests in check in a very formal and unrighteous manner and Lillian is not too fond of his snarky know-it-all-ness. Within the novel, Westcliff was the most eligible bachelor in England as he was in his thirties, unmarried and had the oldest lineage of noble blood in England. There were many expectations that were set upon his shoulders by his father, the late Earl of Westcliff and his strict and pompous mother, the Countess. Both of his sisters had gone to marry Americans, New Yorkers and his mother would do everything she could to make sure he married a proper English lady of nobility who knew her role in the English society. And of all the ladies that were interested in him, he of course had to fall in love with Lillian.

The entire novel held my interest equally from start to finish --and that's sometimes a challenge for authors! The book was filled with much wit and humourous rebellion as Marcus and Lillian squabbled, each of them fighting their true feelings for the other.

The greatest thing that I have come to appreciate with this Lisa Kleypas novel as well as her last one, is the element of surprise. Within the last 20-30 pages of the novel, I am quite prepared and content to be let go with ease as the story comes to a close, but Kleypas makes sure that her readers are being entertained and will keep you on edge until the very last page. In this case, Lillian is drugged and kidnapped... in the last few pages of the book! And in the first one, Anabelle's mother has a violent conniption fit and ends up stabbing a man! I love how there is always excitement and thrill lurking around a corner especially when it is least expected.

It Happened One Autumn has left me in complete awe. I don't believe that I could look at this genre (historical romance) with the same fru-la-la attitude and dismiss it as easily as I once did. I loved learning about the past English culture and I loved how this book gave me butterflies. I haven't had that feeling while reading a book in a long while. I also loved the balance of retaining the characters who were previously introduced in the first installment and keeping their roles significant without being overbearing on the new characters. I appreciated the depth of the culture, the characters, the narrative and the potential it has for the future novels of this series. I just really loved it all around. Congratulations Lisa Kleypas on writing a wonderful book. I'm hoping that your next one will be just as good, if not better!

It Happened One Autumn is receiving a 5 out of 5 for doing everything right.

I don't know which Wallflower book is my favorite- this one or Devil in Winter. This book has two very realistic characters and a romance that was gradual, exciting, and funny.

She is also fiercely loyal and honest. As the book went on, I got to see a different side of her- even though she rarely displayed affection and didn't seem to care what anybody thought, she cared, and she was not as jaded as she wanted everyone to believe. By the end of the book, I loved her.

Marcus: He's arrogant and very secure in the knowledge that his inheritance, his title and his shrewd business mind make him stand at the top of the social food chain. He's fastidious and has impeccable manners. Like Lillian, he's also quite mule-headed and believes he knows what is best for everyone- something he never hesitates to point out. However, we know from Again the Magic that he's open-minded, compassionate, and cares more about his family and loved ones than he does about anything else. He's good to the core, knows how to compromise, and none of the annoying things he does or says are meant with a mean spirit.

I love that neither Lillian nor Marcus were considered unbelievably good-looking, even though they were both fairly attractive. He's of average height, with a strong, virile body and sharp features. She's tall and thin, three inches shorter than him, not a great beauty like her friend Annabelle but with a wholesome, clean look. These little things make them seem more like people to me, and I love it. I love being able to relate to characters, and these two were flawed in the ways old married couples are flawed- their personalities, habits, negotiations, etc.

The Romance: I was very excited to read this, but I was worried that it would make the same mistake as other romance books where the hero and the heroine have hated each other since they met, and all of a sudden boom, we're in love, I can't keep my hands off of you, marry me.

This was not the case here, I was happy to find out. The dislike they have for each other morphs into attraction, then slowly and realistically into something more, and it was a pleasure to read- not rushed at all, and true to the characters as we know them. They fight many times, and some of the fights made me angry- as if I were the one fighting. That says a lot, don't you think?

