Filled with comical illustrations that bring smiles and a story that teaches a valuable lesson there's a lot to like about LULU THE BIG LITTLE CHICK. Author/illustrator Bogan fills pages with bold whimsical illustrations that capture and hold young eyes, such as smiling hens happy in their hen house reading a book and knitting. More farm animals include docile, furry sheep in need of shearing, pudgy pink pigs, and an outsize cow.

Little Lulu, the smallest chick on the farm, has decided to go "far, far away" after her momma told her that she was too small to go very far out of her sight. So equipped with pink and purple scarf and purse, the determined Lulu leaves the chicken coop and passes: the pigs who splash her with mud, the sheep who squish her, the horse who almost steps on her, and the cow who nearly chews her up! Finally Lulu reaches a remote field somewhat disheveled and whispers, "Uh-oh, I think I'm far, far awa...more
Lulu is tired of hearing that she is too little, so decides to venture off to "far, far away" from her momma and the barnyard. Luckily two pig friends can usually be seen keeping an eye on Lulu as she runs into a sheep, a cow and a horse, all whom tell her she is too little to be out there alone!
I think that's my problem with the book right there - everyone telling Lulu she was too little to do this or do that or to be here or there. You cannot tell a child this over and over and expect them to...more

Lulu, the Big Little Chick is an endearing tale of the youthful exploration of independence and boundaries. Author and illustrator Paulette Bogan has delivered an artfully written and illustrated book. Her vibrant and detailed pictures jump from the pages to bring Lulu's adventures to life. Children will be entertained and delighted as they consider the importance of balancing their natural desire to pursue new experiences with the security and warmth of familiar surroundings. We agree that Lulu...more
I don't this is going to scare venturesome children any more than does, say Where the Wild Things Are. Even the scary thing at the end turns out to be a friend.
Besides, wandering away from your mom for a moment, thinking she is gone and then finding her is a classic small child experience. And THERE's Lulu's mom, right there!

Lulu the Big Little Chick is a good childrens book and is an easy read for young children. Children love books with farm animals in it and this is funny and would spark their interest. I would use this in a lesson of teaching about farm animals and being brave. The little chick says hes moving away and when he gets scared his momma chick saves him.
This book was not my favorite. I feel like this book teaches children unappreciation towards their parents. I know by the end of the book the chick was happy to see her mom, but there is not enough information at the beginning to say why the chick wants to go far far away, or why she is angry with her mother.
I did not like this story.
I did not like this story.
Lulu is a little chick that can't wait to be big and do big things. Most kids can't wait to grow up (little do they know). This book can be easily related to by young children.
The pictures will be entertaining for a group or a lap-read. The story is good and I think I could tell it in an entertaining way. The idea of wanting to be on one's own might resonate with the children. I definitely will do for a storytime, but I think I want to take a slight break from farm animals for a little longer.

Show the importance of family and that a young child needs their parents. I would read as an entertaining book for children.
