The author of Get Shorty is in fine form with this offering. We’re in Detroit where the ageing mega-wealthy Mr Tony Paradise mixes with Victoria's Secret models and hit men. He’s a fan of University of Michigan football and he hires these models to play the role of "cheerleaders", bare-chested while he watches videos of Michigan games.
Two hit men show up, killing the old man and one of the women. The surviving ‘cheer ...more
Thriller - Chloe is an escort for Anthony Paradiso. One night she persuades roommate, Kelly, to join her. Chloe and Paradiso are shot dead by two thugs; the hit set up by Montez Taylor, who's angry at Paradiso for cutting him out of his will. Montez asks Kelly to impersonate Chloe and ...more
I give it 3 stars because while I enjoyed every moment of it, the plot isn't that interesting, there is no real mystery, you see the end coming a mile away, and there's nothing extraordinary about the characters. And yet, just through Leonard's craft, the book flies by and every CD track left me with a smile.
"She said to the old man, "Friends of yours?"
The old man squinted at them like he was thinking. Are they?
Carl pointed his Smith at the old man, shot him in the chest and shot him in the head.

The story started out well enough, but seemed to divert as it moved along. The romance that evolved seemed somewhat forced and really unneeded. I don't really know why it was there, it really drew me off the story, since I couldn't figure out why someone would risk their job doing ...more
...more

Like his previous noir novels, Mr. Paradise, dedicated to the Detroit Police Homicide Section, is "unputdownable" (Washington Post). A few loose ends, too much hipness--so what? We know whodunit early on, so Leonard devotes his energy to his quirky cast of lowlifes, replicating diverse American linguists including a McDonald's counter girl and a Chanel fashion model. Although the novel questions the many forms deception takes, it casts no moral shadow on the characters' questionable pursuits. Le...more
and often funny pulpy noir complete with a cop and dame that fall in love, an old butler that is more hip to everything than expected, and lots of juicy, sometimes dumb thieves and killers and other oddball crooks. also, Robert Forster narrates the audio book which is perfect.
