N or M? (Tommy and Tuppence Series #3)

The theme of the story was that even middle-aged detectives can be as sharp as young detectives. The two protagonists had a hard time finding work during the war because they were considered too old to be of any use. However, they were brought in ...more
WW II, Tommy & Tuppence are older & retired.... bored at home, wanting something to work on when a mystery from the home office turns up..... The man in charge wants to exclude Tuppence, so she "conveniently leaves" to visit a friend who has just rang-her-up. In her absence Tommy is asked to help decipher a cryptic message that a dying agent passed on to them...... "N or M... Sans Souci". Upon discussion it is surmised that there is a German agent; either the infamous N or M in San Souci ...more

The Tommy and Tuppence books are an intriguing series about a witty, charming, and confident couple, who become amateur sleuths. The series follows their career over several decades—from the youth, family life, and old age. Wonderful characters, clever dialogue, and intricate plots.
Tommy and Tuppence's antics are hilarious and absolutely delightful, and although their actual progress in catching N or M is more interesting and much stronger than the actual resolution, which I found was comparatively weak ...more

Once again, this is more of a suspense/spy thriller than a true mystery novel. I do like it perhaps a little ...more
In "N or M?", they are in charge of trying to find the German spies to prevent them from winning the war.
First off, I loved the fact that we got to see a little bit of their children in the novel. It was really cool to see what they'd had been doing in the time between "Partners in Crime" and "N or M?". Albert comes back to help as well! I loved the fact that Christie told us what was going on in their lives.
Second, I can't believe I did ...more
This is one of Agatha Christie's lesser known novels, as it features Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, rather than Poirot or Miss Marple. The first time we encounter these two bright young things, it was at the end of the First World War, and they become two young adventurers, seeking a master criminal known as Mr Bro ...more
Perhaps that's because Tommy and Tuppence are supposed to be more average than Marple and Poirot... Or maybe I expect too much from Aggie's detectives because the obvious things these two missed frustrated me sooo much that I found myse ...more

Book # 3 in the Tommy and Tuppence series has our couple bemoaning the fact that they’ve been basically put out to pasture. They recall how very successful they were in ferreting out spies during the Great War (i.e. WW I), and bemoan the fact that their government seems not to want to use them this time around. Ah, but there is a small job that Tommy might help with. There is no role for Tuppence, but you can’t expect her to take THAT lying down!