Bottom Line: a great book. Romance fans, specially Lisa Kleypas fans, will surely love it. Sexy romance. Incredibly well-written characters. I'm so glad I read it, and I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.(less)

I LOVED THIS BOOK! Lord Westcliff is sooo yummy!

What a great read this was! Lillian is my favorite wallflower so far! I love her personality and her witty humor and sharp tongue. She doesn't beat around the bush and says it like it is. My kind of girl! I knew in the last book she would be paired with Lord Westcliff and I couldn't wait to see how that would unfold.

A couple of lines that I enjoyed were-

It's kind of obvious that Pride and Prejudice must have been a huge inspiration for this book. There's a feisty heroine with an embarrassingly pushy mother, a rich, prideful hero with an interfering titled female relative, a silly sister, a lothario looking to marry a woman with money, and it's all set in England in the 1800s! (Only Mr. Collins was notably absent.)

Anche questa volta, con il secondo romanzo delle Zitelle, abbiamo una storia bella, corposa, intensa e coerente, con una trama lineare ma mai banale; personaggi interessante e mai fastidiosi, un eroe kleypasiano da infarto ed un'eroina che non diventa mai antipatica; in più ci sono diversi personaggi secondari che arricchiscono la storia e creano tante piccole sottotrame che funzionano quasi da preludio per i prossimi romanzi.
In questo caso era il turno della seconda zitella: Lillian, la maggiore delle sorelle americane. Lillian è una specie di selvaggia senza buone maniere, ma spontanea e senza quella cocciutaggine fastidiosa tipica delle eroine 'indipendenti'. Per fortuna né Lillian, né la sorella sono incagliate nel loro atteggiamento liberale e un pò volgare che le avrebbe rese pesanti e difficili da digerire. Lillian si rende conto di non corrispondere agli standard della nobiltà inglese ma, anche se se ne infischia delle regole più banali e inutili, cerca di migliorarsi o quantomeno di limitarsi negli aspetti più importanti. Il suo carattere, però, le impone e quasi la obbliga a rispondere in modo decisamente poco 'nobile' alle provocazioni di Marcus, il classico nobile tutto d'un pezzo che non si capacita di come una ragazza così giovane possa essere così poco docile. In realtà Marcus è perversamente attratto dal modo di fare di Lillian, perché lui stesso vorrebbe essere libero dalle convenzioni ma non ha il coraggio di prendere posizione, dopo una vita di regole inculcate con la forza. Lillian fa del suo meglio per spiazzarlo, e Marcus ci casca sempre, finendo dalla padella alla brace e conseguentemente innamorato di Lillian. Non che Marcus sia un pesce lesso che si fa infinocchiare dalla nostra eroina: tutto il contrario! Marcus si fa fregare, si, ma fa in modo che nessuno se ne accorga, atteggiandosi sempre in modo tale da risultare 'in control' e soprattutto dominante in tutte le scene in cui compare e non. Un eroe alfa tipico della Kleypas, con i suoi momenti di dominatore sull'eroina, ma soprattutto con la sua trasformazione da eroe ad eroe innamorato scaglionata nella trama. Non abbiamo cambiamenti troppo improvvisi, né nei personaggi, né nella trama che ha un attimo di azione verso la fine. Insomma, è un romanzo della Kleypas quindi il voto è alto in modo quasi scontato. Non mi aspettavo di meno da lei, che ormai è il nome che sta al top delle autrici di romance. Speriamo che il prossimo romanzo non si faccia aspettare troppo, perché sono curiosa di vedere come la Kleypas abbia riscattato St Vincent. Attendo impaziente! (less)

I loved "It Happened One Autumn", especially when compared to the first book of the Wallflowers series. I was really intrigued by the characters of Lillian and Lord Westcliff in "Secrets of a Summer Night", so I was excited to find out that they get their own happy ending.

Lillian really sets herself apart from the archetype - she is American, proud, uninhibited, skilled at lock picking, and always up to no good. Her boorishness is so similar to Marcus' that their encounters are a delight to read...more
